Inguinal Herniation of the Urinary Bladder Presenting as Recurrent Urinary Retention.

Herniation of the urinary bladder into the inguinal canal is an uncommon finding, observed in 0.5-4% of inguinal hernias (Curry (2000)). It is usually associated with other conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure such as bladder neck obstruction due to prostatic hypertrophy. Consequently, in men, it is usually associated with some degree of urinary retention. We present a 42-year-old man in whom herniation of the urinary bladder was the cause of urinary retention, and not vice versa. The patient was on tumor necrosis factor alpha antagonist (TNFA) (Etanercept) for severe Ankylosing s

A review of urinary bladder microbiome in patients with bladder cancer and its implications in bladder pathogenesis.

PURPOSE: The recent discovery of the urinary microbiome has led to an emerging field of investigation about the potential role of microorganisms in the pathogenesis of urinary bladder cancer. Few preliminary data have been reported so far implicating urobiome as causative and prognostic factor of bladder tumorigenesis. In the present study, a review of the current evidence is presented about microbiome composition among patients with bladder cancer and healthy individuals as well as possible implications of microbiome on urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. METHODS: A literature review was co

Ultrasound characteristics of feline urinary bladder transitional cell carcinoma are similar to canine urinary bladder transitional cell carcinoma.

Feline transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is a rare neoplasia of cats with an estimated prevalence of 0.18%. Cats with TCC share clinical signs with common pathologies like feline idiopathic cystitis or urinary tract infections. Nonspecific clinical signs include hematuria, pollakiuria, or stranguria. The literature lacks a feline-specific ultrasound description of TCC. The aim of this multicenter retrospective descriptive study was to report ultrasound findings of a collection of feline TCC and then assess if feline TCC and canine TCC have similar ultrasound appearances. It was hypothesized th

[A case of sigmoid colon cancer invading urinary bladder treated with preoperative mFOLFOX6 and urinary bladder conserving surgery].

A 69-year-old man visited our hospital because of melena and anemia. Colonoscopy revealed a type 3 tumor at sigmoid colon, and by abdominal CT, we detected a sigmoid colon cancer invading the urinary bladder with a single liver metastasis. The patient required sigmoidectomy with partial hepatectomy and total urinary bladder resection. Preoperative chemotherapy with mFOLFOX6 was initiated as a part of multidisciplinary therapy. After the 6th course was completed, CT revealed a reduction in the primary tumor's size and the disappearance of liver metastasis. After the 8th course was completed, we

Urothelial Papilloma of the Urinary Bladder in a Child.

Urothelial papilloma (UP) of the bladder is an extremely rare benign neoplasm in pediatrics, often manifested as gross hematuria. These lesions are typically small, well-circumscribed, located on the lateral or posterior bladder wall, frequently near the ureteral orifice. These small masses typically have a good prognosis with a favorable outcome.

Mullerianosis of the urinary bladder: a case report.

Mullerianosis is a rare, complex, benign tumor most commonly found in the bladder and often mistaken for a neoplastic lesion.  Herein, we report a case of mullerianosis in a 65-year-old woman who presented with an incidental 2 cm bladder mass found on cross-sectional imaging.  A mixed cystic and solid tumor was identified on cystoscopy and a transurethral resection of the suspected tumor was performed with histopathology confirming a final diagnosis of mullerianosis.  While an unusual diagnosis, mullerianosis of the urinary bladder needs to be correctly identified to provide appropriate treatm

Mullerianosis of urinary bladder: The great impersonator.

Müllerianosis of the urinary bladder is a rare entity with less than 30 cases reported. It encompasses a mixture of different types of Mullerian lesions like endometriosis, endocervicosis, and endosalpingiosis. It typically affects the women of reproductive age group. The symptoms vary from hematuria and dysuria, to pelvic pain, which may be associated with menstruation. It can mimic a malignant tumor clinically and radiologically; hence, it is important that a correct diagnosis is rendered in these cases to avoid unnecessary radical procedures. Herein we report a case of mullerianosis of the

Extranodal Richter's syndrome of the urinary bladder.

Lymphomas of the urinary bladder are rare and can be primary or secondary. The latter group includes Richter's Syndrome-which is a transformation of a chronic low-grade lymphoproliferative syndrome into a common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, most commonly localized in the lymph nodes. We report a case of an 84-year-old male, former-smoker with a history of low-grade chronic lymphocytic leukemia, treated with chemotherapy, with a recurrence of the disease to retroperitoneal and iliac lymph nodes, splenomegaly, and thickening of the bladder wall. The hematologist consulted us because of hematuri

Primary hydatid cyst of the urinary bladder.

A 35-year-old man presented with poorly localised lower abdominal pain for 3 months. Abdominal examination revealed lower abdominal tenderness, with normal other parts of examination. CT scan of the abdomen showed irregular multiloculated mass related to the upper part of the urinary bladder with mild rim enhancement in the postcontrast study with no areas of calcifications. During laparotomy, we found a mass attached to the superior part of the urinary bladder and arising from its wall. Complete excision was done without opening the cavity of the bladder. The mass was opened and was a hydatid

Primary Urinary Bladder Osteosarcoma in a Dog.

A 13-year-old, female Welsh corgi had a clinical history of haematuria and cystitis for 2-3 months. A 4 × 3 × 2 cm mass was excised surgically from the apex of the urinary bladder. A primary urinary bladder osteosarcoma was diagnosed histologically. Primary urinary bladder osteosarcoma is a rare tumour in man and animals. To the author's knowledge, there is no previously published report of a primary canine urinary bladder osteosarcoma.

Bladder cancer and urinary Schistosomiasis in Angola.

Schistosomiasis haematobia is among the most prevalent parasitosis in Angola. The pathology is characterized by serious and irreversible lesions in the urogenital tract induced by chronic infection with the parasite that can eventually lead to squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder. Considering the frequency and severe morbidity observed, even in younger ages, the purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence and morbidity of S. haematobium infection in Angola. A baseline survey was conducted between November 2007 and February 2008. A randomly sample of 300 inhabitants aged 15 to 75 years

Neurotrophins as regulators of urinary bladder function.

Increased voiding frequency and urgency are among the most prevalent storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), often diagnosed as part of overactive bladder syndrome (OAB). It has been suggested that these symptoms are caused by excessive sensory activation of the neural micturition circuit. It seems likely that sensory pathway remodelling is also responsible for pain perception upon bladder filling in patients with bladder pain syndrome (BPS). Neurotrophins-including nerve growth factor (NGF), brain-derived nerve factor (BDNF), neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) and neurotrophin-4 (NT-4)-represent mast

FOXP3 and survival in urinary bladder cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible impact of FOXP3 expression in T-cells, as well as in tumour cells, on long-term survival in patients with urinary bladder cancer (UBC) invading muscle. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, tumour specimens from 37 patients cystectomized for T1-T4 UBC during 1999-2002 at the Karolinska University Hospital were examined by immunohistochemistry for tumour expression and/or infiltration of immune cells expressing FOXP3 as well as CD3. The results obtained were correlated with clinicopathological parameters, where the primary and secondary outcomes

Granular cell tumor of the urinary bladder.

A 67-year-old Korean man presented with gross, painless hematuria that had lasted for the previous 2 months. Cystoscopy showed a semispherical tumor approximately 1 cm in diameter that was covered with normal bladder mucosa and extended from the bladder neck to the posterior wall of the bladder. The patient underwent transurethral resection of the tumor. Histological examination and immunohistochemical staining showed a granular cell tumor (GCT). There were no features suggesting a malignant phenotype. On follow-up, the patient has remained free of bladder recurrence. We herein report this cas

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

Small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder (SCCUB) is a rare and aggressive cancer of the bladder. SCCUB is part of neuroendocrine family of tumors that affect several organ systems including respiratory, gastrointestinal and male and female genitourinary tract. SCCUB affect males predominantly with common risk factors include smoking, bladder calculi, bladder manipulation, and chronic cystitis. Prognosis of SCCUB remains poor due to high metastatic potential and lack of symptoms in earlier stages of the disease. Pathogenesis of the disease is linked to loss of genetic material, hypermethylat

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the urinary bladder].

INTRODUCTION: A solitary fibrous tumor is a rare circumscribed neoplasm that was long known in the pleura and has now described in many organs and soft tissues. Prognosis is favorable after complete excision. CASE: We report a solitary tumor fibrous located in the bladder of a 38-year-old man with dysuria and a palpable abdominal mass. DISCUSSION: Solitary fibrous tumors are reported very rarely in the urinary bladder. They may mimic other nonepithelial tumors in this site. Diagnosis based only on pathological features is difficult. When complete excision is possible, prognosis is generally
