A Case Report of Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Oedema After an Ironman.

Exercise-induced pulmonary oedema (EIPO) is a rare and poorly understood condition, most commonly reported in patients participating in swimming-based endurance events. We report a 47-year-old male who developed acute dyspnoea and a cough during the cycling segment of an Ironman triathlon post swimming stage. The patient completed the race with his symptoms, and post-race assessment revealed hypoxia, prompting transfer to the local emergency department. Chest imaging showed acute pulmonary oedema. The patient was treated with furosemide and made a full recovery. EIPO is relatively uncommon in

Effects of induced alkalosis on simulated match performance in elite female water polo players.

This study investigated the effects of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion on simulated water polo match performance. Twelve elite players from the Australian National Women's Water Polo Squad (age 23.7 +/- 3.0 yr, height 1.73 +/- 0.05 m, body mass 75.7 +/- 8.0 kg) participated in the study. In a randomized cross-over double-blind design, players ingested 0.3 g/kg of NaHCO3 or placebo 90 min before performing a 59-min match-simulation test (MST) that included 56 x 10-m maximal-sprint swims as the performance measure. Capillary blood samples were obtained preingestion, pre- and post-warm-up,

Water related ocular diseases.

A number of ocular diseases can be attributed to contaminated water and we have coined a term "Water-related ocular diseases (WRODs)" to denote this wide-spectrum of conditions. WRODs are directly related to human contact with water and can occur through toxic, allergic, inflammatory or infective mechanisms. The non-infective causes can include chemicals used to clean swimming pools, oil spills and water-sport related injuries. Similarly, a number of infective organisms causing ocular diseases are transmitted through water. Since, these conditions can occasionally prove devastating, a review w

Considerations for ultra-endurance activities: part 2 - hydration.

It is not unusual for those participating in ultra-endurance (> 4 hr) events to develop varying degrees of either hypohydration or hyperhydration. Yet, it is important for ultra-endurance athletes to avoid the performance limiting and potentially fatal consequences of these conditions. During short periods of exercise (< 1 hr), trivial effects on the relationship between body mass change and hydration status result from body mass loss due to oxidation of endogenous fuel stores, and water supporting the intravascular volume being generated from endogenous fuel oxidation and released with glycog

Vaccination coverage among adolescent athletes: Patterns, gaps, and implications for sports medicine.

Physical activity is fundamental for health. However, it could expose even young and healthy individuals to infections which can be prevented through vaccinations. We aimed to evaluate the vaccination status in a population of adolescent athletes, to identify possible sex-related differences, and the role of comorbidities on the immunization of athletes. We applied a questionnaire-based survey, carried out among competitive adolescent athletes undergoing medical checkups. The coverage rate is over 98% for MMR vaccination, 13.4% for influenza vaccination, and 8.7% for Men B vaccination. Age was

Hyperthermia and Exertional Heatstroke During Running, Cycling, Open Water Swimming, and Triathlon Events.

Few previous epidemiological studies, sports medicine position statements, and expert panel consensus reports have evaluated the similarities and differences of hyperthermia and exertional heatstroke (EHS) during endurance running, cycling, open water swimming, and triathlon competitions. Accordingly, we conducted manual online searches of the PubMed and Google Scholar databases using pre-defined inclusion criteria. The initial manual screenings of 1192 article titles and abstracts, and subsequent reviews of full-length pdf versions identified 80 articles that were acceptable for inclusion. Th

Association of Co-Living and Age on the Type of Sports Practiced by Older People.

Introdution: The environment and the type of co-living of older people are crucial to understanding how the nature of their context influences a healthy lifestyle. However, no studies have investigated to what extent their type of co-living may be associated with the sports and the profile practice according to their age. Objective: This study aimed to assess the association between the types of co-living and the age of the physically active elderly and the sports they practice. Hypothesis: It is thought that the age, situation, and satisfaction with the way of living in physically active olde

An outbreak of leptospirosis among kayakers in Brittany, North-West France, 2016.

In September 2016, a cluster of seven kayakers with clinical symptoms of leptospirosis with onset since July 2016 was reported to French health authorities. Human and animal investigations were undertaken to describe the outbreak, identify the likely place and source of infection and implement necessary control measures. We identified 103 patients with clinical symptoms of leptospirosis between 1 June and 31 October 2016 who lived in the Ille-et-Vilaine district in Brittany. Of these, 14 (including the original seven) reported contacts with the river Vilaine during the incubation period and we

Leptospirosis mimicking hemolytic uremic syndrome: a case report.

Leptospirosis was diagnosed in a child presenting with acute kidney injury, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Initial symptoms included abdominal pain and nonbloody diarrhea, followed by fever, vomiting, and skin rash. Leptospirosis was suspected and eventually confirmed. Although leptospirosis is uncommon in temperate climates, it is occurring in increasing numbers of participants in water sports, making it a consideration in the differential diagnosis of hemolytic uremic syndrome.

[Physical education for spina bifida children in special schools for the physically handicapped (primary school)].

With a rate of 0.5-1/1,000 of the total number of births in West Germany, spina bifida is next to cerebral paresis one of the most frequent congenital defects. Altogether, fifty places in special schools are needed per one million of inhabitants for spina bifida children. The loss of physical unctions is comparable to that in the case of paraplegia. The variety of medical and psychological problems makes the cooperation of highly different branches of study indispensible in a rehabilitation team (neurosurgeon, neuropediatrician, urologist, orthopaedist, pediatrician, educator, social worker, p

National Athletic Trainers' Association Position Statement: Fluid Replacement for the Physically Active.

OBJECTIVE: To present evidence-based recommendations that promote optimized fluid-maintenance practices for physically active individuals. BACKGROUND: Both a lack of adequate fluid replacement (hypohydration) and excessive intake (hyperhydration) can compromise athletic performance and increase health risks. Athletes need access to water to prevent hypohydration during physical activity but must be aware of the risks of overdrinking and hyponatremia. Drinking behavior can be modified by education, accessibility, experience, and palatability. This statement updates practical recommendations re

Association of Bone Mineral Measurements With Peak Impact and Sport-Specific Muscle Loads in Elite Youth Artistic Swimmers.

PURPOSE: Bone mineral measurements and their association with peak impact and sport-specific, persistent muscle loads were examined in 10 elite artistic swimmers age 15-19 years. METHODS: Bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of total body, total body less head, spine, and dominant and nondominant limbs were assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Peak ground-reaction forces of 2 dry jumps (countermovement jump and frog jump) were measured on a force plate. Peak forces applied during in-water exercises (vertical scull, barracuda push, and kick pull) were measured. R

Surfer's neurapraxia - an uncommon surfing injury of the saphenous nerve.

Surfer's neurapraxia is a rare surfing injury of the saphenous nerve secondary to persistent compression of the saphenous nerve along the medial thigh by the surfboard when paddling prone and while sitting upright on the board waiting for a wave. Symptoms may be nonspecific and consist of pain in the medial thigh with or without radiation along the saphenous nerve distribution (medial leg, medial ankle, medial arch of the foot). The saphenous nerve tension test can be utilized to reproduce the symptoms of surfer's neurapraxia. Treatment consists of conservative management while refractory case

The physiological response to cold-water immersion following a mixed martial arts training session.

Combative sport is one of the most physically intense forms of exercise, yet the effect of recovery interventions has been largely unexplored. We investigated the effect of cold-water immersion on structural, inflammatory, and physiological stress biomarkers following a mixed martial arts (MMA) contest preparation training session in comparison with passive recovery. Semiprofessional MMA competitors (n = 15) were randomly assigned to a cold-water immersion (15 min at 10 °C) or passive recovery protocol (ambient air) completed immediately following a contest preparation training session. Marker

Evaluating head and neck trauma in surfing: injuries and prevention in an olympic sport.

BACKGROUND: Surfing's Olympic inclusion has spotlighted it as an internationally popular, high-impact sport with risks of neurosurgical-relevant trauma. However, research on these injuries remains sparse and heterogenous and no synthesis has mapped this literature. All athletic levels of surfers face unique biomechanical forces from wave impacts, board collisions, and seafloor contact, which results in a significant, yet under-quantified, neurotrauma prevalence. Despite parallels with other action sports, surfing-specific epidemiology, helmet efficacy, and standardized return-to-play guideline

Clinical management of acute low back pain in elite and subelite rowers: a Delphi study of experienced and expert clinicians.

OBJECTIVES: Rowing-related low back pain (LBP) is common but published management research is lacking. This study aims to establish assessment and management behaviours and beliefs of experienced and expert clinicians when elite and subelite rowers present with an acute episode of LBP; second, to investigate how management differs for developing and masters rowers. This original research is intended to be used to develop rowing-related LBP management guidelines. METHODS: A three-round Delphi survey was used. Experienced clinicians participated in an internet-based survey (round 1), answering

The importance of salt in the athlete's diet.

Salt consists of sodium and chloride, and is important for normal physiologic function. High sweat rates in athletes result in loss of both fluids and sodium. Fluid replacement with hypotonic solutions will lead to incomplete rehydration and possible complications such as hyponatremia, decreased performance, heat cramps, or other heat-related illness. There is significant individual variation in sodium loss during activity. In some the losses can be replaced by normal dietary intake, whereas in others the losses can be dramatic and increased dietary intake is essential. There are various metho

The effects of a land-based warm-up and accompanying passive heat retention on core body temperature, hormones, and subsequent performance in elite surfers.

Surfing is a high participation sport, yet little sport science research exists regarding competitive performance in surfing. Given surfing's inclusion as an Olympic sport from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics onwards, an examination of performance would seem useful. In numerous land-based sports, and in swimming, the importance of a warm-up and muscle heat is well documented. However, surfing is a unique sport in that it is undertaken both above and below water. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of a warm-up in terms of readiness to perform in surfing. We discuss this i
