Forty six patients affected by senile dementia of the Alzheimer type and 20 control subjects of similar age, sex and educational level have been studied, using a quantified neuropsychological battery (Wechsler memory scale, Raven progressive matrices and quantified tests for aphasia, apraxia and agnosia). There was a significant correlation between the scores of all cognitive functions with one another and with the Mini Mental State. The results show a rather global impairment of cognitive functions in these patients and suggest that intellectual impairment progresses as a continuum in senile

BACKGROUND: Bilateral regional brain oxygen saturation (rSO2) trends, reflecting intraoperative brain oxygen imbalance, could warn of brain dysfunction. Various types of cognitive impairment, such as memory decline, alterations in executive function or subjective complaints, have been described three months after surgery. Our aim was to explore the potential utility of rSO2 values as a warning sign for the development of different types of decline in postoperative psychological function.
METHODS: Observational post-hoc analysis of data for the patient sample (n = 125) of a previously conducte

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor and nonmotor dysfunctions, which include sleep disturbances. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is associated with numerous physiologic changes such as memory consolidation. Compelling evidence suggests that nitric oxide (NO) is crucial to both sleep regulation and memory consolidation. In our study, we explored changes in biologic molecules during various sleep stages and the effects of sleep on memory consolidation in PD.
METHODS: Ten PD patients and 14 volunteers without PD participated in our study. The g

The 22q11 deletion syndrome (DS) is a common genetic disorder, and a Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) is considered as a predominant part of the phenotype. The focus of our study was to investigate the role of learning in this NLD characteristic. We compared results of children and adolescents with 22q11 DS; with non-syndromal NLD and with memory disorders on multi-trial verbal and nonverbal learning tests. Better verbal and worse nonverbal IQs were significantly discrepant for the 22q11 DS sample and for the NLD sample; the memory sample had a FS-IQ in the normal range with lower verbal IQ.

OBJECTIVES: Diet-derived bioactive lipids may help maintain cognitive resilience during the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Konjac-derived glucosylceramide (kGlcCer), traditionally used for skin barrier support, has previously been shown to reduce brain amyloid accumulation in individuals with lower baseline amyloid burden. However, earlier studies used cognitive tests with limited sensitivity. The objective of this study was to investigate whether daily intake of kGlcCer improves cognitive performance and influences amyloid-related biomarkers in cognitively unimpaired older adu

BACKGROUND: Structural alterations of the lateral temporal cortex (LTC) in association with memory impairments have been reported in schizophrenia. This study investigated whether alterations of LTC structure were linked with impaired facial and/or verbal memory in young first-degree relatives of people with schizophrenia and, thus, may be indicators of vulnerability to the illness.
METHODS: Subjects included 27 non-psychotic, first-degree relatives of schizophrenia patients, and 48 healthy controls, between the ages of 13 and 28. Participants underwent high-resolution magnetic resonance imag

This group study of 24 amnesic patients and 40 control subjects examined the hypothesis that retrograde memory deficits result from a combination of two impairment mechanisms: (1) a deficit in the retrieval of contents that is related to dysfunctioning of the hippocampal anterograde memory system, and (2) a deficit in the storage and/or retrieval of contents that is related to concomitant neocortical lesions. Retrograde amnesia was evaluated with the use of new Famous Persons and Autobiographical Memory Tests. The postulated components of retrograde memory impairment were assessed using the We

A case of right temporo-occipital subcortical hemorrhage with amnestic syndrome was reported. A 65-year-old woman presented with visual disturbance and headache. CT and MRI demonstrated a hemorrhagic lesion in the right occipital lobe involving parahippocampal gyrus. Neurological examination on admission revealed left homonymous hemianopsia and anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Neuropsychological examination revealed marked recent memory disturbance, but she had visual retention and verbal retention, and her value in WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) was normal. After 40 days, she was

Twenty children with spina bifida and twenty controls were assessed on a battery of visuospatial working memory tests. Children with spina bifida performed as well as the control group in the visuospatial test and in the forward and backward versions of the Corsi test, but were impaired in the 'House Visual Span.' This test, designed in our lab, provides specific information regarding visual ability to discriminate between pictorial targets and lures, and requires specific visual processing of stimuli. These results are discussed in terms of working memory models and are viewed as supporting t

The case of a 61 year old patient with Pick's disease involving predominantly the left temporal lobe, who has been studied over a 5 year period, is reported. She presented with a grave impairment of both verbal and non-verbal memory functions. Her non-verbal memory deficits included profound impairments on the recognition of unfamiliar faces and the recall of abstract designs. Remarkably, her visual recognition memory performance for unknown buildings, landscapes, and outdoor scenes was preserved. Strikingly, her ability to recall familiar routes and learn new ones through a complex virtual re

Digit repetition was investigated in samples of unilaterally (N = 87) and bilaterally (N = 75) brain-damaged adults. The study was designed to investigate the hemispheric and neuropsychological factors that underlie performance on these two dissimilar tasks. Digit repetition was disproportionately depressed in such patients, especially those with left hemisphere lesions. The incidence of individually impaired digit repetition performance, especially of digits backward, was significantly higher than in normals, again particularly within the left hemisphere sample. However, impaired digit repeti

OBJECTIVE: Interictal cognitive disturbances are frequent in patients with focal epilepsies and the links with alteration of resting state brain oscillations are not well known. Changes in theta oscillations, may contribute to cognitive impairment. This study aimed to investigate whether changes in theta activity are related to cognitive disturbances.
METHODS: Retrospective data of 23 patients with temporal/frontal lobe epilepsy were included. Theta connectivity, power and interictal spikes rate from five-minute interictal resting state stereoelectroencephalography datasets were computed. Cog

Psychopathic traits are associated with impaired emotional processing. The present study examines the potential association between psychopathic traits and memory for emotional stimuli. Although a significant body of research suggests that memory is heightened for emotional stimuli, it is unclear how psychopathic traits may disrupt this process. Eighty-two male jail inmates completed an emotional memory task as well as portions of a standardised memory assessment. Psychopathic traits were not associated with the ability to freely recall images of positive, negative or neutral valence that part
