Removal of uranium(VI) from water using hydroxyapatite coated activated carbon powder nanocomposite.

Synthesis of hydroxyapatite coated activated carbon nanocomposite was carried out by in-situ chemical precipitation method. Different characterizations confirm that, hydroxyapatite successfully coated over activated carbon powder. Extensive sorption studies of U(VI) on the nanocomposite were conducted to know the effect of contact time, humic acid, carbonate, ionic strength and pH. The study revealed that, the composite material is a more efficient sorbent for U(VI) compared to precursors, which removes U(VI) ion without altering physicochemical properties of water. Sorption exhibits multilaye

Chromosomal aberration analysis among underground water well workers in Saudi Arabia.

In the absence of permanent rivers or bodies of water, half of the Saudi Arabia domestic water consumption is provided through desalination. The other half is derived from groundwater. Groundwater from the Disi aquifer is already used for drinking water in parts of Jordan and, more extensively, in Saudi Arabia, where it is known as the Saq aquifer. Some of the geological analyses of the host sandstone aquifer rocks show (228)Ra and (226)Ra. The usefulness of chromosomal aberrations analysis as a bioindicator for ionising radiation effect was tested in underground water well workers of Saudi Ar

Source Contributions to Air Pollution in the Permian Basin: Evaluating Emissions from Unconventional Oil and Gas Activities.

Unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD) has enabled the extraction of previously inaccessible hydrocarbon resources, leading to a rapid proliferation of well sites across shale regions, often in close proximity to residential communities. Air emissions from UOGD pose potential health risks, yet few studies have captured their full complexity or temporal variability using long-term, high-resolution monitoring. We conducted one year of continuous stationary air pollution monitoring in Loving, New Mexico, a high-production area of the western Permian Basin. Measurements included nitrogen ox

Effects of cooking on radiocesium in fish from the Savannah River: exposure differences for the public.

Understanding the factors that contribute to the risk from fish consumption is an important public health concern because of potential adverse effects of radionuclides, organochlorines, other pesticides, and mercury. Risk from consumption is normally computed on the basis of contaminant levels in fish, meal frequency, and meal size, yet cooking practices may also affect risk. This study examines the effect of deep-frying on radiocesium (137Cs) levels and risk to people fishing along the Savannah River. South Carolina and Georgia have issued consumption advisories for the Savannah River, based

Autotrophic Uranium (VI) bioreduction in groundwater by siderite: Comparison with sulfur and zero-valent iron.

Uranium (U), recognized as a significant health risk in groundwater, has become a key focus in environmental remediation efforts. While numerous electron donors have been investigated for the removal of U(VI) through microbial processes, the potential of abundant and economical Fe(II)-containing minerals remains unexplored. Here, a new inorganic electron donor, siderite (FeCO3) was proposed. Although siderite demonstrates a lesser electron-donating capacity than Fe(0) and S(0), the Siderite-B bioreactor successfully enriched microbes belonging to the Azotobacter genus, which are known for thei

Effective Dose Rate Coefficients for Immersions in Radioactive Air and Water.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Center for Radiation Protection Knowledge (CRPK) has undertaken a number of calculations in support of a revision to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Federal Guidance Report on external exposure to radionuclides in air, water and soil (FGR 12). Age-specific mathematical phantom calculations were performed for the conditions of submersion in radioactive air and immersion in water. Dose rate coefficients were calculated for discrete photon and electron energies and folded with emissions from 1252 radionuclides using ICRP Publication 107

[Lichens as rapid bioindicators of pollution and habitat disturbances in the tropics].

Lichens have value as bioindicators of environmental pollution, climate change, and ecological continuity. Extensive work has been undertaken in temperate areas, but in only few cases have the techniques been applied in the tropics. Most tropical studies to date are in relation to air pollution and forest disturbance, but these are scattered geographically and remain to be undertaken in most tropical regions. The potential of lichens as rapid bioindicators in the tropics can start to be realized even where the species described are not fully identified as they are perennial and separable by ey

Determining metal assimilation efficiency in aquatic invertebrates using enriched stable metal isotope tracers.

We employ a novel approach that combines pulse-chase feeding and multi-labelled stable isotopes to determine gut passage time (GPT), gut retention time (GRT), food ingestion rate (IR) and assimilation efficiency (AE) of three trace elements for a freshwater gastropod. Lettuce isotopically enriched in (53)Cr, (65)Cu and (106)Cd was fed for 2h to Lymnaea stagnalis. The release of tracers in feces and water was monitored for 48 h, during which unlabelled lettuce was provided ad libidum. The first defecation of (53)Cr occurred after 5h of depuration (GPT), whereas 90% of the ingested (53)Cr was re

Green preparation of regenerable biohybrids with xanthan gum-stabilized biogenic mackinawite nanoparticles for efficient treatment from high-concentration uranium wastewater.

The high efficiency, economy, sustainability and no secondary pollution of U(VI) removal is an important and challenging topic for U(VI) wastewater treatment. Here, the regenerable biohybrids with xanthan gum (XG) stabilized biogenic mackinawite nanoparticles (BX-FeS) were prepared, where XG acted as carrier facilitated the Fe2+ attachment and induced the low size, high stability and activity of nearly spherical FeS nanoparticles. Results showed that BX-FeS kept high activity after storing two years and good performance for U(VI) removal in broad pH range and co-existence of ions, and had grea

Groundwater uranium origin and fate control in a river valley aquifer.

Groundwater in a Quaternary gravel aquifer partly exhibits uranium (U) concentrations exceeding the new German drinking water limitation (22% of the samples >10 μg L(-1)). This study assesses relevant U reservoirs and hydrogeochemical processes responsible for U transfer between them. A large data set of solid materials (sediments and soils, 164 samples total) and groundwater (114 samples total) characteristics was created in terms of geo- and hydrochemistry, mineralogy, U microdistribution, and mobilization potential. Results show that U primarily derived from lignitic inclusions in Tertiary

Limitations on upper bound dose to adults due to intake of 129I in drinking water and a total diet-implications relative to the proposed Yucca Mountain high level radioactive waste repository.

The purpose of this report is to comment on the potential annual doses due to the intake by adults of I, an important radionuclide in the proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain. An often overlooked, but significant, factor is that, in this case, the ground water, which would be the primary transport vehicle for any releases, contains relatively high concentrations of stable iodine (127I); in fact, the median concentration in the ground water in the vicinity of the proposed repository is 5.0 microg L-1. In comparison, the maximum concentration of 129I in the ground w

Chronic radiation exposure in the Rivne-Polissia region of Ukraine: implications for birth defects.

OBJECTIVES: The health effects of chronic low-dose radiation exposure remains a controversial question. Monitoring after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in Ukraine suggested that chronic low-dose radiation exposure was not linked to cancer mortality among the general population. However, elevated rates of birth defects in contaminated compared to uncontaminated regions suggest that exposure to radiation in utero might impact development and that chronic radiation exposure might represent an underestimated risk to human health. METHODS: We sought to determine current radiation exposure routes i

Uranium in Drinking Water and Bladder Cancer: A Case-control Study in Michigan.

Uranium is naturally occurring in groundwater used for drinking; however, health risks from naturally occurring concentrations are uncertain. Uranium can cause both radiological and chemical toxicity following ingestion. Bladder and kidneys receive a dose when uranium is excreted into the urine. Investigate the association between uranium in drinking water and bladder cancer risk in a case-control study. A population-based bladder cancer case-control study was conducted in 11 counties of southeastern Michigan. A total of 411 cases and 566 controls provided drinking water and toenail samples an

Drinking Water Uranium and Potential Health Effects in the German Federal State of Bavaria.

Mainly due to its nephrotoxic and osteotoxic potential, uranium (U) increasingly finds itself in the spotlight of environmental and health-related research. Germany decided on a binding U guideline value in drinking water of 10 µg/L, valid since 2011. It is yet widely unknown if and how public health was affected by elevated U concentrations before that. In this ecological study we summarized available drinking water U data for the German federal state of Bavaria (703 analyses in total for 553 different municipalities) at county level (for 76 out of 96 Bavarian counties, representing about 83%

The possible contribution of 129I in the drinking water and food supply to the nodular formation of thyroid tissue.

Nodular formation of the thyroid tissue can occur as a result of exposure to radiation. The nodular goiter is a common disease seen in the city of Elazig and its surroundings, in the eastern part of Turkey. A prospective study was conducted in an effort to identify the role of 129I in drinking water supply. Specimens obtained from nodular and normal thyroid tissue during surgery and also water specimens were counted by nuclear spectrometric system. 129I radioactivity in nodular tissue was noted to be higher compared to normal tissue and the difference was statistically significant (p <0.05). Health effects of uranium: new research findings.

Recent plans for a nuclear renaissance in both established and emerging economies have prompted increased interest in uranium mining. With the potential for more uranium mining worldwide and a growth in the literature on the toxicology and epidemiology of uranium and uranium mining, we found it timely to review the current state of knowledge. Here, we present a review of the health effects of uranium mining, with an emphasis on newer findings (2005-2011). Uranium mining can contaminate air, water, and soil. The chemical toxicity of the metal constitutes the primary environmental health hazard,

Drinking water and cancer.

Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between contaminants in drinking water and cancer is reviewed. The reviewed studies cover exposure to: disinfection byproducts; nitrate; arsenic and other metals; volatiles and contaminants from hazardous waste sites; asbestiform fibers; radionuclides; and fluoride. Most investigations are ecologic, with some confirmation of elevated risk from individual-based studies. In the case of waterborne arsenic, and possibly chlorination byproducts, there is a consistent but small body of epidemiologic evidence of an association with one or more types of cancer. N

A new AgTe0.08S1.67 QDs-based fluorescence sensing platform for rapidly detect UO22+ in water environment.

BACKGROUND: Uranium is a vital element in energy and military applications but poses significant environmental and health risks due to its toxicity, radioactivity, and long half-life. During its use, uranium waste is released into the environment, often in the form of uranyl ions (UO22+)-the most stable and water-soluble uranium species. These ions can contaminate water sources, threatening both ecosystem safety and human health. Thus, developing rapid and sensitive methods for detecting UO22+ in aquatic environments is crucial for ensuring water security and public health. RESULTS: In this s

Europium (III) and Uranium (VI) complexation by natural organic matter (NOM): Effect of source.

For the safe long-term storage of high-level radioactive waste (HLW), detailed information about geo-chemical behavior of radioactive and toxic metal ions under environmental conditions is important. Natural organic matter (NOM) can play a crucial role in the immobilization or mobilization of these metal ions due to its complexation and colloid formation tendency. In this study, the complexation of europium (as chemical homologue of trivalent actinides such as americium) and uranium (as main component of HLW) by ten humic acids (HA) from different sources and Suwannee NOM river extract has bee
