Potentially Zoonotic Bacteria in Exotic Freshwater Turtles from the Canary Islands (Spain).

The pond slider (Trachemys scripta) is native to the southeastern United States but has been introduced all around the world, including to the Canary Islands (Spain), along with other less-common exotic freshwater turtles such as Graptemys pseudogeographica, Mauremys spp., and Pseudemys peninsularis. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of pathogenic bacteria in these animals and to evaluate the associated health risks for humans and local fauna. For this purpose, cloacal samples from 42 specimens collected on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) were analyz

Detection of Chlamydial DNA from Mediterranean Loggerhead Sea Turtles in Southern Italy.

Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular bacteria that include pathogens of human and veterinary importance. Several reptiles were reported to host chlamydial agents, but pathogenicity in these animals still needs clarification. Given that only one report of chlamydiosis was described in sea turtles, and that chlamydiae might also be detected in hosts without clinical signs, the current study examined asymptomatic Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtles for the presence of chlamydial DNA. Twenty loggerhead sea turtles, rehabilitated at the Marine Turtle Research Centre (Portici, Italy), were examine

Salmonella Infection in Turtles: A Risk for Staff Involved in Wildlife Management?

Monitoring of infections that may be transmitted to humans by animals in wildlife rescue centres is very important in order to protect the staff engaged in rehabilitation practices. Salmonella may be a natural inhabitant of the intestinal tract of turtles, rarely causing disease. This may represent a potential risk for humans, increasing the sanitary risk for operators in wildlife rescue centres. In this paper, the occurrence of non-typhoidal Salmonella among terrestrial turtles housed in a wildlife rescue centre in Southern Italy was investigated, in order to assess the serovars more frequent

Population pharmacokinetics of ceftazidime after a single intramuscular injection in wild turtles.

Ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin, is important for treating opportunistic bacterial infections in turtles. Antibacterial dosage regimens are not well established for wild turtles and are often extrapolated from other reptiles or mammals. This investigation used a population pharmacokinetic approach to study ceftazidime in wild turtles presented for rehabilitation. Ceftazidime was administered to 24 wild turtles presented to the Turtle Rescue Team at North Carolina State University. A sparse blood sampling protocol was used to collect samples from 0 to 120 hr with three samples per

Venous pressures and cardiac filling in turtles during apnoea and intermittent ventilation.

The amount of blood pumped by the heart (cardiac output) must be matched to the amount of blood returning to the heart (venous return), but the factors determining cardiac filling are sparsely understood in ectothermic vertebrates. Stroke volume is affected by heart rate along with central and peripheral venous pressures. In the present study, we investigated the heart rate dependency of cardiac filling in turtles, along with the changes in venous pressures that accompany ventilation. Experimental reductions in heart rate of anaesthetised turtles (Trachemys scripta) by the specific bradycardic

COCCIDIAL INFECTION OF THE ADRENAL GLANDS OF LEATHERBACK SEA TURTLES (DERMOCHELYS CORIACEA).

Histologic lesions incidental to the cause of death were observed in the adrenal glands of 17 subadult and adult leatherback sea turtles ( Dermochelys coriacea ) found dead or moribund on or near shore in North America. Round bodies, 250-300 μm in diameter composed of an outer capsule and large multinucleated cells surrounding a central mass of acellular material were distributed throughout the affected glands. Protozoal etiology was suspected based on some resemblance to coccidia; however, features diagnostic for coccidial infection were lacking in all but one case, which had a focal area of

Feeding status and basking requirements of freshwater turtles in an invasion context.

Thermoregulatory behavior and feeding status are strongly related in ectotherms. A trade-off between maintenance of energy balance and digestion efficiency has been recently proposed to affect thermoregulation in these animals. On the other hand, competition for basking sites has been described between Iberian turtles and the introduced red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta elegans). T. scripta negatively interferes with basking behavior of native turtles and benefits from a greater capacity to retain body heat, which may likely result in thermoregulatory advantages for the introduced sliders. Duodenal volvulus in free-living green turtles from coastal United Arab Emirates.

Post-mortem examinations performed during May and August of 1997 on three free-living green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in the United Arab Emirates revealed that all had stomachs full of fresh seagrass (approximately 99% of the total ingesta) and presented with a duodenal volvulus involving a length of approximately 100 cm. Duodeni appeared empty and necrotic with diffuse purple-black mucosa. No apparent signs of obstruction by foreign objects, acute endoparasitism, or other disorders were observed. In all cases, duodenal volvulus was diagnosed, the cause of which may have been dietary in origin.

Conjunctivitis, tracheitis, and pneumonia associated with herpesvirus infection in green sea turtles.

Fourteen juvenile (15- to 20-month-old) green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), representative of a group of sea turtles with clinical signs of respiratory tract disease, were euthanatized and submitted for necropsy. Macroscopically, lesions included periglottal necrosis, tracheitis with intraluminal caseous and laminated necrotic debris, and severe pneumonia. Several turtles had caseous conjunctival exudate covering the eyes. Microscopically, the turtles had fibrinonecrotic inflammation around the glottal opening, tracheitis, and severe bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia. In multifocal a

First Record of Triplet Embryos in Sea Turtles: Evidence of Natural Polyembryony in a Wild Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Nest From Guanahacabibes, Cuba.

Polyembryony is an exceptionally rare developmental phenomenon in reptiles and is typically documented as isolated cases of monozygotic twinning. Evidence of triplet embryos in chelonians is particularly scarce and has previously been reported only in managed or captive conditions. We report and describe an exceptional case of polyembryonic triplet embryos from a wild green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nest on the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, Cuba-representing one of only two confirmed chelonian triplet records and the first documented under natural incubation conditions in a sea turtle nest. The nest

Delayed gonadal development of estrogen-induced ZZ females in Chinese soft-shelled turtles†.

Exogenous estrogen induces sex reversal during embryonic development in various animal species including reptiles, yet the mechanisms underlying post-reversal gonadal development remain poorly understood. In this study, we generated ZZ female Chinese soft-shelled turtle Pelodiscus sinensis through 17β-estradiol treatment and investigated their reproductive traits and sex-specific gene expression at 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12 months post-hatching. Our results showed that by 12 months, ZZ females maintained ovarian structures and exhibited low expression levels of the male-specific genes SOX9 and DMRT1.

Isolation, identification and characterization of Aeromonas jandaei from diseased Chinese soft-shell turtles.

Aeromonas jandaei is a gram-negative bacterium commonly found in aquatic environments and can induce illnesses in amphibians, reptiles and aquatic animals. In this study, a strain of bacteria was isolated from the diseased Chinese soft-shell turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis), then named strain JDP-FX. This isolate was identified as A. jandaei after analysis of morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, as well as 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequences. Virulence genetic testing further detected temperature-sensitive protease (eprCAI), type III secretion system (TTSS) (ascv), nuclease (

Heart rate reduction during voluntary deep diving in free-ranging loggerhead sea turtles.

Air-breathing vertebrates exhibit cardiovascular responses to diving including heart rate reduction (diving bradycardia). Field studies on aquatic mammals and birds have shown that the intensity of bradycardia can vary depending on diving behaviour, such as the depth of dives and dive duration. However, in aquatic reptiles, the variation in heart rate during deep dives under natural conditions has not been fully investigated. In this study, we released five loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) outfitted with recorders into the sea and recorded their electrocardiogram, depth, water temperat

Regulation of the limb shape during the development of the Chinese softshell turtles.

Interdigital cell death is an important mechanism employed by amniotes to shape their limbs; inhibiting this process leads to the formation of webbed fingers, as seen in bats and ducks. The Chinese softshell turtle Pelodiscus sinensis (Reptilia: Testudines: Trionychidae) has a distinctive limb morphology: the anterior side of the limbs has partially webbed fingers with claw-like protrusions, while the posterior fingers are completely enclosed in webbings. Here, P. sinensis embryos were investigated to gain insights on the evolution of limb-shaping mechanisms in amniotes. We found cell death an

NEUROLOGIC AND COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FINDINGS IN SEA TURTLES WITH HISTORY OF TRAUMATIC INJURY.

Boat strikes have been widely documented as a major cause of anthropogenic trauma and mortality in sea turtles. Axial trauma in these species involves the head and/or carapace and may cause severe damage to the nervous and pulmonary systems. The aims of this study were to develop an updated protocol for neurologic examinations in sea turtles, to describe computed tomography (CT) findings in sea turtles with sustained trauma, and to associate CT findings with neurologic status in sea turtles with and without traumatic injury. Ten sea turtles were examined, six green (Chelonia mydas) and four lo

Gastrointestinal investigation of parasites and Enterobacteriaceae in loggerhead sea turtles from Italian coasts.

BACKGROUND: Caretta caretta is the most abundant sea turtle species in the Mediterranean, and studies on this species have vastly expanded during recent years, including those investigating gut bacterial and parasitic communities. Members of these communities have been reported with variable prevalence and pathogenicity, mainly depending on their host and environment (e.g. lifespan, distribution, habitat, diet, health status and stressors). Indeed, many species commonly inhabiting the sea turtle gastrointestinal tract exhibit an opportunistic behaviour. This study aimed to provide baseline dat

Prevalence of antibodies against Leptospira sp. in snakes, lizards and turtles in Slovenia.

BACKGROUND: Leptospiral infections in poikilothermic (cold blooded) animals have received very little attention and the literature concerning natural infections of these animals is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of leptospiral antibodies in reptiles, imported into Slovenia and intended to be pets in close contact with humans. A total of 297 reptiles (22 snakes, 210 lizards and 65 turtles) were tested for specific antibodies against serovars of Leptospira interrogans sensu stricto using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Live cultures of different serovars

Mercury concentrations in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) correlate with environmental and landscape characteristics.

Mercury (Hg) deposited onto the landscape can be transformed into methylmercury (MeHg), a neurotoxin that bioaccumulates up the aquatic food chain. Here, we report on Hg concentrations in snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina) across New York State, USA. The objectives of this study were to: (1) test which landscape, water, and biometric characteristics correlate with total Hg (THg) concentrations in snapping turtles; and (2) determine whether soft tissue THg concentrations correlate with scute (shell) concentrations. Forty-eight turtles were sampled non-lethally from ten lakes and wetlands ac
