BACKGROUND: There is limited prospective evidence on possible differences in fracture risks between vegetarians, vegans, and non-vegetarians. We aimed to study this in a prospective cohort with a large proportion of non-meat eaters.
METHODS: In EPIC-Oxford, dietary information was collected at baseline (1993-2001) and at follow-up (≈ 2010). Participants were categorised into four diet groups at both time points (with 29,380 meat eaters, 8037 fish eaters, 15,499 vegetarians, and 1982 vegans at baseline in analyses of total fractures). Outcomes were identified through linkage to hospital record

BACKGROUND: Data on the nutritional adequacy of unsupplemented vegetarians in Northeast China are limited.
METHODS: We compared dietary intake, body composition, and serum biomarkers among vegans, lacto-ovo-vegetarians, and omnivores. This cross-sectional study included 356 adults (all diet ≥ 2 years, no supplements). Dietary intake was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative FFQ, body composition by BIA, and serum biomarkers. Kruskal-Wallis tests with Bonferroni correction were used.
RESULTS: Vegans had lower BMI (22.0 vs. 24.6 kg/m2), body fat (24.5% vs. 28.0%), and visceral fat (0.65

BACKGROUND: Concerns regarding the adequacy of vegetarian diets with respect to fracture risk continue.
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore the influence of 5 previously defined dietary patterns on hip fracture risk and whether this association is modified by concomitant calcium and vitamin D supplementation.
METHODS: The Adventist Health Study 2 is a prospective cohort study in which participants were enrolled during 2002-2007; proportional hazards regression analyses were used to estimate fracture risk. Participants reside throughout the United States and Canada. A total of 34,542 non-Hispanic

INTRODUCTION: Under consumption of certain indispensable amino acids (IAAs) is common in poorly planned vegan diets, but targeted dietary modifications through optimisation modelling can improve the overall protein adequacy and protein quality of these diets.
METHODS: Shortfalls in protein and IAAs in the existing diets of a sample of New Zealand vegans (stratified into three clusters with varying protein intake) were calculated by comparing daily intakes to individual requirements. An energy-tailored optimisation using linear programming was used to add protein-rich foods present in each ind

Plant-based diets, including vegan and vegetarian patterns, are gaining popularity among physically active individuals, including amateur runners. While such diets may offer health benefits, they also carry a risk of inadequate intake of key nutrients, among which iron plays a crucial role. This study compared diet quality, iron intake, and dietary supplementation among vegan, lactovegetarian, and omnivorous amateur runners in Warsaw, Poland. One hundred runners (52 males, 48 females; aged 18-65) were classified into vegan (n = 36), lactovegetarian (n = 10), and omnivorous (n = 54) groups. Die

Vegan lunch soups formulated with mushroom, asparagus, leek, and sea buckthorn were previously developed by our team to provide a consistent daily intake of dietary cholinesterase inhibitors. Considering the proposed continuous consumption of these functional soups, it is essential to examine any cytotoxic responses that may occur in the gastro-intestinal tract. This work starts this topic by investigating the effect of in vitro digested soups towards selected human intestinal cells and intestinal bacteria. Reduced viability of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains after 24 h of incubation

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Vegetarians and vegans are more vulnerable to vitamin B12 deficiency with severe risks of megaloblastic anemia, cognitive decline, neuropathy, and depression. An easy and simple method of supplementation consists of taking one weekly dosage of 2000 μg. However, single large oral doses of vitamin B12 are poorly absorbed. The present research evaluates the ability of two different sublingual dosages of vitamin B12 (350 μg/week vs 2000 μg/week) in improving cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) nutritional status in vegans and vegetarians with a marginal deficiency.
METHODS: A 12-week

Single studies are often cited to support claims of nutritional soundness or unsoundness regarding vegan or meat-based pet foods when compared to nutritional guidelines from authorities such as the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), and the National Research Council (NRC). However, there is little overarching evidence concerning the nutritional soundness of these different pet food types. Such overarching evidence is increasingly important as alternative vegan or meat-based pet food types become more available, such as in

There is an increasing trend today towards plant-based diets in western society, often resulting in milk restriction. In the case of very young children, the direct substitution of milk by other foods, without proper nutritional advice, may lead to a lack of nutrients and hence to growth and development alterations. This study focuses on the nutritional assessment of various commercially available plant-based drinks, to determine their adequacy as alternatives to ruminant milk, in relation to the nutritional requirements of toddlers (1-3 years old), and to establish whether other sources of nu

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Western diet is rich in saturated fats, refined sugars and meat consistent with a high-energy load and secondary risk of increased metabolic diseases including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, no data are available on potential benefit of vegan diets in NAFLD and/or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). We aimed to study prospectively the effect of a vegan diet, excluding all animal products on liver chemistry in a group of consecutive NAFLD patients.
METHODS: This was a prospective, pilot study run on 40 consecutive patients affected by NAFLD. Eight

Vitamin B12 is a critical nutrient that is often inadequate in a plant-based (vegan) diet, thus the inclusion of a reliable vitamin B12 source in a vegan diet is recommended as essential. Unfortunately, many natural sources of vitamin B12 have been proven to contain biologically inactive vitamin B12 analogues, inadequate for human supplementation. The aim of this non-randomized open trial was to determine whether supplementation with a natural Klamath algae-based product ("AFA-B12", Aphanizomenon flos-aquae algae plus a proprietary mix of enzymes) could favorably affect the vitamin B12 status

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vegans, and to a lesser extent vegetarians, have low average circulating concentrations of vitamin B12; however, the relation between factors such as age or time on these diets and vitamin B12 concentrations is not clear. The objectives of this study were to investigate differences in serum vitamin B12 and folate concentrations between omnivores, vegetarians and vegans and to ascertain whether vitamin B12 concentrations differed by age and time on the diet.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis involving 689 men (226 omnivores, 231 vegetarians and 232 vegans) fro

A vegan diet is increasingly en vogue, i.e., a diet based on plants, in which animal products are completely avoided, often for health and environmental reasons. The menu is supplemented with pulses (e.g., soy, lentils, peas), nuts (e.g., cashew, macadamia, almond, pecan, para, walnut) and seeds (e.g., chia, flaxseed) or pseudo-grains (quinoa, buckwheat). Indeed, the product range is expanding to include vegan foods such as milk alternatives (e.g., oat, almond, soy drinks) and cheese or meat substitutes (e.g., soy-based). Food allergies are also on the rise, with an increasing prevalence world

BACKGROUND: Healthy plant-based diets, such as the lacto-ovo-vegetarian and the vegan diet, offer numerous benefits to human health. Poorly designed plant-based diets, however, bear the risk for vitamin- and micronutrient deficiencies. Vitamin B12 (B12, cobalamin) is a nutrient of particular concern in both diets, and should be readily supplemented on a continuous basis to ensure adequate B12 levels and to prevent deficiencies.
CASE REPORT: This case reports describes the history of a healthy man in his mid-30s who adopted a vegan diet approximately 10 y ago. Well informed about the risks of

Vegetarian (VG) and vegan (VN) diets in childhood are of growing interest due to their perceived health and environmental benefits. Concerns remain due to the possible disruption of healthy growth and development of children because of the scarcity of evidence-based studies. Among the nutrients of special concern is vitamin B12. Therefore, the Czech Vegan Children Study (CAROTS) decided to examine the relationship between B12 metabolism parameters and B12 intake through diet and supplementation. We analyzed laboratory parameters within n = 79 VG, n = 69 VN, and n = 52 omnivores (OM) children (

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets (PBDs) are increasingly recommended for human and planetary health. However, comprehensive evidence on the health effects of PBDs in children remains incomplete, particularly in vegans.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify differences in body composition, cardiovascular risk, and micronutrient status of vegetarian and vegan children relative to omnivores and to estimate prevalence of abnormal micronutrient and cholesterol status in each group.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, Polish children aged 5-10 y (63 vegetarian, 52 vegan, 72 matched omnivores) were assessed using

This study aimed at exploiting protein-polyphenol interactions to enhance techno-functional and antioxidant properties of chickpea proteins. For this purpose, prior to protein extraction, chickpeas were rehydrated in green tea infusion (GTI). Extracted chickpea proteins (CPCGTI) contained free (90.7 μg/g) and bound (32.0 μg/g) green tea phenolics (e.g., gallic acid, catechin, epigallocatechin 3-gallate, epicatechin 3-gallate). A close association between chickpea protein and green tea polyphenols was determined considering pH-solubility profile of CPCGTI. CPCGTI showed superior antioxidant pot

Increasing concerns about environmental sustainability, farmed animal welfare and competition for traditional protein sources, are driving considerable development of alternative pet foods. These include raw meat diets, in vitro meat products, and diets based on novel protein sources including terrestrial plants, insects, yeast, fungi and potentially seaweed. To study health outcomes in cats fed vegan diets compared to those fed meat, we surveyed 1,418 cat guardians, asking about one cat living with them, for at least one year. Among 1,380 respondents involved in cat diet decision-making, heal
