Projections of the lateral terminal accessory optic nucleus of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

The connections of the lateral terminal nucleus (LTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS) of the marmoset monkey were studied with anterograde 3H-amino acid light autoradiography and horseradish peroxidase retrograde labeling techniques. Results show a first and largest LTN projection to the pretectal and AOS nuclei including the ipsilateral nucleus of the optic tract, dorsal terminal nucleus, and interstitial nucleus of the superior fasciculus (posterior fibers); smaller contralateral projections are to the olivary pretectal nucleus, dorsal terminal nucleus, and LTN. A second, major bundle pr

The effects of vibration on the neuronal activity of lateral vestibular nuclei in unilaterally labyrinthectomized rats.

Unilateral labyrinthectomy causes distinct oculomotor and postural disorder syndromes that gradually deteriorate. Simultaneously, compensatory mechanisms for the suppression of pathological disorders were activated. The current study aimed to investigate the characteristics of impulse activity in the ipsilateral and contralateral neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus of unilaterally labyrinthectomized rats during various periods of vibration exposure. A program analysis of the background impulse activity of the neurons in the right- and left-lateral vestibular nuclei of rats under normal c

Neuronal populations capable of regeneration following a combined treatment in rats with spinal cord transection.

Axonal regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI) in adult mammals is limited by inhibitors associated with myelin and the glial scar. To overcome these inhibitors, a combined approach will be required. We have previously demonstrated that, following complete SCI in rats, a combination of bridging the lesion with Schwann cell (SC)-filled guidance channels, olfactory ensheathing glia implantation, and chondroitinase ABC delivery promoted regeneration of serotonergic fibers into the lumbar spinal cord. In addition, this combined treatment significantly improved locomotor recovery. To complement

Nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear ocular motor disorders.

In the brainstem, lateral and vertical eye movements are controlled by separate structures, the former mainly in the pons and the latter in the midbrain. The abducens nucleus (VI) in the pons controls all ipsilateral eye movements, i.e., ipsilateral saccades as well as the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). This nucleus contains the abduction motoneurons, but also the internuclear neurons involved in adduction, passing through the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) before relaying in the third-nerve nucleus in the midbrain. Lesions affecting the abducens nucleus result i

Neural circuits controlling diaphragm function in the cat revealed by transneuronal tracing.

Although a number of studies have considered the neural circuitry that regulates diaphragm activity, these pathways have not been adequately discerned, particularly in animals such as cats that utilize the respiratory muscles during a variety of different behaviors and movements. The present study employed the retrograde transneuronal transport of rabies virus to identify the extended neural pathways that control diaphragm function in felines. In all animals deemed to have successful rabies virus injections into the diaphragm, large, presumed motoneurons were infected in the C(4)-C(6) spinal s

Medial vestibular nucleus in the guinea-pig: histaminergic receptors. II. An in vivo study.

In a companion paper (Serafin et al. 1992) we have demonstrated in vitro that histamine depolarizes three previously described medial vestibular nucleus neuron (MVNn) types (Serafin et al. 1991a, b). It has also been shown that this effect was exclusively mediated through postsynaptic H2 receptors. All the same, the eventual contribution of presynaptic H3 receptors to the physiological response of the MVNn to histamine remained an open question since, during the slicing procedure, any histaminergic axons projecting to the vestibular nuclei would have been interrupted. This rendered our study o

Validity of a new feedback method for the VEMP test.

CONCLUSIONS: We used a feedback method, based on a blood pressure manometer with inflatable cuff, to control the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) contraction. To obtain comparable left-right VEMP responses, it is necessary (1) to determine which cuff pressures on both sides yield identical mean rectified voltage (MRV) values of the SCM contraction and (2) to apply these cuff pressures during the VEMP test. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the SCM muscle contraction variability on the VEMP variables when applying the feedback method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects pushed with their ja

Cholinergic systems in the rat brain: IV. Descending projections of the pontomesencephalic tegmentum.

Descending projections from cholinergic neurons in the pedunculopontine and laterodorsal tegmental nuclei, collectively referred to as the pontomesencephalotegmental (PMT) cholinergic complex, were studied by use of the fluorescent retrograde tracers fluorogold, true blue, or Evans Blue in combination with choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunohistochemistry of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) pharmacohistochemistry. Pedunculopontine somata positive for ChAT or staining intensely for AChE were retrogradely labeled with fluorescent tracers following infusions into the motor nuclei of cranial nerves

Immunohistochemical localization of amylin in rat brainstem.

Immunohistochemical studies were conducted on rat brainstem using a specific polyclonal antiserum against the COOH-terminal (25-37) of human amylin. Amylin-immunoreactive cell bodies were observed in the vestibular, cochlear, trapezoid, and inner cerebellar nuclei and in the mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal nerve. Positive cell bodies were also found in lateral, gigantocellular and magnocellular reticular nuclei. Numerous amylin-immunoreactive nerve fibers were shown in the trigeminal spinal tract, in the solitary area and in the area postrema. Amylin-immunoreactive cell bodies were often s

Localization of 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in rat brain as studied by in situ hybridization.

Recent evidence suggests that brain cells can synthesize steroids de novo. The steroidogenic enzyme 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta-HSD) gene family of enzymes is involved in the biosynthesis of all classes of active steroids. In the present study, we have used in situ hybridization performed with a 35S-labeled cDNA-encoding rat type I 3 beta-HSD to localize the expression of member(s) of this gene family in the adult rat brain. A specific hybridization signal could only be detected in a restricted area of the medulla ventrally and laterally bordering the fourth ventricle. This are

Widely Distributed Neurotensinergic Neurons in the Brainstem Regulate NREM Sleep in Mice.

Classical transection studies suggest that, in addition to the hypothalamus, the brainstem is essential for non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. The circuits underlying this function, however, have remained largely unknown. We identified a circuit distributed in the midbrain, pons, and medulla that promotes NREM sleep in mice. We focused on the sublaterodorsal tegmentum, an area implicated in dual regulation of REM and NREM sleep. Transcriptomic and genetic analyses revealed that neurons positive for the neuropeptide neurotensin promote NREM sleep. Further analyses identified downstream NREM s

In vitro phosphorylation of medial vestibular nucleus and prepositus hypoglossi proteins during behavioural recovery from unilateral vestibular deafferentation in the guinea pig.

Unilateral removal of vestibular nerve input to the vestibular nuclei (e.g. by unilateral labyrinthectomy, UL) results in severe ocular motor and postural disorders which disappear over time (vestibular compensation). We investigated whether recovery of ocular motor function is temporally correlated with changes in protein phosphorylation in the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) and prepositus hypoglossi (PH; MVN/PH) in vitro. Bilateral MVN/PH were dissected from 48 guinea pigs following decapitation at 10 h, 53 h or 2 weeks post-UL, or -sham operation and frozen. Tissue extracts were incubated

Descending Influences on Vestibulospinal and Vestibulosympathetic Reflexes.

This review considers the integration of vestibular and other signals by the central nervous system pathways that participate in balance control and blood pressure regulation, with an emphasis on how this integration may modify posture-related responses in accordance with behavioral context. Two pathways convey vestibular signals to limb motoneurons: the lateral vestibulospinal tract and reticulospinal projections. Both pathways receive direct inputs from the cerebral cortex and cerebellum, and also integrate vestibular, spinal, and other inputs. Decerebration in animals or strokes that interr

Neuronal activity in the ipsilateral vestibular nucleus following unilateral labyrinthectomy in the alert guinea pig.

1. Neuronal activity was investigated in the left superior vestibular nucleus (SVN), lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN), and rostral part of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) in the alert guinea pig after a unilateral (left) labyrinthectomy was performed. Vestibular neurons were recorded either immediately (just-postoperative group, n = 6) or 1 wk after labyrinthectomy (1-wk-postoperative group, n = 6) and compared with the activity recorded in intact animals (control group, n = 6). 2. Animals were prepared for extracellular recording of single-unit activity and for eye movement recording (scl

Vestibular nuclear infarction: Case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) is a common cause of emergency admittance and has very rarely been reported due to a vestibular nucleus infarction. Initial magnetic resonance imaging studies (MRIs) including diffusion-weighted images may reveal normal results and even bedside examination tests like HINTS battery which involves head impulse test (HIT), nystagmus and test of skew can be challenging in differing a peripheral vestibulopathy from a central lesion. METHODS: Four patients seen in the emergency department with AVS and evaluated with HINTS battery, cervical ves

The mossy fiber projection of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis to the flocculus and adjacent ventral paraflocculus in the cat.

The pontine projection of the flocculus and adjacent ventral paraflocculus was investigated with antegrade and retrograde axonal tracer techniques. Injections of horseradish peroxidase into the floccular complex revealed subsets of labeled neurons in the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, the nucleus raphe pontis and the medial lemniscus. Following injections of tritiated leucine in these subsets, the topographical distribution of labeled mossy fibers in the floccular complex was studied. Cells clustered in the central part of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis project to the rostral fl

Emetic reflex arc revealed by expression of the immediate-early gene c-fos in the cat.

The organization of the central neuronal circuitry that produces vomiting was explored by mapping the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity (FLI) as a monitor of functional activity. The brainstem and spinal cord were examined in cats administered multiple emetic drugs (cisplatin, lobeline, protoveratrine, naloxone, apomorphine) or control saline injections. Some animals were decerebrated, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated to avoid possible Fos expression induced by sensory feedback or fluid depletion during vomiting. Fictive vomiting was identified in these animals by

Neurovascular compression syndrome of the brain stem with opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome combined with vestibular paroxysmia and autonomic symptoms.

We describe a rare case of neurovascular compression syndrome (NVCS) of the brain stem and opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) complicated with vestibular paroxysmia (VP) and autonomic symptoms. Moreover, we discuss the case with respect to the available information in medical literature. A 36-year-old man with vertigo and nausea had difficulty standing, and was transported by an ambulance to our hospital. He had VP, opsoclonus, cervical myoclonus, anxiety, and restless legs syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging at hospitalization showed that the dolichoectatic vertebral artery was in contact w

Corticofugal connections between the cerebral cortex and brainstem vestibular nuclei in the macaque monkey.

The distribution of cortical efferent connections to brainstem vestibular nuclei was quantitatively analysed by means of retrograde tracer substances injected into different electrophysiologically identified parts of the brainstem vestibular nuclear complex of five Java monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Three polysensory vestibular areas were found to have a substantial projection to the vestibular nuclei: area 2v located at the tip of the intraparietal sulcus, the parietoinsular vestibular cortex (PIVC) covering the most occipital part of the granular insula (Ig) and the retroinsular area (Ri or

[Reversible changes on MR images in a patient with metronidazole-induced encephalopathy].

A 66-year-old woman was diagnosed with a brain abscess. The abscess was drained by sterotactic catheter insertion. She was administered metronidazole at a dose of 2 g/day. On the 30th day of treatment, she had nausea that gradually progressed. On the 45th day, she developed a disturbance of consciousness and was admitted to our department. She was in stuporous state, and had slight vestibular and cerebellar dysfunctions. Diffusion-weighted and FLAIR brain MR images showed bilateral symmetrical high signals in the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC), cerebellar dentate nucleus, and inferior c
