Arthropod-borne tularemia in Poland: a case report.

Tularemia is a rare zoonosis. The most common way is ingestion of contaminated meat or water, but the infection may also be acquired by insect bite. The clinical picture of the disease may be nonspecific. Due to polymorphisms of clinical picture, specific treatment is often delayed. In the last 50 years, in Poland, the most infections were acquired by handling hares. In our article, we present the case of a patient who was infected with Francisella tularensis due to arthropod bite. In the presented case, the diagnosis was difficult, because of the nonspecific clinical picture. Information of t

Generation and characterization of hybridoma antibodies for immunotherapy of tularemia.

Tularemia is caused by the Gram-negative facultative intracellular bacterium Francisella tularensis, which has been classified as a category A select agent-a likely bioweapon. The high virulence of F. tularensis and the threat of engineered antibiotic resistant variants warrant the development of new therapies to combat this disease. We have characterized 14 anti-Francisella hybridoma antibodies derived from mice infected with F. tularensis live vaccine strain (LVS) for potential use as immunotherapy of tularemia. All 14 antibodies cross-reacted with virulent F. tularensis type A clinical isol

Diagnostic approaches for oculoglandular tularemia: advantages of PCR.

AIM: The authors describe a diagnostic approach that proved to be particularly valuable in rare cases of ocular tularemia registered during the tularemia outbreak in 1997-2005 in Bulgaria. The authors describe the laboratory findings and diagnosis of four cases with an oculoglandular form of infection. METHODS: Several different specimens from each patient were analysed. Oculoglandular tularemia was diagnosed in four patients either by culture, immunofluorescent antibody analysis (IFA), serology or by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Three F tularensis strains

[Cervicofacial manifestations of tularemia. Apropos of a familial case].

Tularemia is a rare infectious disease, due to Francisella tularensis, a virulent bacterium transmitted by a carrier insect (essentially ticks) or by the meat of an infected animal (generally hares). We report 3 cases that occurred in the same family, showing the various symptoms of this disease. Revealing head and neck manifestations may mislead diagnosis.

[An epidemiological investigation of a tularemia outbreak in Smolensk Province].

The investigation of the epidemic outbreak of tularemia morbidity among the population of Vyaz'ma, was carried out. In this investigation the disease was shown to be transmitted by the water route due to contamination of water in the local water mains as the result of serious violations of the rules of using water supply systems. In the process of the investigation of this outbreak a natural focus of tularemia, not registered heretofore, was discovered. The work emphasizes the inadmissibility of deviations from the generally accepted tactics of tularemia control, consisting of a complex of pro

Microagglutination test for early and specific serodiagnosis of tularemia.

A microagglutination test with safranin-stained Francisella tularensis antigen was compared with a conventional tube agglutination test for the serodiagnosis of tularemia. The microagglutination test was performed in round-bottom microtiter plates by using 0.025 ml of the antisera and of the antigen. The antibody titers obtained by using the microagglutination test were 8 to 64 times higher than those seen with the tube agglutination. By the microagglutination test, the serum agglutinins were detected 3 days earlier in rabbits and 9 days earlier in humans than by the tube agglutination test. T

Tularemia: a 30-year experience with 88 cases.

Drawing upon our experience with 88 cases and a survey of the English literature, we reviewed the clinical, pathophysiological, and epidemiological aspects of tularemia. Tularemia can be thought of as two syndromes--ulceroglandular and typhoidal. This dichotomy simplifies earlier nomenclature and emphasizes the obscure typhoidal presentation. Clinical manifestations suggest that the two syndromes reflect differences in host response. In ulceroglandular tularemia the pathogen appears to be well contained by a vigorous inflammatory reaction. Pneumonia is less common and the patient's prognosis i

Rabbit hunter uveitis: case report of tularemia uveitis.

BACKGROUND: Literature reports on ophthalmological manifestations related to tularemia, a zoonose caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis, largely refer to Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome, which consists of the association of conjunctivitis with preauricular lymphadenitis. In this paper, we report a case of intraocular inflammation during tularemia infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old Caucasian man was diagnosed with unilateral uveitis. The uveitis was posterior, with a 2+ vitritis and a large yellowish lesion involving the macula with an overlying sub-retinal detachment, ext

Tularemia in children, Turkey, September 2009-November 2012.

Tularemia, a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis, is found throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere. It is not well known and is often misdiagnosed in children. Our aim with this study was to evaluate the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis for 100 children with tularemia in Turkey. The mean patient age was 10.1 ± 3.5 years (range 3-18 years), and most (63%) patients were male. The most common physical signs and laboratory findings were cervical lymphadenopathy (92%) and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (89%). Treatment response was higher and rate of relapse lower for c

Septic tularemia in 2 cottontop tamarins(Sanguinus oedipus).

Two captive cottontop tamarins (Sanguinus oedipus) died within 5 d of each other from systemic infection by Francisella tularensis (tularemia). One tamarin experienced mild clinical signs, including malaise, anorexia, and a mucoid nasal discharge for 4 d before death, whereas the other experienced a more rapid progression of disease that lasted less than 24 h. Differential diagnoses included gram-negative septicemia by an organism such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, or Yersinia; protozoal infection such as Toxoplasma gondii or an acute viral infection such as lymphocytic choriomeningitis. F.

Tularemia - a re-emerging disease with growing concern.

Tularemia caused by Gram-negative, coccobacillus bacterium, Francisella tularensis, is a highly infectious zoonotic disease. Human cases have been reported mainly from the United States, Nordic countries like Sweden and Finland, and some European and Asian countries. Naturally, the disease occurs in several vertebrates, particularly lagomorphs. Type A (subspecies tularensis) is more virulent and causes disease mainly in North America; type B (subspecies holarctica) is widespread, while subspecies mediasiatica is present in central Asia. F. tularensis is a possible bioweapon due to its lethalit

Tularemia Presenting Solely with Cervical Lymphadenopathy and Fever.

A 52-year-old German female presented with cervical lymphadenopathy and fever. Despite the initial symptom-presentation leading to the consideration of sarcoidosis, lymphoma, tuberculosis, and toxoplasmosis, an extensive serologic and histo- and molecular pathologic workup eventually indicated a likely diagnosis of tularemia. This case brings to light that tularemia is a diagnostic challenge and requires high reliance on the epidemiological context thorough patient history, and an extensive interdisciplinary diagnostic workup.

Francisella tularensis Subspecies holarctica and Tularemia in Germany.

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis a small, pleomorphic, facultative intracellular bacterium. In Europe, infections in animals and humans are caused mainly by Francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica. Humans can be exposed to the pathogen directly and indirectly through contact with sick animals, carcasses, mosquitoes and ticks, environmental sources such as contaminated water or soil, and food. So far, F. tularensis subsp. holarctica is the only Francisella species known to cause tularemia in Germany. On the basis of surveillance data, outbreak investigations
