INTRODUCTION: The use of a temporaryor permanent catheter is very common in clinical practice. Between 15.0% and 25.0% of hospitalized patients have in-dwelling bladder catheters, the majority of which are short-term. Bladder catheter clamping before catheter removal was generally regarded as useful in the past. Today, its utility is questionable.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between bladder catheter clamping and spontaneous micturition or acute urinary retention (AUR) in postoperative patients with short-term indwelling bladder catheter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, comp

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: This study is aimed at comparing home with hospital removal of urinary catheters after surgical correction of pelvic floor disorders.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study at a single urogynecology practice (1 May 2020 to 30 November 2024). A total of 184 patients, age 33-86 years (mean 66.2) with a diagnosis of pelvic floor disorder underwent home removal (primary n = 31, secondary n = 34) or hospital removal (n = 153) of a urinary catheter after pelvic floor reconstructive surgery (IRB Pro2024-0473).
RESULTS: The incidence of urinary retention was signi…

BACKGROUND: Indwelling catheters are commonly used in non-intensive care internal medicine patients. They are associated with significant side effects.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the proportion of warranted indwelling catheters and factors associated with inappropriate use.
METHODS: We included consecutive patients hospitalized in three internal medicine departments from 2020 to 2021. We determined the proportion of urinary catheters inserted in the emergency department that were retained inappropriately for monitoring urine outputs. The area under the curve (AUC) was used to determine the abi…

BACKGROUND: People with chronic urinary retention typically require intermittent catheterization. This review evaluates the effectiveness, safety, patient preference, cost-effectiveness, and budget impact of different types of intermittent catheter (IC). Specifically, we compared prelubricated catheters (hydrophilic, gel reservoir) and noncoated catheters, as well as their single use versus reuse (multiple use).
METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search and included randomized controlled trials, cohort, and case-control studies that examined any type of single-use versus multiple-u

BACKGROUND: Long-term indwelling catheters are used commonly in people with lower urinary tract problems in home, hospital and specialised health-care settings. There are many potential complications and adverse effects associated with long-term catheter use. The effect of health-care policies related to the replacement of long-term urinary catheters on patient outcomes is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of different policies for replacing long-term indwelling urinary catheters in adults.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Specialised Trials Register, w…

BACKGROUND: The reduction of orbital blowout fracture primarily aims to normalize the extra-ocular movement by returning the herniated orbital soft tissue into the original position, and to prevent enophthalmos by normalizing the orbital cavity volume. We introduce a balloon catheter-assisted orbital floor reduction technique.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed for all patients with orbital floor fracture who underwent the technique described in the main body of this text. Medical records were reviewed for demographic data, clinical presentation and course, degree of enophthalmos,

Previous experimental investigations of the crystalline biofilms that colonize and block urinary catheters have focussed on their formation by pure cultures of Proteus mirabilis. In the urine of patients undergoing long-term catheterization, P. mirabilis is commonly found in mixed communities with other urinary tract pathogens. Little is known about the effect that the other species have on the rate at which P. mirabilis encrusts catheters. In the present study, a set of data on the nature of the bacterial communities on 106 catheter biofilms has been analysed and it was found that while speci…

The crystalline biofilms formed by Proteus mirabilis can seriously complicate the care of patients undergoing long-term bladder catheterization. The generation of alkaline urine by the bacterial urease causes calcium and magnesium phosphates to precipitate from urine and accumulate in the catheter biofilm, blocking the flow of urine from the bladder. The pH at which these salts crystallize from a urine sample, the nucleation pH (pH(n)), can be elevated by diluting the urine and by increasing its citrate content. The aim of this study was to examine whether manipulation of pH(n) in these ways m

Indwelling urinary catheter is a well-known risk for urinary tract infection (UTI). In order to minimize the risk for UTI urinary catheters should be used with prudence. On April 24th 2002 we performed a point-prevalence study on the use of indwelling urinary catheters in 31 acute hospitals and 766 long-term-care-facilities (LTCF) with 6,369 patients and 22,153 residents respectively. In the hospitals an average of 16.5% of the patients were treated with indwelling urinary catheters. The corresponding figure for LTCFs was 6.2%. Compared to 1994 there was an increase in the prevalence of urinar…

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the most common kind of nosocomial infection. Recent years have seen a significant increase in numbers of infections caused by yeasts of the genus Candida. The adherence of a microorganism to the host surface is a decisive factor in the success of colonization and the pathogenesis of infection. The objective of this work was to evaluate the adherence of species of the genus Candida to urinary catheters. In vitro adherence to the sections of latex and silicon catheters of Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis were studied. Adherence …

BACKGROUND: The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), a self-report personality test, is one of the frequently used measures to assess psychopathology in a wide variety of settings including in high stakes assessments, for example, in child custody disputes, employment settings and fitness for duty assessments. The PAI has never been normed on a Canadian population and the PAI users have simply assumed that the US norms also describe the Canadian population. Moreover, accumulated research demonstrates that the PAI's 35 years outdated and obsolete norms no longer describe neither university s

PURPOSE: Urologists frequently treat patients requiring long-term urinary drainage with a percutaneous nephrostomy tube or ureteral stent. W … IONS: Intraluminal pneumatic lithotripsy is a safe, easy and rapid technique for removing encrusted urinary catheters. It is unique in that the pneumatic lithotripsy probe functions in an aqueous and nonaqueous environment, and dislodges intraluminal calcifications. We recommend its use as first line treatment for removing encrusted urinary catheters.

A standard microwave oven has been used to sterilize catheters used for intermittent self-catheterization. Catheters were incubated for 60 minutes in a suspension of microorganisms isolated from the urine of patients with urinary tract infections. Each catheter was removed from the suspension, placed in a paper bag and microwaved for 0 to 30 minutes. A control catheter was not microwaved. We tested 42 strains of microorganisms to determine the minimum microwaving time needed to sterilize the catheters. Representative urinary isolates of Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella, Proteus, Enterobacter,

This article discusses some of the common complications that can occur with the use of indwelling urinary catheters, including: catheter-associated urinary tract infections; catheter blockages; encrustation; negative pressure; bladder spasm and trauma; and, in men, paraphimosis. PURPOSE: Inappropriate use of urinary and intravenous catheters is still frequent. The use of catheters is associated with some serious comp … for their urinary catheter in 20.9% and PIVC in 19.5%. Nevertheless, 65.3% reported symptoms due to urinary catheters and 37.5% for PIVCs. Interestingly, only 25.5% and 22.4% reported that they would ask their doctor if the catheter could be removed.
CONCLUSIONS: There is a lack of knowledge about the indication for having a urinary and peripheral intravenous cath …
