Is deinstitutionalization working in our community?

This exploratory study examined the impact of deinstitutionalization on consumers admitted to a regional community care unit (CCU) between 1996 and 2007, and looked at lengths of stay and re-admissions to acute psychiatric care units and the impact this might have on quality of life. The results showed that the original and current residents of CCU have improved quality of life through friendships, a home-like environment, and reduced re-admissions to acute psychiatric care units; however, further improvements can be made with more emphasis on employment/vocational services and social inclusio

Modern management of rheumatoid arthritis.

The management of rheumatoid arthritis can be challenging even to the most experienced and astute physician. The rheumatoid inflammatory process can be profound, ravaging, and unremitting, and the illness is notorious for its protean manifestations and capricious course. Moreover, the response to therapy is unpredictable, although it can be quite successful in many cases. Nevertheless, the intense pain, profound disability, progressive destructive arthropathy, and negative psychological milieu that haunt patients demand that something be done therapeutically. Rheumatoid arthritis responds best

The "Big C"-stigma, cancer, and workplace discrimination.

PURPOSE: Stigma and workplace discrimination have been identified as prominent challenges to employment following cancer. However, there has been limited examination of how stigma develops in work contexts and how it influences cancer survivors' return to work process and their disclosure decisions. METHODS: In the broader study from which this paper emerges, we used an exploratory qualitative design to examine the return to work process (including workplace supports and accommodations) of cancer survivors. We conducted 40 semi-structured interviews with (i) cancer survivors (n = 16), (ii) he

[Social medicine significance, costs, course, therapy and prognosis of venous diseases].

In particular chronic venous diseases are of considerable sociomedical and socioeconomic significance, and often start early in the age of professional activity. In Germany the number of early retirement is about 2.500 per year. Nevertheless they lack the well-deserved acceptance in the medicopolitical and sociomedical sector, what in addition makes the care for persons suffering from venous diseases at their place of work more difficult, as well as the problematic assessment of chronic venous diseases anyhow and the suitable rehabilitation. Even if there is no occupational disease which manif

Essential embryology for the Canadian pathologists' assistant.

Pathologists' assistants (PAs) are pivotal in healthcare, conducting autopsies and examining tissues under a pathologist's guidance. Embryology knowledge is crucial for PAs to accurately assess anomalies and identify pathologies. Yet, it is often overlooked in academic PA training programs. Given the cognitive demands on students and limited curricular time, integrating embryology requires the identification of vocationally relevant topics. This study sought to determine essential embryology learning objectives (LOs) for PAs by consulting practicing PAs and pathologists. Beginning with an init

Components of Psychosocial Treatments for Perinatal Mental Health Problems in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings: A Scoping Review.

Perinatal mental health problems (PMHP) are a critical public health concern, profoundly affecting mothers and their infants by impairing maternal well-being and mother-infant bonding. The burden is especially high in conflict-affected settings, where trauma, violence, and ongoing adversity amplify risk. This scoping review mapped the existing literature to identify core components, delivery methods, and structures of psychosocial treatments for PMHP in conflict and post-conflict regions, and examined how trauma and violence were addressed. Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidance, 150 studi

The aim of our study was to appraise CPGs for non-pharmacological conservative management of CRPS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We systematically searched five electronic databases, from inception to January 2025, to include CPGs that focused on non-pharmacological conservative management of CRPS. We used AGREE-II to evaluate the quality of the CPGs. Recommendations, aims, and treatment algorithms of the CPGs were presented in a narrative format, thematic analysis, and matrixes to sum
