Optimal selection of wavelet-packet-based features using genetic algorithm in pathological assessment of patients' speech signal with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) is one of the most severe types of neurogenic laryngeal disorder in which the patients, due to their vocal cords malfunction, are confronted by some serious problems. As the effect of such pathologies would be significantly evident in the reduced quality and feature variation of dysphonic voices, this study is designed to scrutinize the piecewise variation of some specific types of these features, known as energy and entropy, all over the frequency range of pathological speech signals. In order to do so, the wavelet-packet coefficients, in five consecutiv

SVM-based identification of pathological voices.

This paper proposed a support vector machine (SVM) based classification method to identify diversified pathological voices. Sound signals were sampled from the pronunciation of a vowel "a" vocalized by 214 subjects, including 181 patients suffered from various dysphonias (such as polypoid degeneration, adductor spasmodic dysphonia, vocal fatigue, vocal tremor, vocal fold edema, hyperfunction, and erythema), and 33 healthy subjects. 25 acoustic parameters were calculated from the sampled data for each subject. The original acoustic dataset was first transformed via principal component analysis

[Chronic laryngitis--associated factors and voice assessment].

BACKGROUND: Chronic laryngitis may be a predisposing factor for laryngeal carcinoma. METHOD: 100 consecutive chronic laryngitis patients were assessed for associated factors for this disease. Voice assessment was undertaken, including objective measurement, subjective assessment of sound and a self-assessment by questionnaire--the so-called Voice Handicap Index (VHI). When laryngostroboscopy of the vocal cords was suspicious, then microlaryngoscopy with biopsy and histological examination was undertaken. RESULTS: The main associated factors were found to be nicotine abuse (50 patients), gast

Functional topography of working memory for face or voice identity.

We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate whether the neural systems for nonspatial visual and auditory working memory exhibits a functional dissociation. The subjects performed a delayed recognition task for previously unfamiliar faces and voices and an audiovisual sensorimotor control task. During the initial sample and subsequent test stimulus presentations, activation was greater for the face than for the voice identity task bilaterally in the occipitotemporal cortex and, conversely, greater for voices than for faces bilaterally in the superior temporal sulcus/gyr

Identifying Physiological and Cognitive Indicators of Subthreshold Depression and Major Depressive Disorder Progression Risk.

PURPOSE: Subthreshold depression (StD), depressive symptoms below the diagnostic threshold for major depressive disorder (MDD), is associated with functional impairment and increased risk of MDD onset, but its physiological and cognitive characteristics remain unclear. This study aimed to identify objective markers of StD and validate predictive factors for MDD onset. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 168 university students, participants were classified into a StD group (n=87) and a healthy control group (n=81) using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). The StD group was further subdivided i

Voice Evaluation of Patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyposis: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common disabling condition that affects 5-12% of the general population. The impact of CRS on voice has garnered interest due to the increasing number of individuals relying on their voice professionally. Previous studies have shown inconsistent results due to heterogeneous study groups and varying outcome measures. The objective of this study was to investigate the voice characteristics of a large homogenous group of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) and normal laryngeal examination. METHODS: Adult patients prese

User-centered design of a rule-based expert system for autonomous menstrual management: an expert-validated voice assistant for women with visual impairments.

OBJECTIVE: Most women with visual impairments rely on others, particularly their mothers, in managing menstruation. They also face unique challenges that are more complex than those experienced by other members of society. This highlights a privacy gap in menstrual health management among women with visual impairments. This study aims to design and evaluate a voice-based assistive technology that integrates voice-based interaction and a decision tree approach to support autonomous menstrual management and reproductive hygiene among women with visual impairments. METHODS: This study adopted a

Low-Cost Human-Machine Interface for Computer Control with Facial Landmark Detection and Voice Commands.

Nowadays, daily life involves the extensive use of computers, since human beings are immersed in a technological society. Therefore, it is mandatory to interact with computers, which represents a true disadvantage for people with upper limb disabilities. In this context, this work aims to develop an interface for emulating mouse and keyboard functions (EMKEY) by applying concepts of artificial vision and voice recognition to replace the use of hands. Pointer control is achieved by head movement, whereas voice recognition is used to perform interface functionalities, including speech-to-text tr

Voice and physical appearance in female-to-male transsexuals.

The study aims to investigate if a similar interaction between physical appearance and voice could be found in female-to-male transsexuals as had been observed in male-to-female transsexuals. A panel of judges rated "maleness" of seven female-to-male transsexuals from video-recorded speech samples using three modes of presentation: auditory-only presentation, visual-only presentation, and audiovisual presentation. For the group of transsexuals as a whole, no significant differences were found between scores given in the auditory-only mode or the visual-only mode and those given in the audiovis

Artificial Intelligence-Enabled End-To-End Detection and Assessment of Alzheimer's Disease Using Voice.

There is currently no simple, widely available screening method for Alzheimer's disease (AD), partly because the diagnosis of AD is complex and typically involves expensive and sometimes invasive tests not commonly available outside highly specialized clinical settings. Here, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered end-to-end system to detect AD and predict its severity directly from voice recordings. At the core of our system is the pre-trained data2vec model, the first high-performance self-supervised algorithm that works for speech, vision, and text. Our model was internally ev

Perception of Social Odor and Gender-Related Differences Investigated Through the Use of Transfer Entropy and Embodied Medium.

The perception of putative pheromones or social odors (PPSO) in humans is a widely debated topic because the published results seem ambiguous. Our research aimed to evaluate how cross-modal processing of PPSO and gender voice can affect the behavioral and psychophysiological states of the subject during a listening task with a bodily contact medium, and how these effects could be gender related. Before the experimental session, three embodied media, were exposed to volatilized estratetraenol (Estr), 5α-androst-16-en-3 α-ol (Andr), and Vaseline oil. The experimental session consisted in listeni

Pronouns and Advocacy in Medicine.

In September 2019, a prominent dictionary recognized they as a proper pronoun for nonbinary individuals. This change can be seen as a source of newfound legitimacy for students and trainees self-advocating for nonbinary pronoun recognition in health care practice and training. This article considers one student's experience after coming out as nonbinary and voicing that their pronouns are they/them.

Word form generalization across voices: The role of infant sleep.

Infant sleep plays a crucial role in various aspects of language development, including the generalization of visual and auditory stimuli. The relative role of daytime naps and nocturnal sleep in these memory generalization processes is debated, with some studies observing significant generalization following a post-encoding nap and others observing it following nocturnal sleep, but only in cases where a post-encoding nap had occurred on the previous day. We conducted an online experiment with 8-month-old infants to determine whether a nap immediately following auditory exposure to words spoke
