Voxel-based morphometry depicts central compensation after vestibular neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who have had vestibular neuritis (VN) show a remarkable clinical improvement especially in gait and posture >6 months after disease onset. METHODS: Voxel-based morphometry was used to detect the VN-induced changes in gray and white matter by means of structural magnetic resonance imaging. Twenty-two patients were compared an average 2.5 years after onset of VN to a healthy sex-and age-matched control group. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed that all patients had signal intensity increases for gray matter in the medial vestibular nuclei and the right gracile nucleus and for w

The cholinergic system of the human hindbrain studied by choline acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry and acetylcholinesterase histochemistry.

A map of cholinergic cells of the human brainstem identified by immunohistochemistry of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) is presented, along with a map of acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-containing cells and fibers. ChAT-positive structures belong to 4 brainstem systems: the cranial motor nuclei; the parabrachial complex; the reticular system; and the vestibular system. All motor nuclei of the cranial nerves, as well as the nucleus supraspinalis, are ChAT-positive. The positively staining structures of the parabrachial system include the nucleus tegmentali pedunculopontinus, and the nuclei parabra

Stimulation of otolith irregular fibers produces a rostro-caudal gradient in activity in the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC), but not the vestibulocerebellum (VeCb).

UNLABELLED: The vestibular system is important for posture, balance, motor control, and spatial orientation. Each of the vestibular end organs have specialized neuroepithelia with both regular and irregular afferents. In otolith organs, the utricle and saccule, afferents most responsive to linear jerk (jerk - derivative of acceleration) are located in the striola and project centrally to the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) as well as the uvula and nodulus of the vestibulocerebellum (VeCb). The pattern of central neuronal activation attributed to otolith irregular afferents is relatively unkno

[Vestibular efferent neurons of the guinea pig forming projections into the saccule].

The distribution of vestibular efferent neurons projecting to the saccule and efferent neurons transmitting axons to the acoustic nerve (cochlear efferent neurons) has been studied in guinea pig by comparison using the method of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. The saccular efferent neurons are revealed bilaterally in the subendymal granular fundus of the fourth ventricle of the brain and more laterally of the facial nerve genu, ipsilaterally in the small-celled reticular nucleus as well as in nuclei of the supraolivary complex: nucleus of lateral oliva and lateral nucleu

An Indirect Pathway from the Rat Interstitial Nucleus of Cajal to the Vestibulocerebellum Involved in Vertical Gaze Holding.

The neural network, including the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC), functions as an oculomotor neural integrator involved in the control of vertical gaze holding. Impairment of the vestibulocerebellum (VC), including the flocculus (FL), has been shown to affect vertical gaze holding, indicating that the INC cooperates with the VC in controlling this function. However, a network between the INC and VC has not been identified. In this study, we aimed to obtain anatomical evidence of a neural pathway from the INC to the VC (the INC-VC pathway) in rats. Injection of dextran-conjugated Alexa Flu

Distribution of external cuneate nucleus afferents to the cerebellum: I. Notes on the projections from the main cuneate and other adjacent nuclei. An experimental study with radioactive tracers in the cat.

Transport of radioactive leucine was used to demonstrate cerebellar projections from the external cuneate nucleus (NCE) and from adjacent portions of the main cuneate nucleus (NC), of the spinal trigeminal nucleus (N.tr.sp.V) and of the vestibular nuclei. Projections from NCE and NC in part terminate over exclusive regions and in part overlap. After injections limited to NCE, labeling is found in all regions of the anterior lobe and lobule VI, in vermal lobules VII, VIII, and IX, and in medial regions of central folia of the paramedian lobule. Afferents from NC are observed in intermediate and

Functional brain imaging of peripheral and central vestibular disorders.

This review summarizes our current knowledge of multisensory vestibular structures and their functions in humans. Most of it derives from brain activation studies with PET and fMRI conducted over the last decade. The patterns of activations and deactivations during caloric and galvanic vestibular stimulations in healthy subjects have been compared with those in patients with acute and chronic peripheral and central vestibular disorders. Major findings are the following: (1) In patients with vestibular neuritis the central vestibular system exhibits a spontaneous visual-vestibular activation-de

Vestibular end organ injury induced by middle ear treatment with ferric chloride in rats.

Sensorineural hearing loss, ataxia, pyramidal signs, and vestibular deficits characterize superficial siderosis of the central nervous system. This study investigated changes in vestibular function, free radical formation, and phosphorylated cJun expression in the vestibular end organs after middle ear treatment with a ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution. A single injection of 70% FeCl3 solution into the unilateral middle ear cavity caused static vestibular symptoms, such as spontaneous nystagmus and head tilt. Asymmetric expression of c-Fos protein was observed in the bilateral vestibular nuclei

Gastric related neurons in the rat medial vestibular nucleus.

Some structural and functional peculiarities of the rat vestibular nuclei neurones involved in realisation of vestibular-gastrointestinal reflectory reactions were studied. After microinjection of a horseradish peroxidase solution in the 'gastric' area of the nucleus tractus solitarius, retrogradely-labelled cell bodies were found in caudal part of the medial vestibular nucleus. Electrical stimulation of these neurons resulted in the decrease of gastric tone. The respiratory arrest was registered simultaneously. The results suggest that activation of the identified vestibular neurons can induc

Distribution of six transplasma membrane NADH-dehydrogenases in rat brain tissue.

Transplasma membrane redox plays a significant role in cellular activation and growth. Six isoenzymes could be prepared from purified rat brain synaptic plasma membrane. Polyclonal antibodies have been prepared against six transplasma membrane oxydoreductases (PMO-I to PMO-VI) and the tissue distribution of the various iso-enzymes have been investigated in adult rat brains by means of immunohistochemistry. PMO-I is densely observed in layers I, IV and V of the parietal cortex, in CA1 of the hippocampus (except for the molecular layer), in the caudate putamen, in the dorsal, granular and ventra

Ear transplantations reveal conservation of inner ear afferent pathfinding cues.

Vertebrate inner ear neurons project into the correct brainstem nuclei region before target neurons become postmitotic, or even in their absence. Moreover, afferents from transplanted ears in frogs have been shown to navigate to vestibular nuclei, suggesting that ear afferents use molecular cues to find their target. We performed heterochronic, xenoplastic, and heterotopic transplantations in chickens to investigate whether inner ear afferents are guided by conserved guidance molecules. We show that inner ear afferents can navigate to the vestibular nuclei following a delay in afferent entry a

Vestibular effects on upper airway musculature.

The vestibular system produces a variety of compensatory responses to accelerations of the head, which include reflex responses recorded from respiratory muscle nerves of the thorax and abdomen. In order to better understand the functional significance of vestibulo-respiratory reflexes, we investigated the extent to which such responses are also present on muscle nerves of the upper airway. Experiments were conducted on adult cats that were decerebrated, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated. Electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve using short trains of current pulses evoked reflex res

Lateral Medullary Syndrome Following Injury of Lateral Vestibulospinal Tract: Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral lesions of vestibular nucleus can cause lateral medullary syndrome. Little is known about injury of medial and lateral vestibulospinal tract (VST) after dorsolateral medullary infarct. We investigated injury of the lateral VST in patients with typical central vestibular disorder using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). METHODS: Seven patients with lateral medullary syndrome and ten control subjects were recruited. For the medial VST, we determined seed region of interest (ROI) as medial vestibular nuclei of pons and target ROI on posteromedial medulla. For the lateral

Acute vestibulopathy.

Acute vestibulopathy is characterized by the acute or subacute onset of vertigo, dizziness or imbalance with or without ocular motor, sensory, postural or autonomic symptoms and signs, and can last for seconds to up to several days. Acute vestibular lesions may result from a hypofunction or from pathological excitation of various peripheral or central vestibular structures (labyrinth, vestibular nerve, vestibular nuclei, cerebellum or ascending pathways to the thalamus and the cortex). This update focuses on new aspects of the aetiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, and treatment of (i) acut

Anatomical organization of the brainstem octavolateralis area of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau.

Anatomical studies were undertaken to analyze the brainstem organization of the auditory, vestibular, and lateral line nuclei in a teleost, the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. Neuronal cytoarchitectonics and horseradish peroxidase label of cranial nerves were utilized to delineate the borders of the five octavus and two lateralis brainstem nuclei. Each of the eight octavolateralis nerves were labeled individually to compare and contrast their central projections. Projections of the three semicircular canals were found to be largely overlapping. Terminal fields were observed within the eminentia

The segregation of Calb1, Calb2, and Prph neurons reveals distinct and mixed neuronal populations and projections to hair cells in the inner ear and central nuclei.

BACKGROUND: Knockin mouse models expressing calbindin (Calb1), calretinin (Calb2), and peripherin (Prph) exhibit changes in hair cells (HCs), spiral ganglion neurons (SGN), vestibular ganglion neurons (VGNs), and their central projections. RESULTS: Developing cristae HCs show strong Calb1-positive expression, but adult HCs are mainly Calb2-positive. Utricle and saccule initially have Calb2-positive HCs and later develop Calb1-positive HCs in the striola region. Inner hair cells (IHCs) and outer hair cells (OHCs) in the cochlea express Calb2 early on. Calb1 expression in OHCs overlaps with Cal

Postural instability on one foot in patients with loss of unilateral peripheral vestibular function.

The vestibular system is a major contributor to postural control and the vestibular nuclei are closely connected to the limb spinal motor neurons. Acute loss of unilateral peripheral vestibular function results in, among others, postural instability which improves with time due to central compensatory processes. It has been shown, however, that a number of processes, such as sensorimotor restriction, drugs, and so forth, may affect the speed and the quality of compensation. Due to the difference of ipsilateral vs contralateral connectivity between the vestibular nuclei and the limb spinal moto
