Microencapsulation Strategies in Veterinary Medicine: Overcoming Gastrointestinal Barriers in Monogastric and Ruminant Species.

Oral delivery of bioactive compounds in veterinary medicine offers important opportunities to improve animal health, productivity, and welfare, but its effectiveness is often limited by species-specific gastrointestinal physiology. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of microencapsulation strategies for oral veterinary delivery, focusing on species-specific gastrointestinal barriers and the formulation approaches developed to overcome them. Monogastric and ruminant animals present distinct gastrointestinal environments that compromise the stability, bioavailability, and therap

Photodynamic antimicrobial and antineoplastic therapy in veterinary medicine: current status, challenges, and perspectives.

Significant causes of morbidity in veterinary medicine are tumourigenic diseases and pathogenic infections, which pose significant threats to animal health. Traditional methods for treating tumours and bacterial infections primarily involve chemotherapy and antibiotic therapy, both of which are associated with drug resistance and adverse effects. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is gaining increasing interest in veterinary clinical practice because of its distinctive benefits such as spatiotemporal selectivity, low toxicity, fewer negative effects, and reduced risk of drug resistance. This review su

Comparative assisted reproductive technologies in human and veterinary medicine: implications for reproductive success.

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have been widely and successfully used in both humans and livestock. However, only in humans and cattle have in vitro fertilization (IVF), in vitro embryo culture (IVC), and embryo transfer (ET) developed into large commercial sectors. The major differences between human and animal ART include the rationale of the treatment and the patient groups. While ART is used to treat infertility in humans, veterinary ART aims to maximize genetic gain and minimize generation intervals. Human ART is filled with societal, cultural, and emotional challenges, whereas

Selenium, copper and iron in veterinary medicine-From clinical implications to scientific models.

Diseases related to copper, selenium or iron overload or deficiency are common and well-described in large animal veterinary medicine. Some of them certainly have the potential to serve as useful animal models for ongoing research in the field of trace elements. Obvious advantages of large animal models compared to laboratory animal models like rats and mice are the option of long-term, consecutive examinations of progressive deficient or toxic stages and the opportunity to collect various, high volume samples for repeated measurements. Nevertheless, close cooperation between scientific discip

[Non-invasive patient monitoring in veterinary medicine: pulse oximetry and capnography. II. Capnography].

Capnography measures carbon dioxide concentration or partial pressure of the respiratory gas continuously and non-invasively. The endtidal value is of great diagnostic value, it corresponds approximately to the arterial value, except for ventilation-perfusion-mismatching (horse), shunting (horse), or increased dead-space-ventilation (panting in the dog). Capnography primarily serves for monitoring of spontaneous and artificial ventilation, it is a reliable method for detecting hypo- and hyperventilation. Because metabolism and circulation influence the amount of carbon dioxide eliminated in th

Experiencing Violence from Animal Owners in Veterinary Medicine: Results of a Nationwide Survey.

Background/Objectives: Veterinarians are among the most stressed of all professional groups. Their work is characterised by long working hours, high emotional demands and an increased risk of anxiety, depression, suicide and burnout. The aim of this cross-sectional study that examines retrospective records of experienced violence was to analyse the frequency of violent acts and their connection to certain factors (age, gender, place of work, and specialist area according to animal species). Methods: This nationwide, cross-sectional, online survey of veterinarians in Germany was conducted betwe

Postmortem Abdominal Ultrasound in Healthy Wild Mammals for Application in Forensic Veterinary Medicine.

Diagnostic imaging methods have been used in human medicine to identify and examine cadavers to determine the cause of death. In veterinary medicine, the use of these resources is still scarce and little known, and it is necessary to establish the contribution that methods such as ultrasound could provide to the investigation of the cause of death in domestic and wild animals. Postmortem ultrasonography (PMUS) can help forensic science find injuries that even in conventional necropsy go unnoticed. Thus, knowing the sensitivity and accuracy of the method is important and, therefore, the present

Tick-borne zoonoses and commonly used diagnostic methods in human and veterinary medicine.

Around the world, human health and animal health are closely linked in terms of the One Health concept by ticks acting as vectors for zoonotic pathogens. Animals do not only maintain tick cycles but can either be clinically affected by the same tick-borne pathogens as humans and/or play a role as reservoirs or sentinel pathogen hosts. However, the relevance of different tick-borne diseases (TBDs) may vary in human vs. veterinary medicine, which is consequently reflected by the availability of human vs. veterinary diagnostic tests. Yet, as TBDs gain importance in both fields and rare zoonotic p

Reported rabies pre-exposure immunization of students at US Colleges of Veterinary Medicine.

In 2008, the US experienced a disruption in human rabies vaccine supplies, leading public health authorities to prioritize vaccine release for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and limit vaccine supplies for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PreEP) in high-risk groups. In 2008, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) surveyed its member institutions on rabies vaccination policies and practices. Senior administrators at Colleges of Veterinary Medicine (CVMs) and departments of veterinary science and comparative medicine were asked to identify the person most knowledgeable about th

Novel gastroretentive controlled-release drug delivery system for amoxicillin therapy in veterinary medicine.

Beta-lactam antimicrobials, commonly used in both veterinary and human medicine, generally present short biologic half-lives, whereas their activity is enhanced as pathogen exposure is prolonged. These properties necessitate multiple-dose regimens of standard dosage forms, thereby hampering pet owner adherence, frequently resulting in therapeutic failure. This study presents a novel controlled-release gastroretentive oral drug delivery system for beta-lactams with which single-dose administration provides an effective antimicrobial course, optimizing pharmacokinetic (PK)-pharmacodynamic (PD) p

Evaluating the occurrence of veterinary medicines at farm scale and the efficacy of current groundwater modelling.

The use of contaminated animal manures as an organic fertilizer offers a sustainable approach to waste recycling; however, it also presents a potential threat towards the environment, and human health. This study examines the presence/absence of veterinary medicines in pig slurries, soils, and groundwater at a commercial pig farm for one year. Pig slurry concentrations ranged from 0.004 μg/kg to 1.2 mg/kg (d/w) for azaperone, oxytetracycline, lincomycin, sulphadiazine and trimethoprim respectively. Following the application of contaminated slurry to land, antibiotics were detected (≤10 cm dept

Development and initial evaluation of a rigid rhinoscopy model as a pedagogic tool in veterinary medicine.

No model exists to train the handling skills required for successful performance of rigid rhinoscopy in veterinary patients. The complex anatomy of the nasal cavity, the limited space between turbinates, and the propensity of the mucosa to bleed with slight trauma make thorough examination of a nasal cavity difficult. The goal of this study was development and initial testing of a low fidelity canine rigid rhinoscopy training model for veterinary novices. A model comprising three tubes of various lumen diameters that were connected to a conduction system was created. Each tube contained three

Bioaccumulation of selected veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis).

Veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) are widely used within the fish farming industry to control sea lice infestations. There is concern that wild and farmed mussels in the vicinity to these fish farms may be exposed and subsequently bioaccumulate these chemicals, which could pose a threat to human health. To understand the fate of these chemicals in the environment, controlled laboratory exposures were performed to establish the uptake and depuration of selected VMPs in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The VMPs included teflubenzuron, emamectin benzoate and deltamethrin. The effects of salin
