Behçet's disease in a vaginal smear. Report of a case with cytologic features and their distinction from squamous cell carcinoma.

A 52-year-old woman who had undergone a hysterectomy 15 years previously for benign disease presented with ulcerative lesions on the perigenital skin and external genitalia. A Papanicolaou smear of the vagina, unaccompanied by any history, showed a heavy, purulent exudate and many isolated pleomorphic and keratinizing squamous cells. The findings were suggestive of squamous cell carcinoma. Subsequently obtained clinical data revealed a long-standing history of ulcerating oral and genital lesions of Behçet's disease. Biopsy confirmed the nonneoplastic ulcerative nature of the process. Given thi

Experimental congenital toxoplasmosis. III. Toxoplasmosis in the offspring of mice infected by the vaginal route. Incidence and manifestations of the disease.

A study has been made of congenital toxoplasmosis in the offspring of mice infected with Toxoplasma by the vaginal route during pregnancy. Some of the young mice were retarded in postnatal development, and some became ill or died in the 2nd to 4th weeks of life while the majority remained symptom-free in spite of the presence of toxoplasmic lesions of varying degrees of severity. Congenital toxoplasmosis developed only in offspring whose mothers had been infected on the 7th to 9th day of pregnancy. Infection of the offspring without active toxoplasmosis in the mother was not observed. The high

Characterization of the Clinical Manifestations of Bacterial Vaginosis at a Tertiary Care Infectious Diseases Vaginitis Clinic in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is common and characterized by heterogeneous presentations. We aimed to determine BV subtype prevalence among women attending a United States infectious diseases vaginitis specialty clinic at initial and follow-up visits and identify factors associated with BV subtypes. METHODS: Medical records from adult patients were reviewed, including demographics, visit frequency, STI history, symptoms, and diagnoses. Chi-square, Fisher exact, and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests compared women with and without BV. Modified Poisson models with generalized estimating equations

Amniotic fluid collected from vaginal birth as a source of stem cells for clinical applications and disease modeling.

IMPORTANCE: Amniotic fluid is a promising source of autologous cells for disease modeling, drug screening, and regenerative medicine applications. However, current methods of collecting amniotic fluid are invasive, and samples are limited to pregnancies that require amniocentesis or cesarean section. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether amniotic fluid cells could be isolated and cultured from amniotic fluid collected during vaginal deliveries. INTERVENTION: Amniotic fluid samples were obtained during delivery of 4 neonates, 3 of which had been prenatally diagnosed wi

Association between pelvic inflammatory disease and risk of ovarian, uterine, cervical, and vaginal cancers-a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The present meta-analysis aims to investigate a potential link between pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and an increased risk of genitourinary cancers (ovarian, cervical, uterus, and vagina cancers). While previous research has hinted at a possible link, this meta-analysis seeks to delve deeper into the available evidence. Understanding this association is crucial for preventive strategies and improving clinical management practices. METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across various databases, covering studies published between 2016 and 2024. We

Vaginal microbiota in pregnant women with inflammatory rheumatic and inflammatory bowel disease: A matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic diseases and vaginal infections both increase the risk of preterm birth. It is unclear whether pregnant women with rheumatic disease are more likely to experience vaginal infections, which might potentially accumulate modifiable risk factors. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we sought to evaluate the vaginal microbiota of pregnant women with inflammatory rheumatic and inflammatory bowel disease. METHODS: A total of 539 asymptomatic women with singleton pregnancy were routinely screened for an abnormal vaginal microbiota between 10 + 0 and 16 + 0 gestational weeks. Vaginal smea

Bacterial Vaginosis and Behavioral Factors Associated With Incident Pelvic Inflammatory Disease in the Longitudinal Study of Vaginal Flora.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) leads to long-term reproductive consequences for cisgender women. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and behavioral factors may play a role in PID pathogenesis. We assessed associations between BV, behavioral factors, and incident PID. METHODS: We analyzed participants (N = 2956) enrolled in the National Institutes of Health Longitudinal Study of Vaginal Flora, a cohort of nonpregnant cisgender women followed quarterly for 12 months. PID was defined by at least 1 of the following: cervical motion tenderness, uterine tenderness, or adnexal tenderness (160 ca

Novel bacterial vaginosis-associated organisms mediate the relationship between vaginal douching and pelvic inflammatory disease.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether the relationship between a history of vaginal douching and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is mediated by endometrial infection with one or more novel bacterial vaginosis (BV)-associated organisms among Atopobium vaginae, the BV-associated bacterium 1 (BVAB1), neathia (Leptotrichia) amnionii and Sneathia sanguinegens. METHODS: We first conducted log-binomial regression analyses to identify risk factors for endometrial infection in 535 adolescent and adult women with clinically suspected PID in the PID Evaluation and Clinical Health (PEACH) study. Diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): intra-operative findings and comparison of vaginal and intra-abdominal cultures.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is frequent in adolescents and younger women. Diagnosis is usually based on the clinical findings, and the threshold for empiric antibiotic therapy should be low. However, at least in cases of resistance toward therapy or deterioration of symptoms, laparoscopic evaluation can be helpful. METHODS: We searched the hospital charts for in-house patients who were treated for PID or tubo-ovarian abscess between 2007 and 2010. In cases with both vaginal and intra-abdominal bacterial cultures, results of those were compared. RESULTS: 73 patients with s

Drug treatment of common STDs: Part II. Vaginal infections, pelvic inflammatory disease and genital warts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidelines for the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in 1998. Several treatment advances have been made since the previous guidelines were published. Part II of this two-part series on STDs describes recommendations for the treatment of diseases characterized by vaginal discharge, pelvic inflammatory disease, epididymitis, human papillomavirus infection, proctitis, proctocolitis, enteritis and ectoparasitic diseases. Single-dose therapies are recommended for the treatment of several of these diseases. A single 1-

Assessment of office-based care of sexually transmitted diseases and vaginitis and antibiotic decision-making by obstetrician-gynecologists.

OBJECTIVE: Survey office-based obstetric-gynecologic practitioners regarding their knowledge of infectious disease care and antibiotic use. METHODS: A survey questionnaire of multiple-choice questions was mailed to Fellows of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists about clinical entities for which recommendations have undergone recent changes or about which there was a lack of consensus in a prior similar survey (Gibbs RS, McGregor JA, Mead PB, et al.: Obstet Gynecol 83:631-636, 1994). RESULTS: Respondents indicated that oral metronidazole was their most frequent choice to t

Laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy for non-malignant disease of the uterus. Report on a personal series of 126 cases.

OBJECTIVE: A report is given of a series of 126 laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomies (LAVH) for benign lesions, carried out between September 1990 and December 1995. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The mean age of the patients was 50.3 years, and the main indications for hysterectomy were metrorrhagia (88). The main reasons why LAVH was chosen from among other hysterectomy techniques were a large uterus (55), associated ovarian surgery (45), and a difficult vaginal approach (35). The surgical technique always began with a laparoscopic stage followed by a vaginal stage. The laparoscopic stag

Post-surgical pyoderma gangrenosum of the vaginal vault associated with ulcerative colitis and Behçet's disease; a case report.

A case is described in which a patient with ulcerative colitis developed chronic vaginal ulceration around the incision lines after cone biopsy. The ulcers persisted at the vaginal vault after abdominal hysterectomy and removal of a cuff of vagina. Non-specific histological features compatible with pyoderma gangrenosum were found on biopsy. The auto-immune nature of this chronic ulcer is further supported by its rapid response to steroid therapy and the subsequent development of Behçet's syndrome.

The role of vaginal secretory immunoglobulin A, Gardnerella vaginalis, anaerobes, and Chlamydia trachomatis in postabortal pelvic inflammatory disease.

In a prospective study of 129 women undergoing induced first-trimester abortion, 14 (10.9%) contracted postabortal pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Samples of vaginal secretion for quantitation of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) as well as isolates from cervix/urethra for the culture of anaerobes and aerobes, including Bacteroides fragilis et melaninogenicus and Gardnerella vaginalis, were obtained at the preoperative visit. Two blood samples from each woman with postabortal PID were analysed for antibodies against G. vaginalis. Twenty-five per cent of women with a history of PID developed

Investigating the correlation between oncogenic HPV, sexually transmitted disease, and vaginal microbiota in patients with normal Pap smear.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the correlation between high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV), sexually transmitted disease (STD), and vaginal microbiota in patients with a normal Pap smear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For women who were referred for their routine cervical cancer screening, in addition to co-testing, some samples were taken from the vaginal and cervical environment to check the presence of the most common STD pathogens. The diagnosis of the organisms was done by means of PCR and microbial cultures. RESULTS: HR HPV was detected in 67 women, and STD was posit

Livestock abortion surveillance in Tanzania reveals disease priorities and importance of timely collection of vaginal swab samples for attribution.

Lack of data on the aetiology of livestock diseases constrains effective interventions to improve livelihoods, food security and public health. Livestock abortion is an important disease syndrome affecting productivity and public health. Several pathogens are associated with livestock abortions but across Africa surveillance data rarely include information from abortions, little is known about aetiology and impacts, and data are not available to inform interventions. This paper describes outcomes from a surveillance platform established in Tanzania spanning pastoral, agropastoral and smallhold

Establishment of pelvic inflammatory disease model induced by vaginal injection of Ureaplasma urealyticum liquids combined with fatigue and hunger.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an inflammation of the upper genital tract. PID is the leading cause of some severe sequelae in the absence of timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment. An appropriate animal model is needed to explore the underlying mechanism of PID sequelae. This study introduced an animal model of PID by vaginal injection of liquid Ureaplasma urealyticum combined with fatigue and hunger (UVF). This study was designed to test the feasibility of a rat model. A rat model was established using UVF irradiation. Levels of some inflammatory cytokines in the serum and the hom
