The influence of molecular weight on the optical parameters of silicone oil endotamponades for vitreoretinal surgery.

Introduction Silicone oil, more specifically polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) of different molecular weight, is an established endotamponade in vitreoretinal surgery. As emulsification is a feared complication of their intraocular use, high molecular weight compounds (HMWCs) may be added to modify their physicochemical properties lowering emulsification tendency. However, the optical properties of various HMWCs, as well as blends of silicone oils with different fractions of HMWC have never been studied in a controlled laboratory setting and compared with each other. Optical parameters, such as forw

PHYSICAL FACTORS INFLUENCING THE COMPLETENESS OF REMOVAL OF RESIDUAL PERFLUOROCARBON LIQUID IN VITREORETINAL SURGERY.

PURPOSE: Postoperative perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) retention would lead to serious complications, especially retinal toxicity and intraocular inflammation. This study aimed to elucidate the roles of air infusion pressure and residual balanced salt solution in PFCL evaporation during vitreoretinal surgery, thereby optimizing residual PFCL removal, minimizing complications, and improving patient outcomes. METHODS: Evaporation rates of perfluoro-n-octane and perfluoro-decalin were studied using a 3D-printed eye model under varying air infusion pressures from 10 to 40 mmHg. Computational fluid

Scleral imbrication with vitreoretinal surgery as a primary procedure for retinal detachment in pathological myopia.

A 45-year-old male presented with diminution of vision in the right eye (RE) for the past 2 weeks. He underwent sequential bilateral cataract surgery 25 years ago, with an intraocular lens in RE, which was his better eye. The left eye was aphakic with a thick fibrous membrane at the pupillary plane. Visual acuity was hand movement in the RE with the iris claw lens and total bullous retinal detachment (RD). The axial length with RD was 28.6 mm in RE and 29 mm in the left eye (LE). We did a vitrectomy with scleral imbrication, endolaser, fluid gas exchange, and tamponade in the RE. The LE develo

We reported a case of simultaneous vitrectomy and sclerokeratoplasty (SKP) performed for keratoglobus with extensive corneal rupture and intraocular hemorrhage caused by trauma. A 73-year-old woman was treated for keratoglobus and glaucoma. She was punched in both eyes, her right eye showed corneal rupture and the left eye showed prolapse of the ocular contents due to eyeball rupture. She immediately underwent corneal sutures in the right eye and resection of the prolapsed ocular contents in the left eye at a nearby ophthalmological clinic. Three days after the injury, the patient was referred
