BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality in Rwandan women. There is a limited understanding of the barriers that women face to obtain cervical cancer screening in Rwanda. It is important to understand the barriers in order to implement effective screening programs. The goal of this study is to describe the barriers to cervical cancer screening among women in Rwanda and how they differ among women in rural and urban areas.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited women from June 1 to 9, 2022, at Muhima and Nyamata District Hospitals in Rwanda. Women were eligib

Urbanization in pre-modern populations may have had a variety of consequences related to population crowding. However, research on the effects of urbanization have provided inconsistent results regarding the biological impact of this transition on human populations. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that urbanization caused an increase in overall biological stress in a medieval (10th-13th centuries AD) Polish population. A human skeletal sample (n=164) was examined for the presence of porotic hyperostosis, cribra orbitalia, linear enamel hypoplasia, periosteal reaction, and s

BACKGROUND: Unintentional overdose deaths due to nonmedical use of prescription drugs disproportionately impact rural over urban settings in the United States. Sources of these prescriptions may play a factor.
OBJECTIVE: This study examines the relationships between rurality and source of prescription drugs used nonmedically.
METHODS: Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2008-2010 (n = 10 693), we examined bivariate and multivariate associations of socio-demographic and clinical correlates and source (physician or non-physician) of prescription drugs (opioid, sedative,

Urban populations present particular challenges for medical providers. Patients are extremely diverse, with varied socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Physicians caring for children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis must be prepared to interact effectively with many types of families who bring with them varied experiences and expectations. Pediatric rheumatologists should be familiar with patient characteristics that can influence disease outcomes. Access to care is affected by place of residence, referral delays, parental education, and the child’s insurance status. Patients of

The results of the study of quality of pulmonological medical care are presented. Overall, 366 out-patient case histories with the most commonly encountered diseases of respiratory system were submitted to expert assessment. The raw material was collected in 2005-2006 in 3 cities of the Republic of Dagestan. The expertise revealed that about a quarter of patients were examined timely and more than two third of them not timely. The discrepancy of diagnoses made by physicians and experts took place in 16.1% of cases. The expertise of treatment quality revealed that in 10.1% of cases the prescrib

BACKGROUND: National estimates of injury prevalence in the Emergency Department (ED) are based on medical record review and vary considerably. By using a more robust approach to surveillance, we (1) determine the prevalence of injury of any type in an urban ED population and (2) explore the association between violence-related injury and personal characteristics of injury victims.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed at an urban level I trauma center from June to August, 2005. We prospectively screened 4,246 consecutive ED patients for injury during a randomized schedule of shift

BACKGROUND: It had been believed that over 75% of cases of esophageal carcinoma were squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, recently, in Western countries, the incidence of SCC has decreased, while the rate of adenocarcinoma has increased dramatically, accounting for almost 50% of esophageal carcinomas. With this change, concern over Barrett's esophagus (BE) has increased. Traditionally, it was believed that BE affected Asians less frequently. However, accelerated westernization has changed the lifestyle of Asians dramatically, and this raises the question that the prevalence might be changed

The health of coyotes (Canis latrans) in urban areas has not been studied. Our objectives were to assess the health of coyotes in Tucson (Arizona, USA) by determining the prevalence of antibodies to selected pathogens, estimating survival rates, and identifying sources of mortality. We drew blood from 22 coyotes to evaluate the prevalence of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) antigens, and antibodies to canine distemper virus (CDV), infectious canine hepatitis (ICH), canine parvovirus (CPV), and seven serovars of Leptospira interrogans. We trapped and radiocollared 19 coyotes to determine surviva

We conducted a community-based cluster sample survey of rubella sero-epidemiology in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1994. Among 4666 individuals for whom complete data were available, rubella antibody prevalence was 91% (95% confidence interval: 90, 92). On multivariable analysis, seroprevalence was lower among individuals who were resident in Addis Ababa for 1 year or less. Approx. 50% seroprevalence was attained by age 4 years, and the estimated average age at infection was 5.2 years. The highest age-specific force of infection was estimated to occur in 5- to 9-year-olds. The early age at infectio

To determine markers of Taenia solium transmission and risk factors in an urban community, we studied 1,000 soldiers from a military camp in Mexico City and their relatives. Serum samples were used to detect antigens and antibodies and fecal specimens were examined for Taenia coproantigens and helminth eggs. Prevalences of 12.2% and 5.8% for cysticercosis were found among soldiers and their relatives, respectively. Taeniasis was found in 0.5% and none of the groups, respectively. Relatives of soldiers positive for cysticercosis and taeniasis markers ate more pork from street stores than restau

The short term vulnerability of sections of the population to the harmful effects of chemical pollutants in the urban atmosphere represents an important unresolved problem of public health. These groups include young children, the elderly, asthmatic patients, and patients with chronic bronchitis and cardio-respiratory insufficiency. A recently ratified French law on air and rational energy use is aimed at resolving this problem in the context of recognizing that everybody has a right to breathe air which is not damaging to their health. In order to achieve this objective and direct the measure

Evidence from large epidemiological studies has supported concern that being born light for gestational age (LiGA) may be detrimental. The incidence of LiGA babies is an important indicator of the health of women of reproductive age in deprived communities. In the assessment of LiGA in the Western Cape, centile charts constructed for populations in other parts of the world are generally used. These charts, however, may not be appropriate. Patients residing in the area served by the Tygerberg Hospital obstetric service, who booked early with singleton pregnancies, had their gestational age conf

As part of a systematic epidemiological survey of mental disorders in two Athenian boroughs, a probability sample of 251 elderly community residents was examined by a psychiatrist. For the assessment of their mental health, symptom screening scales were used (Langner and CES-D). Cognitive functioning was also evaluated. An overall psychological functioning profile was composed from previously derived mental health levels. Clinical diagnostic examination was based on a semi-structured schedule (PEF) supplemented by DSM-III criteria. A higher proportion of females than males were characterised a
