A survey study was conducted on the psychosocial readjustment of 164 of the estimated 10,000-40,000 Canadians who served in Vietnam with the U.S. military. Results indicate significantly greater rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared with U.S. Vietnam veterans. Evidence of other psychosocial adjustment problems such as depression, inability to handle frustration and anger, difficulty in getting along with and trusting others, and family and marital problems, as well as poor physical health, was also found. Results suggest these problems are due, in part, to prolonged isolation

BACKGROUND: Military veterans are at elevated risk of mental health conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex-PTSD (C-PTSD), depression and anxiety, among others. To address this need, in April 2023, the National Health Service (NHS) launched Op COURAGE, a specialized mental health service for veterans.
AIMS: To describe the demographics, military history, trauma-related factors and clinical presentation, including comorbidities, of UK help-seeking veterans.
METHODS: This retrospective study used data collected from a service evaluation involving veterans referred

INTRODUCTION: The community care program within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) funds veteran care in the community. Cost of this program has increased with limited comparisons between VHA and community care hospitals. We seek to compare differences in cost of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) between VHA and community care hospitals.
METHODS: We perform a retrospective cohort review of veterans undergoing CABG between October 1, 2018, and September 30, 2020, within VHA and community care hospitals within Veteran Integrated Service Network 19. Cost of index hospitalization was m

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health issue often linked to cognitive dysfunction, with poor sleep further compounding these difficulties. While poor sleep has been shown to exacerbate post-TBI cognitive deficits, its role among Veterans remains understudied. This study examined the association between TBI history and poor sleep, as well as the interaction between TBI and sleep on subjective cognitive symptoms in a sample of 6959 Iraq/Afghanistan-era Veterans (77 % male) enrolled in the VA Million Veteran Program (MVP). Veterans completed the TBI Screening and Evaluation Progra

IMPORTANCE: Agent Orange (AO), a toxic herbicide mixture contaminated with carcinogenic dioxin, was widely used during the Vietnam War. Although epidemiologic evidence suggests AO exposure is associated with increased lymphoid malignant neoplasm risk, the details of this association and its potential interaction with genetic factors remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate (1) whether AO exposure was associated with increased risk of lymphoid malignant neoplasms, (2) associations of polygenic risk scores (PRSs) in specific lymphoid malignant neoplasms, and (3) whether there was a genetic compon

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides a shallow subsidy (i.e., subsidizing 50% of an individual's rent for two years) to Veterans experiencing housing instability. We sought to describe the characteristics of Veterans who received these subsidies. Methods. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of Veterans between 10/2019-9/2021. We identified Veteran-level characteristics associated with receiving a shallow subsidy using a multivariable two-part regression model. We also conducted qualitative interviews to identify how shallow subsidies are allocated. Results Black race, higher incom

BACKGROUND: Suicide and homelessness share many of the same risk factors, but there is little understanding of how they are related to each other.
METHODS: Data on 36 155 US adults (3101 veterans and 33 024 non-veterans) in the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions-III were analysed to examine the association between lifetime homelessness and suicide, net of other factors, in a nationally representative US sample.
RESULTS: US veterans with homeless histories were 7.8 times more likely to have attempted suicide than veterans with no homeless histories (24.5% vs 2.8

Military families experience unique stressful circumstances such as frequent moves, service-related physical and mental health difficulties, and separation from support. Although many families exhibit high resilience in response to these stressors, military children are at an increased risk for emotional and behavioral difficulties, exposure to intimate partner violence, and child maltreatment. These potential problems not only affect child functioning, but often also negatively impact family and veteran outcomes. Although the Department of Defense has enhanced efforts to address child and fam

Suicide risk management in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system is particularly challenging because of both patient characteristics and aspects of the delivery system. The prototypical suicide-prone person is an older white male with alcoholism, depression, physical problems, and poor psychosocial support. This describes a large portion of the veteran patient population. Suicide risk factors that are common in VA patients include male gender, older age, diminished social environment support (exemplified by homelessness and unmarried status), availability and knowledge of

Physical and sexual abuse are increasingly recognized as common harmful experiences for women. We surveyed 828 women veterans seeking care at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center to determine the prevalence of physical and sexual abuse experiences, both during and outside of military service. Data were collected through an anonymous, mailed questionnaire, with a response rate of 52%. Sixty-eight percent of respondents reported at least one form of abuse, and 27% reported all three. Sexual abuse was most common (55%), followed by physical abuse (48%), and rape (41%). Enlisted women, wo

PURPOSE: This study examined whether the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program has a differential impact on healthcare utilization and costs among rural and urban Veterans experiencing housing instability. Understanding geographic variation in program effects is important for guiding implementation and resource allocation within the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using national VA administrative data from October 1, 2018 to September 30, 2023. Veterans were classified as SSVF participants or eligible non-SSVF Veter

Military veterans with criminal legal involvement have a need for healthcare and housing to attenuate their risks of suicide, overdose, and homelessness. Links between criminal legal involvement and Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care are poorly understood, partly because it is challenging to correctly identify veterans with criminal legal involvement. This study's primary objective was to assess VHA data sources and codes from the electronic health record that indicate contact with Veterans Justice Programs (VJP) staff - a broad proxy for criminal legal involvement. We examined three da

INTRODUCTION: Veteran and other service member sub-populations have an increased likelihood of mental illness. Diagnosed mental health conditions among Veteran populations have been well described. However, direct self-perceptions of mental health have been under-researched. This study examined the association between Veteran status and self-perceived mental health in U.S. adults to provide better monitoring of frequent mental distress among Veteran populations. Methods: The 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) cross-sectional telephone survey data were used in this analysis

U.S. military veterans are an average 20 years older than non-veterans and have elevated rates of certain health conditions. While negative aging stereotypes have been linked to increased risk for various health conditions, little is known about the prevalence and correlates of these stereotypes in this population. Using data from a nationally representative sample of 4,069 U.S. veterans surveyed between 11/19 and 3/20, we examined (1) the current prevalence of negative aging stereotypes related to physical, mental, and cognitive health and (2) sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial factor

IMPORTANCE: The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) serves a population of veterans with a high prevalence of comorbid health conditions and increased risk for suicide.
OBJECTIVE: To replicate the findings of a previous study and assess whether exposure to angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) is associated with differential suicide risk compared with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) among veterans receiving VHA care.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nested case-control design included all suicide decedents from 2015 to 2017 with a VHA inpatient or outpatient encounter

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify specific and modifiable supported education (SEd) service needs for the veteran population. To do so, we compared veterans participating in SEd services to other veterans on campus with respect to service-related challenges, community reintegration, and academic-related challenges. Identifying independent factors that distinguish veterans receiving SEd services from other veterans on campus may help operationalize interventions that target the unique challenges in this vulnerable population.
METHOD: This study used an exploratory cross-sect

OBJECTIVES: Research shows transgender individuals experience pronounced health disparities compared with their nontransgender peers. Yet, there remains insufficient research about health differences within transgender populations. This study seeks to fill this gap by exploring how current urban/rural status is associated with lifetime diagnosis of mood disorder, alcohol dependence disorder, illicit drug abuse disorder, tobacco use, posttraumatic stress disorder, human immunodeficiency virus, and suicidal ideation or attempt among veterans with transgender-related diagnoses.
METHODS: This stu

Women U.S. military veterans face particularly high rates of homelessness, which may be associated with psychosocial experiences including unhealthy alcohol use and experience of intimate partner violence (IPV). In this study, we examined clinical social health screening data to assess the association between housing instability and (a) experience of past-year IPV victimization, and (b) unhealthy alcohol use among 554 women receiving primary care from the Veterans Health Administration. Approximately 12% of patients screened reported housing instability. Experience of past-year IPV was associa
