Concurrent validity of walking speed values calculated via the GAITRite electronic walkway and 3 meter walk test in the chronic stroke population.

The purpose of this study was to provide novel information regarding the concurrent validity (primary aim) and reliability (secondary aim) of walking speed (WS) calculated via the GAITRite electronic walkway system and 3 meter walk test (3MWT) in the chronic stroke population. The 3MWT is a feasible option for clinicians working in environments where space is limited. Psychometric properties of the test have not been established. Participants with chronic stroke were stratified into three groups: (1) household ambulators (HA) (self-selected WS < 0.4 m/s, 12 participants, 31 observations); (2)

Evaluating effects of synchronous music reinforcement on increasing treadmill walking speed in a stepwise fashion.

This study evaluated the effects of synchronous music reinforcement on walking speed in a laboratory-based treadmill preparation. Thirty undergraduate students walked on a nonmotorized treadmill for a 15-min session consisting of an initial continuous music component, three synchronous reinforcement components, and a final continuous music component. During the initial continuous music component (CM 1), participants received continuous access to self-selected music, and their mean speed was used to set individualized criteria for the synchronous components. In the synchronous components, music

Application of synchronous music reinforcement to increase walking speed: A novel approach for training intensity.

Walking is a common and preferred form of exercise. Although there are current recommendations for walking volume (e.g., steps per day), recent research has begun to distinguish volume from intensity (e.g., "brisk" walking) as an important dimension of exercise. Increasing intensity may confer health advantages beyond volume measures because it shifts cardiovascular performance to more vigorous training zones. Reinforcement-based approaches have been valuable in increasing volume measures of exercise, and the present study sought to develop a corresponding reinforcement approach to training wa

Characteristics associated with gait speed improvements from walking interventions for older adults: A responder analysis.

BACKGROUND: Some older adults benefit to a great degree from walking interventions and others experience little improvement. Understanding the personal characteristics associated with greater treatment response to different interventions could assist clinicians in providing patients with matched interventions to optimize both outcomes and resource use. RESEARCH QUESTION: What personal characteristics are associated with improved gait speed for older adults participating in walking interventions? METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of 236 older adults from a trial comparing "Standard" (low

A three-dimensional spring-loaded inverted pendulum walking model considering human movement speed and frequency.

The spring-loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model is an effective model to capture the essential dynamics during human walking and/or running. However, most of the existing three-dimensional (3D) SLIP model does not explicitly account for human movement speed and frequency. To address this knowledge gap, this paper develops a new SLIP model, which includes a roller foot, massless spring, and concentrated mass. The governing equations-of-motion for the SLIP model during its double support phase are derived. It is noted that in the current formulation, the motion of the roller foot is prescribed;

Sex-specific decline in prefrontal cortex mitochondrial bioenergetics in aging baboons correlates with walking speed.

Mitochondria play a crucial role in brain aging due to their involvement in bioenergetics, neuroinflammation and brain steroid synthesis. Mitochondrial dysfunction is linked to age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. We investigated changes in the activities of the electron transport chain (ETC) complexes in normally aging baboon brains and determined how these changes relate to donor sex, morning cortisol levels, and walking speed. Using a novel approach, we assessed mitochondrial bioenergetics from frozen prefrontal cortex (PFC) tissues

The Effect of Cognitive Task, Gait Speed, and Age on Cognitive-Motor Interference during Walking.

Dual-tasking can cause cognitive-motor interference (CMI) and affect task performance. This study investigated the effects of age, gait speed, and type of cognitive task on CMI during gait. Ten younger and 10 older adults walked on a pressure-sensitive GAITRite walkway which recorded gait speed and step length. Participants walked at a slow, preferred, or fast speed while simultaneously completing four cognitive tasks: visuomotor reaction time (VMRT), serial subtraction (SS), word list generation (WLG), and visual Stroop (VS). Each combination of task and speed was repeated for two trials. Tas

Effects of change in walking speed on time-distance parameters in post-stroke hemiplegic gait.

OBJECTIVES: In stroke patients, the assessment of gait ability over time is important. For quantitative gait assessment using measuring devices, the walking speed condition for measurement is generally based on the patient's preferred walking speed or the maximum walking speed at the time of measurement. However, because walking speed often increases during the convalescent stage, understanding the effects of change in walking speed on gait when comparing the course of recovery is necessary. Although several previous studies have reported the effects of change in walking speed on gait in strok

Speed-dependent interplay between local pattern-generating activity and sensory signals during walking in Drosophila.

In insects, the coordinated motor output required for walking is based on the interaction between local pattern-generating networks providing basic rhythmicity and leg sensory signals, which modulate this output on a cycle-to-cycle basis. How this interplay changes speed-dependently and thereby gives rise to the different coordination patterns observed at different speeds is not sufficiently understood. Here, we used amputation to reduce sensory signals in single legs and decouple them mechanically during walking in Drosophila. This allowed for the dissociation between locally generated motor

Effect of progressive horizontal resistive force on the comfortable walking speed of individuals post-stroke.

BACKGROUND: Individuals post-stroke select slow comfortable walking speeds (CWS) and the major factors used to select their CWS is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which slow CWS post-stroke is achieved through matching a relative force output or targeting a particular walking speed. METHODS: Ten neurologically nonimpaired individuals and fourteen chronic stroke survivors with hemiplegia were recruited. Participants were instructed to "walk at the speed that feels most comfortable" on a treadmill against 12 progressively increasing horizontal resistive force levels applied at t

Gait asymmetry during early split-belt walking is related to perception of belt speed difference.

Gait adaptation is essential for humans to walk according to the different demands of the environment. Although locomotor adaptation has been studied in different contexts and in various patient populations, the mechanisms behind locomotor adaptation are still not fully understood. The aim of the present study was to test two opposing hypotheses about the control of split-belt walking, one based on avoidance of limping and the other on avoiding limb excursion asymmetry. We assessed how well cerebellar patients with focal lesions and healthy control participants could sense differences between

Caregiving, metabolic syndrome indicators, and 1-year decline in walking speed: results of Caregiver-SOF.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress may lead to health decline through metabolic syndrome. Thus, persons in stressful caregiving situations who also have more indicators of metabolic syndrome may experience more decline than other caregivers or noncaregivers. METHODS: The sample included 921 women (338 caregivers and 583 noncaregivers) from the Caregiver-Study of Osteoporotic Fractures study. Participants had home-based baseline and 1-year follow-up interviews between 1999 and 2003. At baseline, caregivers were categorized as long term ((3)4 years) versus short term (<4 years), and caring for someone

The influence of increasing steady-state walking speed on muscle activity in below-knee amputees.

The goal of this study was to identify changes in muscle activity in below-knee amputees in response to increasing steady-state walking speeds. Bilateral electromyographic (EMG) data were collected from 14 amputee and 10 non-amputee subjects during four overground walking speeds from eight intact leg and five residual leg muscles. Using integrated EMG measures, we tested three hypotheses for each muscle: (1) there would be no difference in muscle activity between the residual and intact legs, (2) there would be no difference in muscle activity between the intact leg and non-amputee legs, and (

Using gait score, walking speed, and lying behavior to detect hoof lesions in dairy cows.

The objective was to determine whether changes in the different components of gait, walking speed, and lying behavior were associated with hoof pathologies in lactating Holstein cows. In experiment 1, 53 cows had their gait scored, their walking speed estimated, and their lying behavior monitored before clinical assessment of the hooves. Multiparous cows with ulcers scored higher than cows without ulcers for overall gait score [numerical rating score (NRS); 3.3 +/- 0.2 vs. 2.8 +/- 0.2], back arch, joint flexion, asymmetric steps, and reluctance to bear weight. Although cows with ulcers did not
