Supporting Children Who Experience Domestic Violence: Evaluating the Child Witness to Domestic Violence Program.

Impacting 1 in 4 children in the United States, childhood exposure to domestic violence predicts myriad negative sequelae. Intervening post exposure is critical to help children and their protective parent heal and avoid long-term negative consequences. Children aged 2-17 and their mothers who were victims of domestic violence participated in a 12-week group program delivered by domestic violence agency staff that provides psychoeducation on the impact of trauma and domestic violence and aims to improve parent and child well-being. The impact of the Child Witness to Domestic Violence (CWDV) pr

Violence Against Women in Hong Kong: Results of the International Violence Against Women Survey.

In Hong Kong, nearly 1,300 women participated by telephone in the International Violence Against Women Survey in 2006. One in five respondents had experienced violence since age 16. Sexual violence (13.4%) was more frequent than physical violence (11.7%). Women were more likely to be abused by men they knew (13.5%) than by strangers (8%). Compared with other surveyed countries, Hong Kong recorded among the lowest rates of violence by both intimate partners and non-partners. These results suggest that cultural influences linked to the interaction of modernization and some protective factors fou

The contribution of childhood family violence on later intimate partner violence among robbery victims.

This study examined the relative contributions of the three forms of childhood family violence exposure on physical intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization among recent robbery victims and tested a gender-matching modeling prediction for IPV risk. Data from a sample of 103 male and 93 female victims of a robbery were analyzed to investigate the effects of exposure to childhood physical abuse (CPA), childhood sexual abuse (CSA), and witnessing parental violence on the likelihood of IPV in adulthood. As expected, witnessing parental violence was associated with a 2.4-fold increase in IPV f

Physical violence against intimate partners and related exposures to violence among South African men.

BACKGROUND: Despite high rates of intimate partner violence in South Africa, there have been no national studies of men's perpetration of violence against female partners. METHODS: We analyzed data from the South Africa Stress and Health Study, a cross-sectional, nationally representative study, specifically examining data for men who had ever been married or had ever cohabited with a female partner. We calculated the prevalence of physical violence against intimate female partners and used logistic regression to examine associations with physical abuse during childhood and exposure to parent

Childhood family violence history and women's risk for intimate partner violence and poor health.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for associations between generations in family violence and between family violence in both childhood and adulthood and women's health. Most studies focus on a subset of family violence (child abuse, witnessing intimate partner violence [IPV] as a child, and/or adult IPV), and few examine possible differences associated with the nature of abusive experiences, such as physical versus sexual abuse. METHODS: A population-based telephone survey, the 1999 and 2001 Washington State Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, asked a representative sample of 352

School Violence towards Peers and Teen Dating Violence: The Mediating Role of Personal Distress.

School violence towards peers and teen dating violence are two of the most relevant behaviour problems in adolescents. Although the relationship between the two types of violence is well established in the literature, few studies have focused on mediators that could explain this empirical relationship. We departed from the evidence that relates anger, emotional distress and impaired empathy to teen dating violence and juvenile sexual offending, to explore the role of personal distress, i.e., a self-focused, aversive affective reaction to another's emotion associated with the desire to alleviat

Relationship Violence, Fear, and Exposure to Youth Violence Among Adolescents in New York City.

Previous research has shown that there is an overlap between experiences of youth violence and adolescent relationship violence. Yet, little research exists which investigates the sex differences in the associations between specific types of youth violence and relationship violence while controlling for potential confounders. This study addresses this gap in the literature by exploring the associations between experiences of youth violence and receiving and delivering relationship violence in an urban adolescent sample. From 2006 to 2007, 1,454 adolescents aged 13 to 21 years in New York City

Workplace violence, intimate partner violence, and depression in nurses: the mediating role of impostor syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a global mental health concern and demonstrates high prevalence among nurses, significantly impairing their quality of life. Previous studies have identified impostor syndrome (IS), workplace violence (WPV), and intimate partner violence (IPV) as risk factors for depression. It has been hypothesised that WPV and IPV may promote the development of IS, which in turn could lead to depression; however, these relationships have not been empirically confirmed. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of IS in the relationships between WPV, IPV, and depression a

'Family Violence and Football' at 15: Revisiting the Effect of Emotional Cues on Intimate Partner Violence.

This paper revisits the famous Card and Dahl study on emotional cues on intimate partner violence (IPV). This paper was one of the first to explore the effects of seemingly irrelevant outcomes-in this case, local National Football League (NFL) game outcomes-on incidents of IPV, finding that upset NFL losses are associated with a 10% increase in IPV. This paper briefly describes the current state of the "emotional cue" literature, specifically further extensions related to IPV, and then applies the Card-Dahl model to an updated 25-year crime dataset. Results suggest a deviation from the previou

"Violence isn't a simple thing": practitioner perspectives on the role of acquired brain injury in violence.

PURPOSE: Violent behaviour after Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) contributes to adverse outcomes for survivors of ABI. Yet findings are mixed regarding injury-related health and social needs that increase violent behaviour after ABI. Practitioners who work with survivors of ABI have unique insight into service user needs, challenges, and outcomes. This study explored practitioner perspectives on the role of ABI in violent behaviour. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight individual semi-structured interviews were completed with health and social practitioners (6 male, 2 female). RESULTS: The phenomenologi

Exposure to violence in childhood and risk of violence in adult schizophrenia: Results from a multinational study.

This study investigated the connection between childhood violence exposure and violent behavior in adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs). The case-control study included 398 SSD patients: 221 cases with a history of severe interpersonal violence in the past and 177 controls with no history of violence. The findings indicated that cases were significantly more likely to report childhood exposure to all forms of witnessed or personally sustained violence both within and outside the family, with those who had witnessed intra-familial violence being more likely to assault a family me

Cycles of violence in England and Wales: the contribution of childhood abuse to risk of violence revictimisation in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal violence is a leading cause of death and disability globally, has immediate and long-term impacts on individuals' health and wellbeing, and impacts global health care expenditures and national economies. A public health approach to violence prevention is crucial, and addressing risk factors is a key priority. Global research has demonstrated that childhood adversity increases risk of a range of poor outcomes across the lifecourse. This study examined the association between being a victim of child abuse and the risk of physical assault (PA), intimate partner violence

What is Violence? The Role of Sexism and Social Dominance Orientation in Recognizing Violence Against Women.

Violence against women represents a global public health issue of epidemic proportions, as well as a gross violation of women's human rights. It can take many forms, such as physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. The purpose of the study was to extend past research on recognition of violence against women within the framework of the ambivalent sexism theory and the social dominance orientation (SDO) theory. Specifically, we investigated the following: (a) to what extent different behaviors potentially harming women are recognized as a form of viol
