Conjoined twinning in Sweden.

A small "epidemic" of conjoined twinning is reported occurring at the Skövde Central hospital in 1975-76. Three parts were observed, the annual birth number of 2300. During a ten-year period, 10 cases of conjoined twinning were reported to the Register of Congenital Malformations in Sweden, indicating a probable incidence of 1:75000 births. These 10 cases were distributed all over the country. Interviews with the three women who gave birth to the Skövde conjoined twins revealed no common factor which could be of aetiological significance.

Delivery room resuscitation of conjoined twins.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the golden hour and hospital outcomes of conjoined twins METHODS: Retrospective single center study of conjoined twins. Main outcome measures included delivery room characteristics. Secondary outcomes included survival and length of stay. RESULTS: From 2013-2025, there were 19 sets of conjoined twins (active resuscitation in 13; palliative in 6). Respiratory interventions in the delivery room were frequently needed including continuous positive airway pressure (75%), positive pressure ventilation (67%), and endotracheal intubation (25%). There were two sets with emergency

A Rare Case of Conjoined Twins.

Identical twins joined in utero are called conjoined twins. They are also called "Siamese twins." It is one of the uncommon variants of twin pregnancy. Our case report aims to demonstrate the significance of prenatal diagnosis and evaluation of conjoined twins due to the increased risk of perinatal morbidity and death. Early prenatal diagnosis and assessment of the degree of joining provide an opportunity for parents to decide whether to continue the pregnancy.

Cross-cultural representations of conjoined twins.

Conjoined twinning is a rare birth defect estimated to occur in about 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 births. The mechanism of conjoined twinning is not proven. Different forms of conjoined twinning are observed with the thoracopagus form being the most common. The rate of conjoined twinning is similar across all major populations. A dramatic malformation of this type would be an extraordinary occurrence leading people to reflect on the spiritual or supernatural nature of such an event. Therefore, it is not surprising that artifacts that seem to depict different forms of conjoined twins are seen across

Conjoined twins-thoraco-omphalopagus (type A).

A case of conjoined twins discovered by routine transabdominal ultrasound examination at 16 weeks gestation in a 19-year-old multigravid female. They were joined at the chest and the abdomen and had one functional heart. The pregnancy was terminated by caesarean section at 19 weeks gestation with approval from the family.

Anaesthesia of conjoined twins - case series.

As any complex surgical procedure, separation of conjoined twins requires complex anaesthesia management that is a prerequisite of performing the operation, while complex postoperative care is a decisive factor in the survival of the patients. The paper describes the anaesthetic management for surgical operations in ten sets of conjoined twins in the Children's Hospital of Cracow during 1977-2005. The anaesthetic technique and associated problems are summarized.

History of treatment of conjoined twins.

This paper presents a history of the treatment of conjoined twins. The first mention of this malformation comes from the Neolithic period. Conjoined twins were depicted in mythologies of ancient peoples. The present paper focuses on the theories of formation of Siamese twins and attempts at their separation. Moreover, the history of treatment of conjoined twins in Poland is described.

Successful separation of pygopagus conjoined twins.

Conjoined pygopagus twins are very rare. They represent about 17% of all conjoined twins and commonly share the gluteal region, terminal spine, and lower gastrointestinal, urological, and reproductive tracts. Meticulous preoperative investigations and planning as well as a multispecialty team approach contribute to the success of surgical separation. We report a case of successful surgical separation of pygopagus conjoined twins.

Conjoined twins--past, present, and future.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Conjoined twins are rare and complex anomalies of the newborn. They require a highly experienced team and a center equipped to deal with such challenging anatomy. METHOD: A review of 31 sets of conjoined twins was managed by one team over a 15-year period. The spectrum of the anomalies, management strategies, and outcomes will be analyzed with future recommendations. RESULTS: Ten sets of complete conjoined twins and two sets of parasitic conjoined twins were successfully separated. Tissue expanders and prosthetic meshes were not required. A separation of one set of cranio

First-trimester diagnosis of conjoined twins.

Conjoined twins are a rare and complex complication of monozygotic twinning, which is associated with high perinatal mortality. Early prenatal diagnosis of conjoined twins allows better counselling of the parents regarding the management options, including continuation of pregnancy with post-natal surgery, termination of pregnancy or selective fetocide in case of a triplet pregnancy. With the introduction of high-resolution and transvaginal ultrasound imaging, accurate prenatal diagnosis of conjoined twins is possible early in pregnancy. We have reviewed the medical literature on the early pre

Successful separation of thoracopagus conjoined twins.

The first successful separation of thoracopagus conjoined twins in Eastern Saudi Arabia with 2-year follow up is presented. Physical examination and radiographic studies revealed a conjunction that extended from midsternum to a common umbilicus. The shared internal organs included liver and pericardium. The separation was performed at the age of 4 months. The resulting chest wall defects in both twins were covered by dacron-reinforced silastic prosthesis. The abdominal wall defect was primarily closed in the "left twin," and covered with a dacron reinforced silastic sheet in the "right". Prima

Conjoined twins in the 16th century.

The major morphological types of conjoined twins had all been described by 1600, often in publications that included details of the time and place of birth, morphology, outcome, behaviour, and, on occasion, autopsy findings. These descriptions differ from modern reports in emphasizing the twins' supposed "meaning" rather than their cause. Understanding the symbolic aspects of these accounts is important for their interpretation. This article summarizes the records of 53 cases of conjoined twins born in 16th-century Europe and examines the cultural background of these accounts and the use of th

[Dicephalic conjoined twins-a case report].

Presentation of a case of dicephalic conjoined twins, rare malformation with an incidence of 1:50000. Before dissection, the specimen was investigated by CT, x-ray and ultrasound. Dissection was performed under Zeiss surgical microscope and the images were taken with a Sony video line. Specimens for histologic examination were collected. The parents refused genetic examination. The complex study of the specimen allowed us to make the following diagnosis: dicephalus dibrahii dipus conjoined twins. In the past 20 years no such case was reported in Romania. An etiological diagnosis is impossible.
