The eye has a special relationship with the immune system; normally, there appears to be intraocular suppression of inflammatory responses. Studies of the immunological principles of intraocular inflammation (uveitis) are mostly done in animal models. Although very complicated, uveitis appears in any case to be T-cell mediated. Uveitis is classified according to anatomical location as anterior, intermediate, posterior and pan-uveitis. Other immunological disorders are the sicca syndrome, keratitis and scleritis. All these disorders may or may not be associated with systemic autoimmune diseases

BACKGROUND: Vitreoretinal lymphoma (VRL) is a rare intraocular malignancy that poses a diagnostic challenge due to the non-specific clinical presentation that resembles uveitis. The use of spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has emerged as a valuable imaging tool to characterize VRL. Therefore, we sought to determine the specific OCT features in VRL compared to the uveitides.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients who were seen at Mayo Clinic from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2022. The medical records and SD-OCT images at time of initial presentation were re

Uveitis is a collective term for a variety of different intraocular inflammations. The underlying etiologies vary greatly depending on the uveitis subtype, and in particular the anatomical focus. The most common forms of anterior uveitis are acute fibrinous unilateral uveitis, often associated with the HLA-B27 haplotype, and granulomatous inflammation, typically associated with sarcoidosis or herpes infections. Intermediate uveitis is usually idiopathic in nature but can also be associated with multiple sclerosis or sarcoidosis, while vitreoretinal lymphoma must also be considered as a masquer

BACKGROUND: Uveitis is a major cause of visual impairment throughout the world. Analysis of cytokine profiles in aqueous humor specimens may provide insight into the physiopathological processes that underly retinal damage in this context.
METHODS: Using a multiplex assay, we determined the concentrations of 17 cytokines and chemokines in aqueous humor specimens obtained from patients with ocular toxoplasmosis or viral uveitis and compared these concentrations with those in specimens obtained from patients with noninfectious intermediate uveitis or cataract.
RESULTS: Five mediators (interleu

We compared uveitis patients who attended a general eye clinic (n = 183) with those who attended the ophthalmology department of a university hospital (n = 550) to examine factors that affect the clinical statistics of uveitis outpatients. We observed that diabetic iritis and herpetic iritis were significantly more frequent in the clinic whereas Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease and Behcet's disease were significantly more common in the university hospital. Among the so-called three leading uveitis, Behcet's disease and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease were relatively rare in the general clinic; they m
