Skeletal convergence in thunniform sharks, ichthyosaurs, whales, and tunas, and its possible ecological links through the marine ecosystem evolution.

Tunas, lamnid sharks, modern whales, and derived ichthyosaurs converged on the thunniform body plan, with a fusiform body, lunate caudal fin, compressed peduncle, and peduncle joint. This evolutionary convergence has been studied for a long time but little is known about whether all four clades share any skeletal characteristics. Comparisons of vertebral centrum dimensions along the body reveal that the four clades indeed share three skeletal characteristics (e.g., thick vertebral column for its length), while an additional feature is shared by cetaceans, lamnid sharks, and ichthyosaurs and tw

Analytical possibilities of Putrescine and Cadaverine enzymatic colorimetric determination in tuna based on diamine oxidase: A critical study of the use of ABTS.

The joint determination of putrescine (Put) and cadaverine (Cad) in the presence of other biogenic amines is studied using their enzymatic reaction with diamine oxidase (DAO). Three alternative methods are studied based on the intrinsic colorimetric properties of DAO or horseradish peroxidase (HRP), and the use of 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) colorimetric reagent, respectively. In this last case an in-depth study is carried out in order to explain and solve some drawbacks usually associated with the use of this reagent (especially interferences,

Dielectric barrier discharge pretreatment combined with magnetic field-assisted partial freezing: A novel strategy for enhancing the preservation quality of tuna.

Dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) demonstrates great potential in aquatic product preservation due to its strong sterilization capability. However, its application is greatly restricted by oxidative deterioration induced under high-voltage conditions. To address this challenge, this study combined DBD pretreatment with magnetic field (MF)-assisted partial freezing (PF) to improve the quality of tuna fillets. After 12 days of storage, the combined treatment (DBD-MF-PF) effectively inhibited color deterioration and microbial growth in the fillets. Compared with cold storage (CS) and single DBD

The Impact of Acute Ammonia Nitrogen Stress on Serum Biochemical Indicators and Spleen Gene Expression in Juvenile Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares).

The presence of ammonia nitrogen in water has a significant impact on the serum and spleen of fish, potentially leading to changes in substances such as proteins in the serum while also causing damage to the immune function of the spleen. To investigate the effects of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) stress on juvenile yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), this study established three NH3-N concentrations, 0, 5, and 10 mg/L, denoted as L0, L1, and L2, respectively. Serum and spleen samples were collected at 6, 24, and 36 h. The effects of different NH3-N concentrations and exposure times on the physiolo

A large outbreak of scombroid fish poisoning associated with eating yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) at a military mass catering in Dakar, Senegal.

On 26 November 2010, an outbreak of scombroid fish poisoning occurred in the French Armed Forces in Dakar, Senegal. This chemical intoxication, due to high histamine concentration in fish, is often mistaken for an allergic reaction. A case-control study was undertaken including the 71 cases and 78 randomly selected controls among lunch attendees. The usual symptoms for scombroid fish poisoning were observed in cases, i.e. flushing (85.9%), headache (83.1%), rapid/weak pulse (59.1%) and diarrhoea (47.9%). Symptoms occurred from within a few minutes to up to 3 h following the meal. Most patients

Comparative analysis of spleen structure, biochemical parameters, and transcriptome of adult and juvenile yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the South China Sea.

As one of the top predators in the ocean, yellowfin tuna possesses physiological characteristics that are highly adapted to its high-speed swimming habits, such as high cardiac output and efficient oxygen uptake and transportation systems, which enable it to swim rapidly various diverse layers of the water for feeding activities. These physiological characteristics are intricately associated with the efficient hematopoietic function of its spleen, which plays a crucial role in maintaining its long-distance migration and sustained physical activity in particular. However, there are fewer studie

Surfacing and diving behavior associated with thermal physiology in oceanic habitats of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the western north Pacific Ocean.

INTRODUCTION: Thermal physiology is a pivotal biotic factor for the ecophysiology of commercially valuable tuna, influencing not only horizontal but also vertical behaviors. We aimed to examine how the thermal physiology of skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis, SKJ) can explain the differences in their vertical behavior, focusing on surfacing and diving, among various thermal environments during their northward migration in the western North Pacific. METHODS: We analyzed archival tag data collected during 2012-2015, with individual time series (Fork length: 38-49 cm, N = 38) of swimming depth, w

Determination of trans- and cis-urocanic acid in relation to histamine, putrescine, and cadaverine contents in tuna (Auxis Thazard) at different storage temperatures.

Scombroid fish poisoning is usually associated with consumption of fish containing high levels of histamine. However, reports indicate that some cases have responded to antihistamine therapy while ingested histamine levels in these cases were low. Potentiation of histamine toxicity by some biogenic amines, and release of endogenous histamine by other compounds such as cis-urocanic acid (UCA) are some hypotheses that have been put forth to explain this anomaly. Very little is known about the effects of storage conditions on the production of both UCA isomers and biogenic amines in tuna. Thus, t
