Microbial Community Structure and Diversity in Drinking Water Supply, Distribution Systems as well as Household Point of Use Sites in Addis Ababa City, Ethiopia.

Understanding ecology of microbiomes in drinking water distribution systems is the most important notion in delivering safe drinking water. Drinking water distribution systems harbor various microbiota despite efforts made in improving water infrastructures in the water industry, especially, in developing countries. Intermittent water supply, long time of water storage, low water pressure, and contaminated source water are among many of the factors responsible for poor drinking water quality affecting health of people. The aim of this study was to explore microbial diversity and structure in w

Enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal in landscape water using polymeric ferric sulfate as well as the synergistic effect of four kinds of natural rocks as promoter.

Eutrophication in lakes and rivers caused by the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is urgent since the accumulation of N and P can possibly cause the algal blooms and devastation to the water ecological system. The removal of N and P in the landscape water would be an efficient way to reduce the enrichment of nutrition before they reach the large water system. The N and P removal efficiency of PFS as well as the synergistic effect of natural rocks (four types of purple parent rock (J3p, J2s, T1f, and J3s)) as promoter was examined under laboratory conditions. The results indicated that TN and TP

Magnitude of arsenic toxicity in tube-well drinking water in Bangladesh and its adverse effects on human health including cancer: evidence from a review of the literature.

Only after a decade from 1993, arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh has been reported as the biggest arsenic catastrophe in the world. It is a burning public health issue in this country. More than 50 percent of the total population is estimated at risk of contamination. Already thousands of people have been affected by the disease arsenicosis. Many more may be on the way to manifest lesions in future. We conducted a review of previous studies and published articles including MEDLINE database on this issue. We found that 59 districts out of 64 have been already affected by arseni

Exposure to radon gas in groundwater in southwest Angola (Lubango-Huíla): Implications of geology and climate change.

In southern African countries most of the population uses groundwater collected in dug wells for domestic consumption instead of water from public distribution systems. To investigate the impact of natural and human factors on urban groundwater quality, 276 samples were collected in the Lubango region (Angola) in water distribution systems and dug wells ranging from a few meters to almost one hundred meters in depth. Radon concentrations (RC) were determined by liquid scintillation counting according to ISO 13164-4:2015. Geology is the main source of the variability of RC, with median values h

Two-and-a-Half-Year Follow-Up Study with Freedom on Water through Stand-Up Paddling: Exploring Experiences in Blue Spaces and Their Long-Term Impact on Mental Well-Being.

Blue space interventions evidently have a positive impact on well-being and mental health, yet longitudinal studies on the lasting impact of such interventions are scarce. In this qualitative follow-up study with semi-structured interviews, we explored the long-term experiences over 18-42 months among six out of the initial eight women from the primary study, also including two instructors from the initial study. The participants, dealing with mental disorders, participated in the group-based intervention Freedom on Water, participating in stand-up paddling. Five main themes emerged from the e

Assessment of Microbial Community Dynamics in River Bank Filtrate Using High-Throughput Sequencing and Flow Cytometry.

Surface-groundwater interactions play an important role in microbial community compositions of river bank filtrates. Surface water contaminations deriving from environmental influences are attenuated by biogeochemical processes in the hyporheic zone, which are essential for providing clean and high-quality drinking water in abstraction wells. Characterizing the flow regime of surface water into the groundwater body can provide substantial information on water quality, but complex hydraulic dynamics make predictions difficult. Thus, a bottom up approach using microbial community shifting patter

Evaluation of pot-chlorination of wells during a cholera outbreak, Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, 2008.

We evaluated the ability of UNICEF-designed pot-chlorinators to achieve recommended free residual chlorine (FRC) levels in well water in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, during a cholera outbreak. Thirty wells were randomly selected from six neighbourhoods. Pot-chlorinators--perforated plastic bottles filled with gravel, sand and calcium hypochlorite granules--were placed in each well. FRC was measured before and 24, 48 and 72 h after placement and compared with World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended levels of 21 mg L(-1) for well water during cholera outbreaks and 0.2-5 mg L 1 in non-outbreak sett

Use of a funnel trap for collecting immature Aedes aegypti and copepods from deep wells in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

During the course of a "dry" season dengue vector survey, indoor and outdoor household wells were sampled for the possible presence of immature mosquitoes and copepods. With a simple floating funnel trap, Aedes aegypti immature stages were captured in over 33% of the sampled wells (n = 93) during a 24-h trapping period per well. Average number of larvae (all instars) per positive well was 8.8 (range 1-63). Positive wells varied in depth from 2.7 to 14.7 m (8.8-48.2 ft), with a mean of 7.9 +/-SE 0.5 m in well rim to water surface. Only 4 wells (4.3%) contained Culex quinquefasciatus larvae. Onl

Microbial community structure in deep natural gas-bearing aquifers subjected to sulfate-containing fluid injection.

In the natural gas field located in central Japan, high concentrations of natural gases and iodide ions are dissolved in formation water and commercially produced in deep aquifers. In the iodine recovery process, the produced formation water is amended with sulfate, and this fluid is injected into gas-bearing aquifers, which may lead to infrastructure corrosion by hydrogen sulfide. In this study, we examined the microbial community in aquifers subjected to sulfate-containing fluid injection. Formation water samples were collected from production wells located at different distances from the in

[Effects of soil and ground water pollution with perchloroethylene from the public health service viewpoint].

A routine analysis of drinking water conducted in September 1987 in a Rhenish water works revealed a perchloroethylene (PER) content of 3 micrograms/l. Within less than 3 months the concentration in the two northern wells of the entire battery consisting of 4 wells rose to 20 micrograms/l, and hence the complete battery had to be shut off from the water supply network. The pumped-up water was diverted to a draining plant via the precipitation tank of the water works. During the two subsequent months the PER concentration continued to rise, especially in well No. 1, to more than 120 micrograms/

Drinking Water Quality and Provision in Six Low-Income, Peri-Urban Communities of Lusaka, Zambia.

Lusaka, Zambia, is a rapidly growing city located on a vulnerable karstic dolomite aquifer that provides most of the city's drinking water. Over 65% of residents live in peri-urban communities with inadequate sanitation leading to widespread groundwater contamination and the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. To fill the water service gap, Water Trusts were created: public/private partnerships designed to provide clean water to peri-urban community residents. Water Trusts extract groundwater via boreholes, treat it with chlorine, and distribute it to residents via public kiosks. We

Biodegradation of PCE and TCE in landfill leachate predicted from concentrations of molecular hydrogen: a case study.

The Refuse Hideaway Landfill (23-acre) received municipal, commercial, and industrial waste between 1974 and 1988. It was designed as a "natural attenuation" landfill and no provision was made to collect and treat contaminated water. Natural biological degradation through sequential reductive dechlorination had been an important mechanism for natural attenuation at the site. We used the concentration of hydrogen to forecast whether reductive dechlorination would continue over time at particular locations in the plume. Based on published literature, reductive dechlorination and natural attenuat

Susceptibility of residential wells to VOC and nitrate contamination.

Water quality of residential wells is vital to public health and a complex issue for regulatory agencies. South Carolina, a typical southeastern rural state, has no required testing of residential well water quality after initial well construction. This study used site-selection criteria to identify susceptible residential wells based on a combination of geologic vulnerability and potential contaminant loading. Geologic vulnerability was defined as increased probability of contaminants being transported from the land surface into the groundwater based on geological properties. As a surrogate f
