Understanding the efficacy of antimicrobials against pathogens from clinical samples is critical for their responsible use. The manuscript presents in vitro efficacy and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes in seven species of fish pathogens from the disease outbreaks of Indian aquaculture against oxytetracycline, florfenicol, oxolinic acid, and enrofloxacin. In vitro efficacy was evaluated by minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration. The gene-specific PCR screened AMR genes against quinolones (qnrA, qnrB, and qnrS) and tetracyclines (tetM, tetS, tetA, tetC, tetB

Naturally present antibacterial activity directed against Vibrio alginolyticus was demonstrated in coelomocytes lysate (CL) and cell-free coelomic fluid (CF) of the marine echinoderm Paracentrotus lividus. Kinetic analysis revealed that 5 min of contact was enough to induce significant bactericidal effect. Maximum activity required 30 min of contact. Nonsensitive to the effect of trypsin, the activity was almost completely suppressed by incubation with subtilisin. Purified from CL by three successive steps of chromatography (gel filtration, anion exchange, reverse phase), active antibacterial

Interleukin-18 (IL-18), a pro-inflammatory cytokine of the IL-1 family, is crucial for protecting the host against pathogen infection in mammals. In this study, a IL-18 homolog gene was cloned from large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) (LcIL-18), which has an open reading frame (ORF) of 609 bp that encodes a polypeptide of 202 amino acids. The LcIL-18 C-terminus contains a typical IL-1 family signature and a caspase cleavage site. Phylogenetic analysis showed that LcIL-18 was most closely related to IL-18 of Miichthys miiuy. It was found that LcIL-18 was constitutively expressed in all 12

Bacterium is still one of the major causes of life-threatening microbial infections. The most effective way to control bacterial infections is probably vaccine prevention. However, development of bacterial vaccine, especially polyvalent vaccines that could be used to fight against a variety of bacterial serotypes and species, is challenging due to the difficulty in identifying broad cross-protective antigens for different serotypes and species of pathogenic bacteria. In the present study, we developed a new approach to identify polyvalent vaccine candidates from outer membrane (OM) proteins of

Interleukin-19 like (IL-19L) is a member of the interleukin-10 family and plays a crucial role in inflammation, immune regulation, and other biological processes. Although the characteristics and functions of IL-10 family members in mammals have been elucidated, those of IL-19L in fish remain poorly understood. In this study, we cloned the IL-19L gene from the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea), designated as LcIL-19L. The open reading frame (ORF) of LcIL-19L comprises 684 base pairs, encoding 227 amino acids, and lacks a signal peptide. It possesses a typical IL-10 domain and six cons

The present work was performed to evaluate the levels of phytochemical constituents and the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of marine red seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) and seagrass (Cymodocea serrulata). Quantitative phytochemical analysis, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity against five potential pathogenic bacteria was investigated. In each case, we found the presence of flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, glycosides, steroids, carbohydrates and ashes. Alkaloids were only found in K. alvarezii, though they were not found in C. serrulata. The antimicrobial propert
