UNLABELLED: The demographic change with a rising proportion of very old people and diminishing resources leads to an intensification of the use of telemedicine and home care concepts. To provide individualized decision support, data from different sources, e.g. vital signs sensors and home environmental sensors, need to be combined and analyzed together. Furthermore, a standardized decision support approach is necessary.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of our research work is to present a laboratory prototype home care architecture that integrates data from different sources and uses a decision support sy

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is commonly framed as a model of accelerated aging, yet clinical decisions still rely heavily on chronological age, which poorly captures heterogeneity in functional status, vascular health, cognition, and recovery potential. This narrative review argues that biologic age-a multidomain construct integrating frailty and physical performance, body composition, cardiovascular and vascular markers, inflammatory and metabolic profiles, and cognitive/psychosocial factors-should be treated as a "missing vital sign" in CKD. Such composite measures can refine risk stratific

Photoplethysmography (PPG) enables non-invasive estimation of vital signs across a range of sensors, from wrist wearables and clinical monitors to smartphone cameras. We present parameter-efficient, end-to-end deep models for heart rate (HR), blood oxygen saturation ( SpO 2 ) and respiratory rate (RR) estimation. These models operate directly on PPG signals and integrate preprocessing as a layer. Our family of fully convolutional architectures includes a baseline FCN, a residual FCN, a ConvNeXt-inspired FCN and a compact DCT-based variant. These models achieve strong cross-dataset performan

BACKGROUND: Physical activity (PA) is important for the prevention and treatment of numerous chronic medical conditions. Individuals with a limb amputation face unique challenges for staying physically active. There are few studies evaluating PA of civilians with amputation in the United States.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate self-reported PA in persons with an amputation in the outpatient setting using a standardized exercise vital sign (EVS) and correlate PA with demographic information, amputation characteristics, and disease burden.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study.
SETTING: Outpatie

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized patients generally have elevated levels of emotional distress. Gaining a better under-standing of the problem of emotional distress among hospitalized patients is conducive to providing appropriate emotional care and promoting their recovery.
PURPOSE: To analyze the scores for the "sixth vital sign" (i.e., emotional distress), diversification, and the health-related problems of hospitalized patients at a medical center in Taiwan. The results may offer an important reference for providing effective emotional care to hospitalized patients.
METHODS: A retrospective desc

A three-stage study to develop and test an unobtrusive room sensor unit and subject data management system to discover correlation between sensor-based time-series measurements of sleep quality and clinical assessments of combat veterans suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), is described. Experiments and results for testing sensitivity and robustness of the sensor unit and data management protocol are provided. The current sensitivity of remote vital sign monitoring system is below 20% and 10% for respiration and heart rates, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of rapid response systems to identify deteriorating patients in the inpatient setting has demonstrated improved patient outcomes. A "trigger" system using vital sign abnormalities to initiate evaluation by physician was recently described as an effective rapid response method.
OBJECTIVES: The objective was to evaluate the effect of a triage-based trigger system on the primary outcome of time to physician evaluation and the secondary outcomes of therapeutic intervention, antibiotics, and disposition in emergency department (ED) patients.
METHODS: A separate-samples

INTRODUCTION: The Hunger Vital Sign (HVS) is a two-item, validated food insecurity screener recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Given its brevity, HVS could be useful in assessing food insecurity in pregnant populations, for whom high-quality nutrition and food access is essential. However, the HVS has not been evaluated in obstetric settings. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the performance of the HVS compared to the gold standard, the 18-item US Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) among low-income, urban pregnant people.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study at a mult

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients requiring emergency transfer (ET) to an intensive care unit (ICU) have higher in-hospital morbidity and mortality. Understanding clinical indicators preceding transfer in those requiring emergent intervention can inform the development of tools focused on early recognition of clinical deterioration.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patterns of clinical deterioration in vital sign and nursing assessment data before ET vs non-ET to the ICU from acute care units.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective case-cohort study was conducted at a quaternary pediatric hospital of p

BACKGROUND: To study the feasibility of measuring heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) on the forehead, during newborn transition at birth, and to compare these measurements with those obtained from the wrist.
METHODS: Vital signs were measured and compared between forehead-mounted reflectance (remittance) photoplethysmography sensor (fhPPG) and a wrist-mounted pulse oximeter sensor (wrPO), from 20 enrolled term newborns born via elective caesarean section, during the first 10 min of life.
RESULTS: From the datasets available (n = 13), the median (IQR) sensor placement times for fhPP

BACKGROUND: Decisions regarding the evaluation of children with influenza infection rely on the likelihood of severe disease. The role of early vital signs as predictors of severe influenza infection in children is not well known. Our objectives were to determine the value of vital signs in predicting hospitalization/recurrent emergency department (ED) visits due to influenza infection in children.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of children aged 6 months to 8 years of age with influenza like illness evaluated at an ED/UC from 2016-2018. All children underwent influenza testing by P

BACKGROUND: Continuous heart rate (HR) and oxygenation (SpO2) metrics can be useful for predicting adverse events in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. To optimize the utility of these tools, inter-site variability must be taken into account.
METHODS: For VLBW infants at three neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), we analyzed the mean, standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, and cross-correlation of electrocardiogram HR, pulse oximeter pulse rate, and SpO2. The number and durations of bradycardia and desaturation events were also measured. Twenty-two metrics were calculated hourly, and me

BACKGROUND: Vital signs monitoring is key to identifying deteriorating hospital patients. However, adherence to monitoring protocols is limited, with observations frequently missed or delayed. Previous studies of interruptions and delays to vital signs observations have been descriptive, with none attempting to conceptualise the types of tasks that are prioritised over vital signs observations.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to explore how nursing teams perform vital sign observations on acute hospital wards and conceptualises which types of work delay or interrupt them.
DESIGN: Non-participant

Wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are increasingly incorporated into healthcare, including perioperative settings. These devices offer continuous non-invasive monitoring of vital signs, patient position, and mobilization. Nonetheless, there is currently little information about tolerance and acceptance of wearables in postoperative patients. We therefore assessed opinions and user experience in postoperative patients who used three popular fitness trackers during their entire hospital stay. Specifically, we evaluate the Apple Watch 7, Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, and Withings ScanWatc

BACKGROUND: One third of ambulance patients receive non-specific diagnoses in hospital. Mortality is 3-4%, however due to the high patient volume this group accounts for 20% of all deaths at day 30. Non-specific diagnoses do not provide much information on causes for death. Vital signs at first contact with ambulance personnel can act as a proxy for the patient's condition. Thus, we aimed to describe the prevalence of abnormal vital signs, as determined by a modified NEWS2, in ambulance patients who received a non-specific hospital diagnosis. Secondly, we examined the association between vital

AIM: This randomised-controlled trial aims to examine the effect of regional massage performed before blood collection on pain and vital signs in term newborns.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of a total of 96 term newborns, 49 in the experimental group and 47 in the control group, in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Before the blood collection process, those in the experimental group received two (2) minutes of massage on their blood collection region, and their pain levels and vital signs were observed. Data were collected using a newborn information form, an intervention follow
