Photographic Depiction of the Field of View with Spectacles-mounted Low Vision Aids.

SIGNIFICANCE: Photographic depiction helps to illustrate the primary and secondary field of view effects of low vision devices along with their utility to clinicians, patients, and caretakers. This technique may also be helpful for designers and researchers in improving the design and fitting of low vision devices. PURPOSE: The field of view through spectacles-mounted low vision devices has typically been evaluated using perimetry. However, the perimetric field diagram is different from the retinal image and often fails to represent the important aspects of the field of view and visual parame

The use of contact lenses in low vision rehabilitation: optical and therapeutic applications.

Ocular pathology that manifests at an early age has the potential to alter the vision-dependent emmetropisation mechanism, which co-ordinates ocular growth throughout childhood. The disruption of this feedback mechanism in children with congenital or early-onset visual impairment often results in the development of significant ametropia, including high levels of spherical refractive error, astigmatism and anisometropia. This review examines the use of contact lenses as a refractive correction, low vision aid and therapeutic intervention in the rehabilitation of patients with bilateral, irrever

[Congenital retinal macrovessel: an atypical presentation with low vision and macular thickening].

CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 35 year old male patient with no medical history, who experienced decreased vision in his left eye that he noticed by chance. After a complete ophthalmic examination, he was diagnosed with congenital retinal macrovessel with macular thickening. DISCUSSION: Congenital retinal macrovessels are rare vascular anomalies, in which the diagnosis is usually incidental as their visual impact is minimal. In the rare cases where there is a significant visual impairment, this is due to macular hemorrhages, foveal cysts, serous macular detachment, or the course of the ve

Will my child see me again? Addressing children's vision impairment through surgeries, optical correction, and low vision services in Northern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Blindness and low vision in children remain significant public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These conditions are often underdiagnosed and undertreated due to limited access to specialized services, spectacles, and assistive devices, posing critical challenges to health equity. The Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Programme (CBLVP) in Northern Malawi, Africa aimed to address these gaps through capacity building, advocacy, improved access to regular eye health and low vision assessments, and the provision of spectacles and low vision devices. Associations between patient-reported vision impairment in low luminance and vision-related quality of life in intermediate age-related macular degeneration.

Intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD) reduces vision under low-luminance conditions, affecting quality of life (QoL). The Vision Impairment in Low Luminance (VILL) questionnaire captures QoL domains relevant in iAMD but most AMD studies use the generic vision-related QoL measure Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ). To investigate associations between these generic and specific vision-related QoL instruments, and explore the added value of including the VILL over the NEI VFQ in future iAMD studies, we analysed cross-sectional study data from individuals with iAMD. Association

Tutorial: Exploring the Speech-Language Pathologist's Role in Childhood Blindness and Low Vision.

PURPOSE: Children with vision differences face unique challenges in accessing classroom communication, which can affect language development, academic achievement, and social participation. To ensure effective communication, professionals must understand each child's diverse access needs and individual preferences. Professionals must also be aware of the nature of the child's lived visual experience, including the strategies that allow the child with low vision to access sustained and meaningful vision, compared to those strategies preferred by the child who is blind. METHOD: This tutorial di

First Evaluation of a Retinal Imaging Laser Eyewear System Based Low Vision Aid.

PURPOSE: We conducted this trial to investigate a new wearable laser-eyewear (LEW). Images of an integrated camera are projected to the retina by a RGB-Laser (<1µW) and MEMS-mirror system. This enables a full-color live video as augmented reality embedded in the field of vision of the wearer. Thin parallel laser beams are projected following the principle of Maxwellian view through the center of the ocular lens to ensure independency of refractive errors. We performed a study with healthy subjects to test this independency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: LEW was tested in 20 healthy subjects (aged be
