Vascular amyloid in the aging central nervous system. Clinico-pathological study and literature review.

The clinico-pathological features of five patients with vascular amyloid restricted to the central nervous system are presented. In three normotensive patients, intracerebral hemorrhage was the dramatic manifestation of amyloid angiopathy. In two other cases, one of amyloid in an arteriovenous malformation, the other of amyloid following therapeutic radiation, amyloid deposition was asymptomatic. Clinically, amyloid angiopathy must be considered in the different diagnosis of intracerebral hemorrhage, independent of the presence of dementia. Pathologically, a factor common to the syndrome of ce

Treatment of Bile Duct Transection Injury in an Integrated System.

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States. Despite widespread adoption of safety measures, bile duct injury remains a serious complication and is associated with substantial morbidity and health care costs. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients treated for bile duct transection within Kaiser Permanente Northern California, an integrated health care system, between August 2019 and November 2025. All repairs were performed by hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgeons at designated Cente

Cuproptosis and copper deficiency in ischemic vascular injury and repair.

Ischemic vascular diseases are on the rise globally, including ischemic heart diseases, ischemic cerebrovascular diseases, and ischemic peripheral arterial diseases, posing a significant threat to life. Copper is an essential element in various biological processes, copper deficiency can reduce blood vessel elasticity and increase platelet aggregation, thereby increasing the risk of ischemic vascular disease; however, excess copper ions can lead to cytotoxicity, trigger cell death, and ultimately result in vascular injury through several signaling pathways. Herein, we review the role of cuprop

Acute Ischemia of the Upper Extremity.

Ischemia of the upper extremity is uncommon but can be seen with open or closed trauma. Those dealing with traumatic injury of the upper extremity should be conversant with techniques of vascular surgery and microsurgery to address these injuries when they occur. Closed injury can occur as well, and at times these are best managed nonoperatively. This article discusses the management of both in the acute setting.

Blood and lymphatic vascular network in bone injury repair: from molecular mechanisms to therapeutic strategies.

Although the coupled blood and lymphatic vascular systems are crucial for mammalian homeostasis, they remain understudied in skeletal contexts. The blood vessel system orchestrates oxygen delivery and waste clearance, while the lymphatic network dynamically regulates interstitial fluid balance and immune surveillance. Their embryonic codevelopment allows for synergistic microcirculatory control. Recently, increasing evidence has highlighted the critical role of the blood and lymphatic vascular networks in bone tissue repair. This network effectively promotes and accelerates bone regeneration b

Systematic review of temporary intravascular shunt use in military and civilian extremity trauma.

BACKGROUND: The use of temporary intravascular shunts (TIVS) in the setting of military and civilian trauma has grown in recent years, predominantly because of the mounting evidence of improved limb outcomes. We sought to characterize the use and outcomes of TIVS in trauma through a systematic review of military and civilian literature. METHODS: The MEDLINE, EBSCO, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases were searched for studies on TIVS use in military and civilian trauma settings published between January 2000 and March 2021. Reports lacking systematic data collection along with those with insuffici

Contemporary management of blunt aortic injury.

Blunt aortic injury is second only to head injury as the most common cause of blunt trauma related death. The past several years have seen a tremendous growth in the endovascular treatment of such trauma. Short-term and medium-term follow-up data that are emerging seem to support this trend. In this article, the authors discuss about open and endovascular management of blunt aortic injury and provide the latest information regarding endovascular repair of such injuries.

Effect of aldosterone and mineralocorticoid receptor blockade on vascular inflammation.

Aldosterone, the final product of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, is classically viewed as a regulator of renal sodium and potassium handling, blood volume, and blood pressure. Recent studies suggest that aldosterone can cause microvascular damage, vascular inflammation, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. In animal models, aldosterone-mediated vascular injury in the brain, heart, and kidneys leads to stroke, myocardial injury, and proteinuria. These effects may be modified by dietary salt intake; aldosterone-mediated vascular damage is increased in susceptible animals fed

Damage-control vascular surgery in Canada: supporting surgeons and teams.

SummaryIn Canada, trauma patients often present initially to non-trauma hospitals without vascular surgeons on site. Local surgeons need skills and support for damage-control vascular surgery. Canadian training programs in general surgery should equip trainees with skills in this area, including resuscitation, identification of vascular injury, hemorrhage control, and temporizing measures (e.g., shunts, ligation). Caring for trauma patients is a multidisciplinary endeavour; understanding local/regional skill sets and from whom to seek help is vital. Opportunities for skills maintenance should

[Surgical treatment of traumatic arteriovenous fistulas of extremities].

The number of victims with damage to the great vessels has increased in recent years due to escalation of armed conflicts. Vascular damages comprise 3% of traumatic injuries in peacetime, and their incidence increases to 15% during hostilities. False aneurysms and traumatic arteriovenous fistulas follow vascular injury in 48.9-68.7% of cases. We present open surgical treatment of traumatic arteriovenous fistulas. The issues of diagnosis, surgical tactics, algorithm of intervention and options for successful treatment are described.

Characteristics and mechanism of lower limb injury induced by landmine blast: A research in a rabbit model.

BACKGROUND: Limb injuries caused by landmine explosions are tricky to treat and difficult to protect. It is necessary to establish an animal model for studying lower limb injury and to investigate the characteristics and mechanisms of lower limb injury induced by landmine blasts. METHODS: Twenty-six mature white rabbits were randomly divided into sham group (n=10) and injury group (n=16). Landmine blast was simulated by electric detonators under the right lower limb in upright state by a special modified fixation frame. High-speed photography was used to observe the body movements.
