Vasa previa is a rare disorder of the placenta. The absence of a prenatal diagnosis is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. In our patient, ultrasound findings, although atypical, successfully established the prenatal diagnosis of vasa previa in the second trimester of pregnancy. Despite the fact that the placenta was not low-lying, that it was not possible to visualize the site of umbilical cord insertion into the placental tissue, and that vasa previa was not directly visualized, the presence of blood flow near and around the internal cervical os, as seen on transvagi

BACKGROUND: Some fetal structural anomalies and cases of vasa previa may not be detectable until after mid-trimester ultrasound screening. This study evaluated the spectrum, sonographic features, and perinatal outcomes of these newly detected abnormalities.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 579 singleton pregnancies that underwent standardized mid-trimester ultrasound screening with no structural abnormalities detected at that time. Among these, 47 fetuses had anomalies newly identified before delivery. One additional pregnancy, in which multiple malformations were already detected at m

Type 3 vasa previa is a new concept. Herein, a case is reported of a 35-year-old woman, pregnant following in vitro fertilization, in whom vasa previa was detected on color Doppler ultrasound at 26 weeks, with no finding of a low-lying placenta. A cesarean section was performed at 34 weeks and 3 days. Gross examination of the placenta showed Type 3 vasa previa with findings somewhat different from previous reports: two aberrant fetal vessels with branching on the broad membrane, and central cord insertion which was farther from the longitudinal center of the placenta than were the running vess

INTRODUCTION: Benckiser's hemorrhage is a rare obstetric emergency characterized by massive genital hemorrhage during the third trimester. This condition necessitates urgent fetal extraction. Prenatal diagnosis is not routinely recommended. This article reports a case where vasa previa was diagnosed antenatally, but the pregnancy outcome was unfavorable.
CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old woman, G3P1, presented at 32 weeks gestation with pelvic pain resembling uterine contractions. A transvaginal ultrasound revealed a suspected vascular anomaly near the internal cervical os. However, at 35 WG, she re

Benckiser's hemorrhage is a rare affection associated with 75-100% neonatal mortality. It is due to the rupture of one or more velamentous and previa vessels. We report two cases, one of which was fatal for the child despite immediate neonatal management. This illustrates how difficult the obstetrical and neonatal management of this affection is. Risk factors for velamentous insertion of the cord and vasa previa are multiple pregnancies, low lying placenta, bilobed and succenturiate-lobed placenta. First we specify the pathophyisiological implication of this severe hemorrhage, then the means t

Effective management of vaginal bleeding in late pregnancy requires recognition of potentially serious conditions, including placenta previa, placental abruption, and vasa previa. Placenta previa is commonly diagnosed on routine ultrasonography before 20 weeks' gestation, but in nearly 90 percent of patients it ultimately resolves. Women who have asymptomatic previa can continue normal activities, with repeat ultrasonographic evaluation at 28 weeks. Persistent previa in the third trimester mandates pelvic rest and hospitalization if significant bleeding occurs. Placental abruption is the most

We sought to evaluate the extent of the association between placental implantation abnormalities (PIA) and preterm delivery in singleton gestations. We conducted a systematic review of English-language articles published from 1980 onward using PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS, and Google Scholar, and by identifying studies cited in the references of published articles. Search terms were PIA defined as ≥ 1 of the following: placenta previa, placenta accreta, vasa previa, and velamentous cord insertion. Observational and experimental studies were included for review if data were available

Congenital anomalies of the umbilical cord are associated with an increased risk of pregnancy and perinatal complications. Some anomalies of the cord have a higher prevalence than other fetal structural anomalies. The most common anomalies are the absence of an umbilical artery and velamentous insertion of the cord (with or without vasa previa). These anomalies, even when not associated with fetal structural defects, increase the risk of adverse perinatal outcome including, fetal growth restriction and stillbirth. In the absence of prenatal diagnosis, vasa previa is associated with the highest

A 31-year-old nulliparous woman developed vaginal bleeding after spontaneous rupture of the membranes at 40 weeks of gestation. Fetal heart rate monitoring showed checkmark and sinusoidal patterns. A 3,281 g male neonate was delivered by emergency cesarean section, with Apgar scores of 1 and 3 at 1 and 5 min, respectively. The neonate exhibited severe acidosis with arterial blood gas pH of 6.96, and was diagnosed to have severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. An umbilical artery branch was noted in the membrane near the cervical os and found to be torn, representing hemorrhagic vasa previa. S

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the widespread and routine use of ultrasound to make the diagnosis of placenta previa, evidence-based classification and management strategies have failed to evolve over the years. The purpose of this review is to present the current evidence supporting the screening, diagnosis and management of placenta previa.
RECENT FINDINGS: The prevalence of placenta previa is significantly overestimated due to the practice of routine mid-pregnancy scan, and many women currently undergo a repeat scan in late pregnancy for placental localization. Recent reports support limiting

Placenta previa is an important and potentially life-threatening cause of bleeding. Historically, it was a major contributor to maternal mortality until advancements in obstetric care, including prenatal ultrasound, cesarean delivery, and transfusion medicine, drastically improved outcomes. Today, placenta previa is typically identified during routine second-trimester ultrasound, with the overwhelming majority of cases resolving before term. Key risk factors include prior cesarean delivery, advanced maternal age, and smoking. When placenta previa is diagnosed, it is essential to assess for ass

BACKGROUND: We examined the clinical significance of pregnancies complicated by velamentous cord insertion (VCI) associated with other umbilical cord/placental abnormalities.
METHODS: Data were collected from 168 deliveries complicated by VCI and from 16,797 unaffected controls. All placentae were screened identically by trained staff. In this study, we examined the presence of excessively long umbilical cord (longer than 70 cm), vasa previa, single umbilical artery, circumvallate placenta, succenturiate placenta, lobed placenta, placenta previa, low lying placenta and placenta accrete as the

Late pregnancy bleeding, any vaginal bleeding that occurs after 20 weeks' gestation, can be due to obstetric emergencies or benign etiologies. The amount of blood loss does not always correlate with seriousness of the etiology, and the source of bleeding is often not immediately obvious. Even small amounts of blood loss should be evaluated carefully because this may be the initial symptom of emergent bleeding. Emergent obstetric etiologies include placental abruption, placenta previa, vasa previa, and uterine rupture. Placental abruption rarely presents with the classic triad of vaginal bleedi

Vaginal bleeding can occur throughout pregnancy with varied etiologies. Although history and physical examination can identify many etiologies, imaging, in particular ultrasound (US), is the backbone of current medical practice. US pregnant uterus transabdominal, US pregnant uterus transvaginal, and US duplex Doppler velocimetry are usually appropriate for the evaluation of women with painless vaginal bleeding, those with painful vaginal bleeding, and also for those with second or third trimester vaginal bleeding with suspicion of or known placenta previa, low-lying placenta, or vasa previa. In this symposium, we introduce a collection of reviews that delve into the diverse clinically relevant aspects of the placenta and umbilical cord. The symposium addresses placenta previa and abruption; pathology, genetics, and imaging of the placenta; infections of the placenta; and ischemic placental disease. The umbilical cord's essential function as a fetal lifeline is explored, with an emphasis on the clinical repercussions of its dysfunction, including vasa previa and other umbilical cord abnormalities. This curated collection of reviews, which synthesizes the placenta's and umbilical co

The placenta functions to nourish and protect the fetus. Imaging of the placenta can have a profound impact on patient management, owing to the morbidity and mortality associated with various placental conditions. To fully appreciate placental pathology, its physiology, anatomy, and variant anatomy will be outlined. Placental conditions affecting the mother and fetus include molar pregnancies, placental hematoma, abruption, previa, accreta, vasa previa, choriocarcinoma, and retained products of conception. Ultrasonography remains the definitive modality in diagnosing most of these conditions,

The placenta and umbilical cord play crucial roles in fetal development, serving as the primary interface between the mother and fetus. These structures are essential for oxygen and nutrient exchange, waste removal, and endocrine support, all of which are critical for maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Imaging plays a key role in the evaluation of normal and pathologic features of the placenta and umbilical cord, enabling early detection of complications that may affect maternal and fetal outcomes. Prenatal identification of conditions such as placenta previa, placenta accreta spectrum disorders

OBJECTIVE: To determine the accuracy of ultrasound and color flow Doppler to diagnose placenta accreta.
METHODS: Respectively, ultrasound images consistent with signs of placenta accreta (concomitant previa, numerous vascular lacunae, absent lower uterine segment between bladder-placenta, turbulent or complicated blood flow at the uteroplacental interface) were correlated with findings at the time of surgery and pathologic examination.
RESULTS: Over 64 months, 12 cases with suspected placenta accreta by ultrasound were studied. The median gestational age at first diagnosis was 25 weeks and 9
