A multipronged approach for the detection of leptospirosis in captive sloth bears (Melursus ursinus) in Agra and Bannerghatta sloth bear rescue centers in India.

Leptospirosis is an exacerbating factor responsible for the drastic decline of sloth bear population in India. In this study, a multipronged approach based on antigen detection using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) employing G1/G2 and LigBF/LigBR primers, antibody detection using Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and recombinant LigBCon1-5 antigen based Latex Agglutination Test (rLigBCon1-5 LAT), serum biochemistry using hepatic (serum glutamate oxalo acetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and renal biomarkers (blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and Creatinine) an

Molecular detection of filarial nematode parasites in Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) from Iwate Prefecture, Japan.

This study aimed to detect filarial parasites in blood samples of Japanese black bears (Ursus thibetanus japonicus) collected from Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Positive amplicons were obtained from 26 out of 30 samples by nested PCR targeting 18S ribosomal RNA gene and first internal transcribed spacer regions. DNA sequences of Mansonella sp. close to M. ozzardi and Dirofilaria sp. were detected for eight and 11 positive amplicons, respectively. Co-infection was detected for the remaining seven amplicons. Dirofilaria sp. was identified as D. ursi by further genetic analysis of 5S ribosomal RNA gen

Clostridium sordellii in a brown bear (Ursus arctos) from Spain.

Clostridium sordellii is found in the environment and occasionally in animal (including human) intestines and may cause myonecrosis and large outbreaks of enterotoxemia. A few cases of fatal clostridial infection in bears (Ursus spp.) have been described worldwide but none attributed to C. sordellii. We describe a fatal case of septicemia caused by C. sordellii in an illegally trapped brown bear (Ursus arctos). At necropsy, acute gangrenous myositis was the primary lesion. Serohemorrhagic edema was observed in the abdominal cavity, thorax, pericardium, and skeletal muscle, mostly affecting fem

Trichinella nativa in Iceland: an example of Trichinella dispersion in a frigid zone.

In most Arctic and subarctic regions, Trichinella nativa is a common zoonotic pathogen circulating among wild carnivores. The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is one of the most important reservoirs for T. nativa in frigid zones. In Iceland, Trichinella infection has never been detected in the local wildlife, despite the presence of one of the host species, the arctic fox (Alopex lagopus). In 2008, one of two polar bears that had swum to Iceland's coast was found to have been infected with Trichinella sp. (8.5 larvae/g in the tongue, 6.8 larvae/g in the masseter and 4.4 larvae/g in the diaphragm);

Cretinism in a North American black bear (Ursus americanus).

Congenital hyperplastic goiter and cretinism were documented in a 16 month-old male North American black bear (Ursus americanus). The cub was captured at approximately 8 months of age and maintained for an additional 8 months in captivity. Clinical signs included growth retardation, clumsiness, and facial dysmorphism. Hypothyroidism was documented by determining serum triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels. Lysosomal storage disease was ruled out by measuring various lysosomal enzyme activities. Serologic, radiographic, computed tomographic, necropsy, and histopathologic findings were

[Experiences with ivermectin in exotic animals: scabies in camelids (Camelus bactrianus, Lama guanicoe, L. glama) and scabies and roundworms in bears (Thalarctos maritimus and Ursus arctos)].

For the control of scabies in tylopodes (L. bactrianus, L. guanicoe, L. glama) and brown bears 0.2 mg/kg body weight (1 ml/50 kg body weight) of Ivermectin subcutaneously injected proved to be remedy of choice. In Kodiak-bears the oral application of Ivomec-solution was effective against ascariasis, not, however, in polar bears. Sufficient effect was reached only once, whereas Equalan-paste proved to be highly effective. Despite of strong hygienic measures continous follow-up treatment for the prevention of re-invasion is indispensible.

Trichinella spiralis in the black bear (Ursus americanus) of Pennsylvania: distribution, prevalence and intensity of infection.

Samples of tongue or diaphragm from 2,056 black bears harvested in Pennsylvania during the 1981-1983 hunting seasons were examined for larvae of Trichinella spiralis by peptic digestion. Sixteen males and 21 females were infected. The overall prevalence of infection was 1.8%. Infected animals were distributed widely throughout the range of the bear in Pennsylvania. In samples from infected bears, the geometric mean density of muscle larvae was 7.8 per g of tissue (LPG). There were neither sex- nor age-related differences in prevalence or intensity of infection. Virtually all bears harvested in

Denning Phenology Mediates Sea-Ice Loss Impacts on Early Reproductive Success in Polar Bears.

Climate change is disrupting myriad biological processes, including the ability of species to synchronize life-history events with optimal environmental conditions, with potential fitness impacts. Changes in migratory and breeding phenology and their consequences on fitness have been well studied in birds and some mammals. By contrast, changes in the phenology of overwinter sheltering and their influence on fitness have rarely been investigated. Pregnant female polar bears (Ursus maritimus) spend the winter fasting in a maternity den where they give birth and nurse their cubs until emergence i

SEVERE BACTERIAL BRONCHOPNEUMONIA IN A GROUP OF ORPHANED AMERICAN BLACK BEARS (URSUS AMERICANUS) IN EASTERN TENNESSEE, USA.

This case series describes six cases of severe bacterial bronchopneumonia in a mixed-sex group of 9-mon-old American black bear (Ursus americanus) cubs residing in a rehabilitation center in eastern Tennessee. Several months after initial admittance to the rehabilitation center, six cubs were presented to a university teaching hospital with dyspnea, hyporexia, and lethargy of varying degrees of severity. Postmortem evaluation of an individual that died after a diagnostic evaluation revealed severe mucosuppurative bronchopneumonia. Culture of fresh lung tissue yielded a pure culture of Streptoc

Ultrasonographic and Endoscopic Findings of Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma With Duodenal Invasion in a Brown Bear (Ursus arctos).

This report describes a 25-year-old, intact male brown bear (Ursus arctos) presenting with weight loss, diarrhea, melena, apathy, and a 12% hematocrit. Ultrasound showed proximal duodenal wall thickening with submucosal cysts and a large, heterogeneous, highly vascularized mass in the descending duodenum, containing small gas pockets and compressing the lumen. The pancreas was visualized at the beginning of the descending duodenum, with normal echogenicity and slightly heterogeneous echotexture, containing a large cyst. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed bleeding and a partially obstruc

Broad host specificity of Trichinella chanchalensis and minimal interspecific competition with T. nativa and T6 in naturally co-infected hosts.

Trichinella are muscle-dwelling parasitic nematodes that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. Trichinella chanchalensis is a newly recognized species that has been reported in wolverine (Gulo gulo). To investigate the host range of T. chanchalensis we examined the tongue and/or diaphragm from 125 wolverines, 34 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 23 Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis), 13 grey wolves (Canis lupus), 10 coyotes (Canis latrans), six black bears (Ursus americanus), one grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), and one polar bear (Ursus maritimus), from Yukon, Canada. Ursicoptes americanus infestation of American black bears (Ursus americanus) in Virginia, USA.

American black bears (Ursus americanus) admitted to a Virginia rehabilitation center were tested for Ursicoptes americanus. From 2014 to 2023, 23 of 150 (15.3 %) bears were positive with higher prevalence in juveniles and females. Several bears had localized or multifocal, moderate lesions or alopecia consistent with mange; however, some had no clinical signs associated with mange. Several bears were co-infested with Sarcoptes scabiei. These data show that infestation with U. americanus mites is common and does not always cause disease. However, there is a need to understand potential mange-ca

Microbial species from multiple maternal body sites shape the developing giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) cub gut microbiome.

The gut microbiome of the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) plays a vital role in nutrient acquisition from its specialized bamboo diet. Giant panda cubs harbour significantly different gut microbiota during their growth and development when feeding on milk before switching to bamboo. The fetal gut is sterile, and following birth, mother-to-infant microbial transmission has been implicated as a seeding source for the infant gut microbiota. Details of this transmission in giant pandas remain unclear. In this study, faecal samples were collected from seven panda mother-cub pairs when the cubs

Load analysis of hands and feet while using different types of crutches with various leg's weight bearing.

The study aimed to define the load on hands using various commonly used types of crutches while walking with a full load on both legs (FL), with 20 kg partial load (PL), or with the left leg wholly unloaded (UL). Twenty-six healthy subjects used crutches with ergonomic handles, with anatomic handles (wider and softer bearing surface), and arthritis crutches (horizontal supporting area for the forearm). Sensor mats between hand and handles continuously measured the load transmitted, while sensor soles in the shoes recorded the ground reaction forces simultaneously. The load on the palm and sepa

Baylisascaris transfuga (Ascaridoidea, Nematoda) from European brown bear (Ursus arctos) causing larva migrans in laboratory mice with clinical manifestation.

Due to the recent recovery of brown bear populations in Central Europe, information about their ascarid parasite, Baylisascaris transfuga is necessary as the parasite represents a part of natural ecological networks. B. transfuga can lead to larva migrans syndrome in accidental hosts, but its zoonotic potential has not been confirmed. The resent study compares development of larva migrans in infected mice inoculated with two infectious doses (ID 200 and ID 2000) of B. transfuga embryonated eggs, and the clinical manifestation to evaluate the pathogenicity of the larvae. Histopathology revealed

Genetic architecture and evolution of color variation in American black bears.

Color variation is a frequent evolutionary substrate for camouflage in small mammals, but the underlying genetics and evolutionary forces that drive color variation in natural populations of large mammals are mostly unexplained. The American black bear, Ursus americanus (U. americanus), exhibits a range of colors including the cinnamon morph, which has a similar color to the brown bear, U. arctos, and is found at high frequency in the American southwest. Reflectance and chemical melanin measurements showed little distinction between U. arctos and cinnamon U. americanus individuals. We used a g

Stereotypic behaviour predicts reproductive performance and litter sex ratio in giant pandas.

Breeding and welfare problems confront many conservation breeding programs. Stereotypies-repetitive, unvarying, functionless behaviours -are common abnormal behaviours that often arise in suboptimal conditions. While the role of stereotypies in welfare assessment is well studied, few investigations address the relationship between stereotypic behaviour and reproduction. We examined the correlation between stereotypic behaviour and reproductive performance in 101 giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). High stereotyping males copulated more and produced more cubs, suggesting that highly sexually
