Temporal stability of parent-reported behavior problems in late talkers over 2 years: a prospective case-control study from toddlerhood to preschool age.

BACKGROUND: Late talking (LT) in toddlers is a risk factor for language weakness that may interfere with the development of using language to regulate behavior and emotion and contribute to the development of behavior problems from early childhood. This study examined the temporal stability of parent-reported behavior problems among Mandarin-speaking LT toddlers from ages 2 to 4 in Taiwan. METHODS: Thirty-one LT and 31 typical language development (TLD) toddlers were assessed for their vocabulary production at age 2 with the Words and Sentences Forms of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Devel

Speech Recognition in Noise by Children with and without Dyslexia: How is it Related to Reading?

PURPOSE: Developmental dyslexia is commonly viewed as a phonological deficit that makes it difficult to decode written language. But children with dyslexia typically exhibit other problems, as well, including poor speech recognition in noise. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the speech-in-noise problems of children with dyslexia are related to their reading problems, and if so, if a common underlying factor might explain both. The specific hypothesis examined was that a spectral processing disorder results in these children receiving smeared signals, which could explain both th

Cardiovascular exercise, learning, memory, and cytokines: Results of a ten-week randomized controlled training study in young adults.

Physical exercise has been shown to enhance memory and to increase neuroplasticity. Rodent studies have revealed modulating effects of signaling molecules of the immune system (cytokines) on hippocampal plasticity and memory. Acute and chronic exercise have been both found to alter the number and function of immune cells. Thus, physical exercise might enhance neuroplasticity via an altered immune response. In this study we tested whether multiple repetitions of a vocabulary learning task combined with a bout of cardiovascular exercise enhances learning in humans and whether memory improvements

Heterogeneity in the effect of mid-childhood height and weight gain on human capital at age 14-15 years: Evidence from Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Under-nutrition in early childhood has harmful impacts on human capital formation in children, with implications for educational, adult health, and labor market outcomes. We investigate the association of linear growth and weight gain in mid-childhood with years of schooling, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test score, and math test score during the adolescent age of 14-15 years. METHODS: Data were derived from the Young Lives study conducted in four low- and middle-income countries (Ethiopia, India, Peru, and Vietnam). The data had detailed information on the children anthropometr

Knowledge about basic language constructs among teachers of English as a Foreign Language in China and South Korea.

The purpose of the present study is to explore cross-cultural differences among teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) on the basic language constructs and the impacts on their perceived teaching ability in English-reading instruction. Chinese EFL (n = 73) and Korean EFL (n = 39) teachers were administered the Reading Teacher Knowledge Survey for testing their implicit and explicit knowledge on phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, phonics, and morphological awareness; and their self-perceived teaching ability on teaching typical readers, struggling readers, phonemic awareness,

Late talking and the risk for psychosocial problems during childhood and adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Although many toddlers with expressive vocabulary delay ("late talkers") present with age-appropriate language skills by the time they are of school age, little is known about their broader behavioral and emotional profile. The aim of this study was to determine whether late talkers are at increased risk for behavioral and emotional problems during childhood and adolescence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants were from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort Study. Early expressive vocabulary was measured by parent report at age 2 years using the Language Development Survey. Late t

Chinese EFL teachers' knowledge of basic language constructs and their self-perceived teaching abilities.

The present study examined the knowledge and skills of basic language constructs among elementary school teachers who were teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in China. Six hundred and thirty in-service teachers completed the adapted Reading Teacher Knowledge Survey. Survey results showed that English teachers' self-perceived ability to teach vocabulary was the highest and self-perceived ability to teach reading to struggling readers was the lowest. Morphological knowledge was positively correlated with teachers' self-perceived teaching abilities, and it contributed unique variance ev

Relationship of temporal lobe volumes to neuropsychological test performance in healthy children.

Ecological validity of neuropsychological assessment includes the ability of tests to predict real-world functioning and/or covary with brain structures. Studies have examined the relationship between adaptive skills and test performance, with less focus on the association between regional brain volumes and neurobehavioral function in healthy children. The present study examined the relationship between temporal lobe gray matter volumes and performance on two neuropsychological tests hypothesized to measure temporal lobe functioning (visual perception-VP; peabody picture vocabulary test, third

Assessment of intelligence quotient in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease and multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is common in people living with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). However, there is little published data on intelligence quotient (IQ) in NMOSD patients. Therefore, we performed the present study to compare IQ scores across NMOSD, MS, and control groups. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 49 NMOSD (30 with positive aquaporin4 antibody), 41 MS, and 20 control individuals were recruited. The IQ score for each person was measured using Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R). Participants were reported on e

Longitudinal assessment of children with enteroviral meningitis during the first three months of life.

Nine children who had enteroviral meningitis during the first three months of life and nine matched control children were evaluated for possible sequelae of their infection. The mean age of the children with meningitis was 46.67 months at the time of testing and that of the control subjects was 47.33 months. The mean IQ level of 89.67 obtained in the control children. Receptive vocabulary testing suggested that the receptive language functioning of the group with meningitis was significantly less than that of the control group. There was no significant difference in head circumference, no dete

AI-supported visual-semantic word teaching from the perspective of educational psychology: instant gains in Turkish acquisition, computational choice, and learners' psychological experience.

BACKGROUND: Teaching Turkish to A1-A2 learners relies heavily on word selection and multimodal presentation. While traditional curricula prioritize frequency-based lists, they often underestimate the visual-semantic dimension critical for novice learners. Computational tools such as Word2Vec and CLIP offer a data-driven alternative by quantifying word-image alignment, yet their pedagogical efficacy in authentic classrooms remains empirically underexamined. Furthermore, the comparative effectiveness of AI-generated versus authentic photographs in vocabulary instruction constitutes an unresolved

A Domain-Specific Terminology for Retinopathy of Prematurity and Its Applications in Clinical Settings.

A terminology (or coding system) is a formal set of controlled vocabulary in a specific domain. With a well-defined terminology, each concept in the target domain is assigned with a unique code, which can be identified and processed across different medical systems in an unambiguous way. Though there are lots of well-known biomedical terminologies, there is currently no domain-specific terminology for ROP (retinopathy of prematurity). Based on a collection of historical ROP patients' data in the electronic medical record system, we extracted the most frequent terms in the domain and organized

The detrimental impact of alcohol intoxication on facets of Miranda comprehension.

OBJECTIVE: Law enforcement officers often encounter alcohol-intoxicated suspects, suggesting that many suspects are presented with the challenge of grasping the meaning and significance of their Miranda rights while intoxicated. Such comprehension is crucial, given that Miranda is intended to minimize the likelihood of coercive interrogations resulting in self-incrimination and protect suspects' constitutional rights. Yet, the effects of alcohol on individuals' ability to understand and appreciate their Miranda rights remain unknown-a gap that the present study sought to address. HYPOTHESES:

Dementia in Parkinson disease: a neuropsychological analysis.

An extensive set of neuropsychological measures was administered to 60 Parkinson's disease patients and age-, sex-, and education-matched controls in order to investigate the nature and prevalence of the cognitive deficit in the disease. Parkinsonian patients performed significantly poorer on all measures with the exception of tests for apraxia and object recognition, and on a test of vocabulary knowledge. Discriminant analysis of the test data revealed that over 93% of patients are impaired relative to matched controls, but that assigning a prevalence rate for dementia in the disease may be d
