BACKGROUND: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a defective RNA virus requiring the presence of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) for the completion of its life cycle. Active replication of HDV can lead to severe hepatitis, and although present worldwide has an irregular geographical distribution, especially in the Asian Pacific region.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and molecular epidemiology of HDV isolates in Oceania following the 1998 evaluation of the hepatitis B vaccine program.
STUDY DESIGN: Sera collected from 184 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive P

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in Australia raises questions about transmission potential across neighbouring Pacific Island countries and territories (PICs), where surveillance infrastructure and diagnostic capacity are limited.
METHODOLOGY: We conducted a qualitative risk assessment of 22 PICs structured around three components: (1) 'release assessment', evaluating JEV introduction pathways based on geographic proximity, migratory waterbird flyway connectivity, and windborne mosquito dispersal potential; (2) 'exposure assessment', evaluating ecological transm

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) represent a global primary cause of disability, affecting over 1.69 billion individuals and accounting for over 160 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2021. Conventional metrics assess care quality inadequately, necessitating a multidimensional evaluation framework. Thus, this study introduces a novel metric - the Quality of Care Index (QCI) - to comprehensively evaluate the MSD landscape.
OBJECTIVE: To develop a novel QCI for MSDs and evaluate global trends, disparities, and drivers from 1990 to 2021.
METHODS: Using Global Burden o

BACKGROUND: Although cutaneous ulcers (CU) in the tropics is frequently attributed to Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue, the causative agent of yaws, Haemophilus ducreyi has emerged as a major cause of CU in yaws-endemic regions of the South Pacific islands and Africa. H. ducreyi is generally susceptible to macrolides, but CU strains persist after mass drug administration of azithromycin for yaws or trachoma. H. ducreyi also causes genital ulcers (GU) and was thought to be exclusively transmitted by microabrasions that occur during sex. In human volunteers, the GU strain 35000HP does not

Assessing how forests respond to, and recuperate from, cyclones is critical to understanding forest dynamics and planning for the impacts of climate change. Projected increases in the intensity and frequency of severe cyclones can threaten both forests and forest-dependent communities. The Pacific Islands are subject to frequent low-intensity cyclones, but there is little information on the effects of high intensity cyclones, or on how forest stewardship practices may affect outcomes. We assess the resistance and resilience of forests in three community-stewarded sites on the island of Tanna,

Reports from various countries have described increasing numbers of scabies cases, especially in the past two decades. The epidemiological data for various world regions showed prevalence estimates ranging from 0.2% to 71%, with the highest prevalence in the Pacific region and Latin America. Therefore, geographically, scabies occurs more commonly in the developing world, tropical climates, and in areas with a lack of access to water. According to results from specific regions of the world, the greatest burdens from scabies were recorded for East Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, tropical Latin Am

The arbovirus vectors Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito) and Ae. albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito) are both common throughout the Indo-Pacific region, where 70% of global dengue transmission occurs. For Ae. aegypti all Indo-Pacific populations are invasive, having spread from an initial native range of Africa, while for Ae. albopictus the Indo-Pacific includes invasive populations and those from the native range: putatively, India to Japan to Southeast Asia. This study analyses the population genomics of 480 of these mosquitoes sampled from 27 locations in the Indo-Pacific. We investigated

BACKGROUND: With the increasing burden of tuberculosis (TB) in the Philippines, and the risk of multidrug resistance to TB, there is a need to strengthen the surveillance system. In many countries, cases of TB are reported to health authorities, and reporting is an effective way to manage TB. Although TB is a universal and representative reportable disease, the Philippines does not designate it as a notifiable disease.
MAIN TEXT: This study aimed to review and compare current communicable disease-related laws and regulations in the Philippines with relevant international laws and regulations

INTRODUCTION: Reducing unmet need for modern contraception and expanding access to quality maternal health (MH) services are priorities for improving women's health and economic empowerment. To support investment decisions, we estimated the additional cost and expected health and economic benefits of achieving the United Nations targets of zero unmet need for modern contraceptive choices and 95% coverage of MH services by 2030 in select Small Island Developing States.

BACKGROUND: Numerous population-based studies have documented high prevalence of scabies in overcrowded settings, particularly among children and in tropical regions. We provide an estimate of the global burden of scabies using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2015.
METHODS: We identified scabies epidemiological data sources from an extensive literature search and hospital insurance data and analysed data sources with a Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2·1, to yield prevalence estimates. We combined prevalence estimates with a disability weight, measuring d

IMPORTANCE: Stunting was used as a proxy for underdevelopment in early childhood in previous studies, but the associations between child development and other growth and body composition parameters were rarely studied.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between malnutrition and early child development (ECD) at an individual level.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based, cross-sectional study used data from the East Asia Pacific Early Child Development Scales, a population-representative survey of children aged 3 to 5 years old, conducted in 2012 to 2014 in communities i

Most Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) have developing economies and face a critical shortage of veterinarians with limited financial resources allocated to their animal disease surveillance programmes. Thus, animal health authorities have to set priorities for better focusing their scarce resources. The main objective of this study was to identify animal diseases perceived to be of importance by decision makers within selected PICTs, at the regional and national levels, to ensure better targeting of animal health resources. A second objective was to investigate whether the targ

Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) has become an increasingly important public health issue worldwide and particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in the Western Pacific Region (WPR), where access to quality mental health care remains limited. The existing evidence on CAMH in the region is fragmented and insufficient for guiding further development and improvements in CAMH services. Against this background, we conducted a scoping review to provide the most recent evidence of the resources (legal, financial, human, infrastructural) allocated to CAMH and the effectiveness

BACKGROUND: By adulthood, gender inequalities in health and wellbeing are apparent. Yet, the timing and nature of gender inequalities during childhood and adolescence are less clear. We describe the emergence of gender inequalities in health and wellbeing across the first two decades of life.
METHODS: We focused on the 40 low-income and middle-income countries in Asia and the Pacific. A measurement framework was developed around four key domains of wellbeing across the first two decades: health, education and transition to employment, protection, and a safe environment. Specific measurement c

BACKGROUND: Parasitic nematodes of vertebrates impose a substantial burden on human and animal health; however, advanced diagnostic tools for the accurate characterisation of these parasites are scarce. One promising but nascent approach is metabarcoding, which enables the simultaneous characterisation of all parasitic nematodes in a sample, termed the nemabiome. However, earlier iterations of this approach could not detect socioeconomically important nematodes such as those in the genera Strongyloides and Trichuris. Therefore, we aimed to develop a novel nemabiome method capable of detecting

IMPORTANCE: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemio

IMPORTANCE: The increasing burden due to cancer and other noncommunicable diseases poses a threat to human development, which has resulted in global political commitments reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan on Non-Communicable Diseases. To determine if these commitments have resulted in improved cancer control, quantitative assessments of the cancer burden are required.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the burden for 29 cancer groups over time to provide a framework for policy discussion, resource allocation, and research focus.
