Solid-phase-extraction device for extracting volatile organic compounds from gaseous samples.

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a sample preparation technique typically used for purifying target analytes in liquid samples prior to instrumental analysis, such as chromatographic analysis. Typical SPE device consists of packing particulate adsorbent into a glass or plastic cartridge. In the sample preparation process, the target analytes are extracted onto the adsorbent by loading the liquid sample into the SPE cartridge and separated from other contaminants. Then, the extracted compounds are eluted by the organic solvent. This article summarizes the SPE devices designed for extracting vola

Blood concentrations of volatile organic compounds and hypertension in the GuLF Study.

While certain criteria air pollutants have been associated with elevated blood pressure and risk of hypertension, there is limited research on the relationship of hazardous air pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOC), to these outcomes. We investigated associations of blood concentrations of selected VOCs with hypertension prevalence and blood pressure among participants in the Gulf Long Term Follow-up (GuLF) Study, a large prospective cohort study of individuals who participated in cleanup of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We examined 582 participants who had blood conce

Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds by Marine Sponges: Implications for Coastal Bioremediation.

Sponges (Porifera) are among the oldest known animal-microbe symbioses and are key players in marine biogeochemical cycles. Ubiquitous across benthic marine habitats, they process dissolved organic matter and participate in chemosynthetic pathways. We quantified, for the first time, volatile organic compounds (VOCs, namely, halomethanes, sulfur-containing compounds, and isoprene) in the inhaled and exhaled water of three Mediterranean sponge species: two high-microbial abundance (HMA), Aplysina aerophoba and Agelas oroides, and one low-microbial abundance (LMA), Dysidea avara. Using the Vacusi

Characterizing everyday exposure to volatile organic compounds and upper respiratory health effects.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are relatively understudied pollutants compared to particulate matter but are ubiquitous in outdoor and indoor environments. Prior studies on VOCs on sinonasal health have been difficult to generalize due to limitations in their definitions of VOC exposures. We took a novel, holistic approach to characterize a major fraction of daily VOC exposure and its link to sinonasal health. Our study included 981 participants (mean ages = 58.8 years, ranges = 40-80 years) from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) with available urinary

[Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Volatile Organic Compounds in Zhanjiang in Summer].

Ozone pollution is intensifying in China, and its related studies are weak in non-focus regions and non-focus cities. Here, we investigated the characteristics and sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at three sampling sites in Zhanjiang. We analyzed 101 VOCs using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/hydrogen ion flame detector (GC-MS/FID) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) using a Summa canister and DNPH adsorption tube. We calculated the ozone formation potential (OFP) of VOCs and used the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model for source apportionment. The resul

Al2O3/ZnO Heterostructure-Based Sensors for Volatile Organic Compounds in Safety Applications.

Monitoring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in harsh environments, especially for safety applications, is a growing field that requires specialized sensor structures. In this work, we demonstrate the sensing properties toward the most common VOCs of columnar Al2O3/ZnO heterolayer-based sensors. We have also developed an approach to tune the sensor selectivity by changing the thickness of the exposed amorphous Al2O3 layer from 5 to 18 nm. Columnar ZnO films are prepared by a chemical solution method, where the exposed surface is decorated with an Al2O3 nanolayer via thermal atomic layer deposi

Non-volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath particles correspond to active tuberculosis.

Human breath contains trace amounts of non-volatile organic compounds (NOCs) which might provide non-invasive methods for evaluating individual health. In previous work, we demonstrated that lipids detected in exhaled breath aerosol (EBA) could be used as markers of active tuberculosis (TB). Here, we advanced our analytical platform for characterizing small metabolites and lipids in EBA samples collected from participants enrolled in clinical trials designed to identify molecular signatures of active TB. EBA samples from 26 participants with active TB and 73 healthy participants were processed

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) as Environmental Pollutants: Occurrence and Mitigation Using Nanomaterials.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) comprise various organic chemicals which are released as gases from different liquids or solids. The nature and impact of the health effects are dependent on the VOCs concentrations and, also, on the exposure time. VOCs are present in different household, industrial or commercial and products, but their accumulation in air and water has primarily gained attention. Among VOCs, trichloroethylene and vinyl chloride are the most toxic and carcinogenic compounds. In order to improve the indoor air and water quality, VOCs can be removed via efficient approaches invo

Source-Specific Volatile Organic Compounds and Emergency Hospital Admissions for Cardiorespiratory Diseases.

Knowledge gaps remain regarding the cardiorespiratory impacts of ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for the general population. This study identified contributing sources to ambient VOCs and estimated the short-term effects of VOC apportioned sources on daily emergency hospital admissions for cardiorespiratory diseases in Hong Kong from 2011 to 2014. We estimated VOC source contributions using fourteen organic chemicals by positive matrix factorization. Then, we examined the associations between the short-term exposure to VOC apportioned sources and emergency hospital admissions for cau

[Component Characteristics and Source Appointment of Volatile Organic Compounds in Lianyungang City].

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important precursors of ozone and particulate matter; thus, their impacts on air quality are particularly significant. To study the composition characteristics and sources of VOCs in Lianyungang City, four national control sites were selected to conduct VOCs sampling and analysis on typical days in spring, summer, and autumn. Concentrations of VOCs, the effects of different components of VOCs on ozone formation were quantified, and the sources of VOCs were analyzed using the Positive Matrix Factorization model. The VOC concentrations were in the range of 2

Evaluation of the kinetic oxidation of aqueous volatile organic compounds by permanganate.

The use of permanganate solutions for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is a well-established groundwater remediation technology, particularly for targeting chlorinated ethenes. The kinetics of oxidation reactions is an important ISCO remediation design aspect that affects the efficiency and oxidant persistence. The overall rate of the ISCO reaction between oxidant and contaminant is typically described using a second-order kinetic model while the second-order rate constant is determined experimentally by means of a pseudo first order approach. However, earlier studies of chlorinated hydrocarb
