Implantation cutaneous tuberculosis after ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology.

A 45-year-old female presented with recurrent biliary pain, fever, anorexia and weight loss of 3 months duration. She was on highly active antiretroviral therapy for underlying human immunodeficiency virus infection for the past 5 months. Clinical examination revealed a 3-cm firm hepatomegaly. Investigations suggested mild anaemia, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate, deranged liver function tests, Mantoux test of 25 mm and CD4 count of 417 cells μl-1. Ultrasonography revealed mild central intrahepatic biliary radical dilatation with a dilated common bile duct and multiple periportal and p

Cutaneous Chromoblastomycosis Mimicking Tuberculosis Verrucosa Cutis: Look for Copper Pennies!

Chromoblastomycosis is a rare chronic fungal infection of skin and subcutaneous tissue. It is primarily a disease of tropical and subtropical regions and affects mainly the agricultural workers following trauma with vegetable matter. Cutaneous Chromoblastomycosis may clinically mimic cutaneous tuberculosis as both the condition usually presents with hyper pigmented verrucous lesion of skin. Here in we report a case of chronic cutaneous Chromoblastomycosis in a middle aged woman from north eastern part of India, who was initially misdiagnosed as Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis. In histopathology c

Childhood cutaneous tuberculosis: a 20-year retrospective study in Tunis.

Despite prevention programs, tuberculosis is still endemic in developing countries. We assessed the epidemiologic and clinical profiles of childhood cutaneous tuberculosis in our dermatology department from 1981 to 2000 and compared it to previous Tunisian reports and to the relevant literature. This is a retrospective study over a 20-year period (1981-2000) in a large teaching hospital of the capital. Patients included were below age 15 years. Diagnosis was based upon clinical examination, tuberculin reaction, histopathology and response to antitubercular therapy. There were 26 patients with

Miliary tuberculosis presenting with rigors and developing unusual cutaneous manifestations.

We report a case of miliary tuberculosis presenting with high fevers and rigors. While undergoing evaluation, the patient developed a diffuse, erythematous, maculopapular eruption coalescing to form erythematous plaques involving the abdomen, trunk, and proximal extremities. Biopsies of the lesions were smear- and culture-negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Rigors are an unusual presenting symptom of miliary tuberculosis and have only been reported three times in the (post-antibiotic era) literature. Chills have been reported to occur 28% of the time. This symptom can be confusing to the

Cutaneous tuberculosis in Hong Kong: a 10-year retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous tuberculosis was once a relatively common skin disease in Hong Kong. Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis was the commonest type. Because the last survey was carried out 25 years ago, it was thought necessary to find out the new incidence and pattern of this important disease in this locality. METHODS: A 10-year (1983-1992) retrospective survey on the epidemiologic and clinicobacteriologic aspects of cutaneous tuberculosis had been done in the public sector of Hong Kong. The records of the confirmed cases were retrieved for statistical analysis. RESULTS: A total of 176 cases ar

Simultaneous occurrence of multiple types of cutaneous tuberculosis (TVC and PNT) with internal organ tuberculosis (PTB).

A 40 years old male patient of poor socioeconomic condition presented with a well circumscribed rough surfaced and fissured, verrucous plaque on left axilla and a similar lesion on right foot- which were clinically diagnosed as tuberculosis verrucosa cutis. He also had necrotic papular eruption with varioliform scarring in some lesions on upper back clinically diagnosed as papulonecrotic tuberculid. He had fever and cough and mild weight loss suspicious of pulmonary tuberculosis. On investigation ESR was raised, mild anaemia was present, MT was strongly positive, chest x-ray was suggestive of

[Scrofuloderma-rare type of cutaneous tuberculosis in western industrialized countries].

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading infectious diseases worldwide and continues to pose a significant threat to global health. Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation, with lupus vulgaris being its most common variant in western industrialized nations. We report a case of tuberculosis cutis colliquativa, initially misdiagnosed as cutaneous sarcoidosis, in which complete clinical remission with scarring was achieved following several months of antitubercular chemotherapy.

Atypical facial plaque in diabetes unmasking cutaneous and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Cutaneous tuberculosis (TB) is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation that often presents atypically, particularly in patients with comorbid conditions like diabetes mellitus. Such presentations frequently lead to diagnostic delays and prolonged morbidity. We report the case of a woman in her late 40s with type 2 diabetes who presented with a chronic, progressively enlarging facial plaque and systemic constitutional symptoms. While radiological findings were highly suggestive of pulmonary TB, repeated sputum testing was inconclusive. Diagnostic confirmation was achieved through tissue-based molecu

The ulcer that would not heal: a rare cutaneous clue to miliary tuberculosis.

Cutaneous tuberculosis (TB) is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary TB, accounting for only 1-1.5% of cases. Among its various forms, cutaneous miliary TB is exceptionally uncommon and often presents with nonspecific clinical features. This makes early diagnosis challenging, especially in individuals who are immunocompromised. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with a 6-month history of multiple painful, nonhealing ulcers over the mons pubis, perivulvar area and left upper arm. Despite multiple courses of antibiotics, there was no improvement. Clinical examination reveal

Atypical presentations of cutaneous tuberculosis: A case series of six patients.

Cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB), a rare extrapulmonary manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, poses a diagnostic challenge owing to its diverse clinical presentations and paucibacillary nature. We present six atypical cases diagnosed between January 2022 and January 2025 at a tertiary care centre in North India. All patients were HIV-negative, with diagnoses confirmed by histopathology, cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test (CB-NAAT), culture, and imaging studies. Unusual manifestations included scrofuloderma of the hand overlying wrist joint TB, lupus vulgaris with acquired lymph

A clinicopathological pattern of cutaneous tuberculosis and HIV concurrence in western Rajasthan.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous tuberculosis (TB) forms a small subset of extrapulmonary TB and continues to be a significant diagnostic dilemma in routine practice. The present study is an attempt to find the incidence, clinical spectrum, and histopathological features of cutaneous TB in western Rajasthan. The relation of cutaneous TB with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was also assessed. METHOD: A total of 40 cases of newly diagnosed patients of cutaneous TB attending the dermatology outpatient department over a period of 1 year were included in the study. Clinicopathologic spectrum of cutaneous tuberculosis: a retrospective analysis of 165 Indians.

BACKGROUND: Although cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB) is well described, it is wise to periodically revisit the prevailing clinical and epidemiological features, of this somewhat uncommon entity in developed nations that is also usually neglected in national tuberculosis control programs in countries where tuberculosis is a major health problem, to maintain heightened awareness as the HIV pandemic runs its course. METHODS: Medical records of 165 cases of CTB, diagnosed from 2007 to 2010, were studied. The diagnosis in each was made on the basis of well-conceived and described criteria. All patien

Skin biopsy: a pillar in the identification of cutaneous Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

INTRODUCTION: The present study aimed to establish the frequency and clinical characteristics of cutaneous tuberculosis among Mexican adult patients. METHODOLOGY: Ninety-five patients with clinically compatible lesions to cutaneous tuberculosis participated in the study. All patients were HIV negative and none of them had previous anti-TB treatment. A skin biopsy was taken from every patient suspected of having tuberculosis, and a histopathologic examination was performed as follows: Ziehl-Neelsen staining; culturing of mycobacteria by Löwenstein-Jensen (L-J) medium; Mycobacteria Growth Indic

Cutaneous reactions to thiacetazone in Zambia--implications for tuberculosis treatment strategies.

Tuberculosis in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a growing threat to public health in Africa. Thiacetazone, one of the continent's most widely used antituberculous agents, may lead to severe cutaneous reactions in the HIV infected individual. We describe the impact of this reaction on the tuberculosis (TB) control programme of a district hospital in Zambia in 1990, and examine the cost implications of changing the standard treatment regime. We carried out a retrospective survey of records of all patients beginning TB treatment in 1990, together with HIV test results
