Outbreaks following wild poliovirus importations --- Europe, Africa, and Asia, January 2009-September 2010.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) began in 1988. By 2006, indigenous transmission of wild poliovirus (WPV) had been interrupted in all but four countries (Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan). However, outbreaks following WPV importations into previously polio-free countries remain an ongoing risk until polio is eradicated. The GPEI Strategic Plan for 2010-2012 set the following two goals for outbreak control: 1) end outbreaks occurring in 2009 by mid-2010 and 2) end outbreaks occurring during 2010 to mid-2012 within 6 months of confirmation. This report describes new outbre

Global burden of cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases caused by specific etiologies from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of cirrhosis and chronic liver diseases has remained substantial and continues to evolve in response to shifting etiological patterns. While viral hepatitis and alcohol use have historically dominated, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is emerging as a major contributor worldwide. A comprehensive understanding of these trends across regions and sociodemographic levels is essential for targeted public health interventions. METHODS: We analyzed data on cirrhosis and chronic liver diseases from 1990 to 2021 using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (

Opioid substitution therapy in Tajikistan: Another perpetual pilot?

BACKGROUND: Opioid substitution therapy (OST) continues to face strong resistance in the former Soviet Central Asian republics. OST was discontinued by the Uzbek government in 2009. In Kyrgyzstan, with about 950 people currently receiving OST, the programme was about to be suspended in 2009. In Kazakhstan, a small pilot project serves 50 clients. Turkmenistan may introduce OST in 2010, while the Tajik Ministry of Health approved the introduction of an OST pilot in summer 2009. METHODS: This paper draws upon the analysis of interests of the OST-affected groups in Tajikistan as a case study to

First record of the human infection of Brucella melitensis in Kyrgyzstan: evidence from whole-genome sequencing-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis, a zoonosis mainly transmitted by consumption of unpasteurized dairy products as well as direct contact with infected animals, is endemic in Kyrgyzstan. However, Brucella species in humans have not been investigated and the origin of the disease remains poorly known in wide parts of Сentral Asia. Thus, molecular characterization of the circulating strains is a critical first step in understanding Brucella diversity in the country. METHODS: In this study, isolates were collected from patients with suspected brucellosis from different regions in Kyrgyzstan between 2019 a

Organ Transplantation in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the current landscape of deceased organ donation across the 5 Central Asian nations ( Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan ) and identified the multifactorial causes behind the regional "transplant gap." The study specifically focused on renal transplant programs, which constitute the vast majority of transplant activities and waiting lists in the region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis using a multidisciplinary approach, which included an audit of national legislative frameworks and official health mini

The integration of vision transformers and SAM for automated methane super-emitter detection using TROPOMI data.

Methane (CH4) significantly contributes to global warming, with a global warming potential approximately 84 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2) over 20 years. Numerous studies have shown that a small number of high-emitting point sources, known as super-emitters, account for a disproportionately large share of total anthropogenic CH4 emissions, underscoring the urgency of targeted detection strategies. Recently, a growing focus has been on using remote sensing technology for CH4 monitoring across various emission sources. As such, this study introduces an automated solution for identifying

Whole-genome sequencing for genetic diversity analysis of Iranian Brucella spp. isolated from humans and livestock.

Brucellosis is one of the most common zoonoses in the Middle East. It is causing economic losses to the livestock industry and has a great public health concern. Little is known about the genetic diversity and distribution of brucellae in Iran. Therefore, forty Brucella spp. strains (B. abortus and B. melitensis) isolated from animals and humans were analyzed by whole genome sequencing (WGS) technology using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) analysis and core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST). Brucella isolates were obtained from lymph nodes (cows and camels), milk (cows, camels an

Pattern of antibiotic therapy and clinical outcome in acute generalized peritonitis in semi-urban and rural Nigerians.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a significant public health challenge that remains a leading cause of premature death among women in Central Asia, serving as a marker of health inequality. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, healthcare strategies diverged, creating disparate outcomes for women across the region. This study evaluates the long-term trends in cervical cancer incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, distinguishing between the life-saving potential of organized screening and t

The salience of the body: transition in sexual self-identity for women living with multiple sclerosis.

UNLABELLED: Afghanistan faces a heavy and largely under‑recognized burden of hematological disorders, shaped by a uniquely complex interplay of high consanguinity, population‑specific genetic variants, widespread nutritional deficiencies, extreme environmental conditions, and decades of armed conflict. The national consanguinity rate (~ 46%) drives some of the world's highest prevalences of autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathies, particularly β‑thalassemia, with 1-1.5 million estimated carriers. β‑thalassemia carrier rates vary sharply by ethnicity, reaching 5-10% in Pashtun and Tajik groups,

Forecasting Asparaginase Need and Cost for Childhood Cancer Using ACCESS FORxECAST.

PURPOSE: Asparaginase (ASN) is a critical component of pediatric ALL protocols. Until recently, ASN was available in three formulations: native Escherichia coli, PEGylated E. coli (PEG), and Erwinase, with native E. coli typically more accessible in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Short shelf lives, intermittent availability, and concern for substandard formulations in LMICs have created a need for proactive ASN demand estimates. METHODS: We adapted FORxECAST, a pediatric cancer drug forecasting model, to focus on ASN for pediatric ALL. The model is adaptable to user data and defaul

Genetic variation and phylogeography of central Asian and other house mice, including a major new mitochondrial lineage in Yemen.

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and flanking tRNAs were sequenced from 76 mice collected at 60 localities extending from Egypt through Turkey, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nepal to eastern Asia. Segments of the Y chromosome and of a processed p53 pseudogene (Psip53) were amplified from many of these mice and from others collected elsewhere in Eurasia and North Africa. The 251 mtDNA types, including 54 new ones reported here, now identified from commensal house mice (Mus musculus group) by sequencing this segment can be organized into four major lineages-domesticus, musc
