Does childhood overweight, parental perception of overweight, or family history of diabetes mellitus increase parental perception of type 2 diabetes risk for their child?

AIM: To evaluate factors that influence parental perception of diabetes mellitus risk for their child. METHOD: Self-administered survey of parents in a managed care plan. RESULTS: Child overweight status, family history of type 2 diabetes, and accurate parental perception of their child's overweight status were independent predictors of parental worry about diabetes and perception of greater diabetes risk for their child. CONCLUSIONS: Accurate parental perception of their child's weight status and a family history of type 2 diabetes may serve as useful motivators in the clinical setting for

Developing a Measure for the Accuracy of Symptom Perception: The Congruence Between Self-reported Dyspnea and Physiological Parameters in the Dutch Lifelines Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess whether a symptom perception accuracy measure can be derived from routinely collected general population cohort data. METHODS: We combined information on self-reported dyspnea and physiological parameters (FEV1%pred, body weight) from the Lifelines Cohort Study ( N =138,594; 59.0% female; mean age=42.3 years [SD=11.0]) to obtain a symptom perception accuracy measure. Dyspnea was operationalized via the SCL-90 SOM subscale item. Using principal component analysis of available psychosocial variables known to correlate with symptom perception, we derived 3 compound

Leveraging Tendon Vibration to Enhance Pseudo-Haptic Perceptions in VR.

Pseudo-haptic techniques are used to modify haptic perception by appropriately changing visual feedback to body movements. Based on the knowledge that tendon vibration can affect our somatosensory perception, this article proposes a method for leveraging tendon vibration to enhance pseudo-haptics during free arm motion. Three experiments were performed to examine the impact of tendon vibration on the range and resolution of pseudo-haptics. The first experiment investigated the effect of tendon vibration on the detection threshold of the discrepancy between visual and physical motion. The resul

Anorexia nervosa and the size-weight illusion: No evidence of impaired visual-haptic object integration.

Body image disorders in anorexia nervosa (AN) patients and recovered AN (RAN) patients have been suggested to stem from aberrant integration of sensory information. Previous research by Case et al. (2012) used the size-weight illusion (SWI) to study multisensory integration in AN. Their results showed a diminished SWI in AN patients, which they interpreted as evidence of decreased integration of visual and proprioceptive information. However, their method did not distinguish between visual and haptic size information, which was presented concurrently while making weight judgements. Therefore,

Concordance between measured and self-perceived weight status of persons with serious mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated concordance between self-perceived and measured weight status for persons with serious mental illness. METHODS: A total of 586 mental health clients assessed their weight as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. The agreement between these self-assessments and the same categories based on measured body mass index was related to gender, ethnicity, education, age, and psychiatric diagnosis. RESULTS: Three hundred consumers (51%) underestimated their weight (they thought they weighed less than they did); only 35 (6%) overestimated it. In logistic regressi

Relationships between obesity, functional exercise capacity, physical activity participation and physical self-perception in people with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared differences in functional exercise capacity between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. Physical self-perception and physical activity variables contributing to the variability in the distance achieved during a walk test were identified. METHOD: A total of 25 normal weight, 25 overweight and 10 obese patients and 40 healthy volunteers were included. Functional exercise capacity was explored with a 6-minute walk test. Level of physical activity was assessed using the Baecke questionnaire and physical self-perception using the physical self-perceptio

A novel computational approach to pain perception modelling within a Bayesian framework using quantitative sensory testing.

Pain perception can be studied as an inferential process in which prior information influences the perception of nociceptive input. To date, there are no suitable psychophysical paradigms to measure this at an individual level. We developed a quantitative sensory testing paradigm allowing for quantification of the influence of prior expectations versus current nociceptive input during perception. Using a Pavlovian-learning task, we investigated the influence of prior expectations on the belief about the varying strength of association between a painful electrical cutaneous stimulus and a visua

Celastrol Improves Preference for a Fatty Acid, and Taste Bud and Systemic Inflammation in Diet-Induced Obese Mice.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is associated with the altered gustatory perception of dietary fatty acids. Celastrol, a triterpene, has been demonstrated to exert anti-obesity effects in rodents. We assessed the role of Celastrol in the modulation of the oro-sensory perception of lipids in control and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. METHODS: Male mice of the C57B/6J strain were fed a HFD for 11 weeks and then were administered or not with Celastrol further for 4 weeks. The body weight was recorded weekly. Before the sacrifice, the animals were subjected to oro-sensory detection of a dietary long

Are Prolactin Levels Linked to Suction Pressure?

BACKGROUND: Suction pressure has been reported to be a key driving force of lactation. An infant's sucking at its mother's breasts is the major stimulus to post-natal prolactin (PRL) secretion, and PRL is the essential hormone for lactation and milk production. It is unknown what role suction pressure has in PRL secretion and milk supply postnatally. OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationship between the suction pressure, PRL level, lactation, and milk supply in breastfeeding mother-infant dyads. METHODS: Healthy women with normal full-term infants were enrolled (n = 122). Data collection inclu

Visual processing in adolescents born extremely low birth weight and/or extremely preterm.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ocular growth and development differs between preterm and term-born infants and may cause long-term negative consequences for visual function, but contemporary data on long-term visual outcomes in representative samples of the highest risk extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1000 g birth weight) or extremely preterm (EP, <28 weeks' gestation) survivors are lacking. Our objective was to compare visual functioning between ELBW/EP and normal birth weight (NBW, >2499 g birth weight) control adolescents. METHODS: Geographically determined cohort study of 228 consecutive E

Appearance changes associated with participation in a behavioral weight control program.

Relationships among objectively-measured weight changes, perceived changes in weight, and perceived changes in attractiveness of participants in a behavioral weight control program were examined. Participants in the program were weighed and photographed before and after treatment and at a six-month follow-up session. These photographs were then rated on the dimensions of perceived weight and perceived attractiveness by the same participants, who were kept blind to the times at which the photographs were taken. Correlational analyses indicated that there was little correspondence between object

Subtle to significant: Enhancing heaviness perception with stochastic resonance.

Dynamic touch allows individuals to perceive object properties such as weight and length through movement-based exploration. This study examined how subthreshold vibrotactile stimulation influences heaviness perception by leveraging the principles of stochastic resonance, which suggests that adding structured noise can enhance weak sensory signals. Specifically, we tested whether pink-noise stimulation (which mimics natural movement variability) improves perceptual accuracy more effectively than white noise or no stimulation. Ten participants completed wielding tasks while blindfolded, estimat

Patient perception of obesity versus physician documentation of obesity: A quality improvement study.

As the prevalence of obesity increases, the prevalence of associated comorbid diseases, obesity-related mortality rates and healthcare costs rise concordantly. Two main factors that hinder efforts to treat obesity include a lack of recognition by patients and documentation by physicians. This study evaluates the relationship between patient perception of obese weight and physician documentation of obesity. This quality improvement observational study surveyed patients of an academic internal medicine clinic on their perception of obesity. Responses were compared to longitudinal physician docum

Brain response to food odors is not associated with body mass index and obesity-related metabolic health measures.

Smell perception plays a role in eating behavior and might be involved in the development of obesity. In fact, olfactory function is impaired in obesity and might depend on metabolic health factors. To date, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigate neural processing of food-related odors in normal-weight, overweight and obese individuals. Fifty-three young and healthy participants (28.8 ± 4.4 years, 27 female; 24 normal-weight, 10 overweight, and 19 obese) were presented with high- (chocolate, potato chips) and low-caloric (orange, cucumber) food odors during a fun

Increasing Obesity in Treated Female HIV Patients from Sub-Saharan Africa: Potential Causes and Possible Targets for Intervention.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate changing nutritional demographics of treated HIV-1-infected patients and explore causes of obesity, particularly in women of African origin. METHODS: We prospectively reviewed nutritional demographics of clinic attenders at an urban European HIV clinic during four one-month periods at three-yearly intervals (2001, 2004, 2007, and 2010) and in two consecutive whole-year reviews (2010-2011 and 2011-2012). Risk-factors for obesity were assessed by multiple linear regression. A sub-study of 50 HIV-positive African female patients investigated body-size/shape perception

Obesity is associated with reduced sensitivity to stimulus rewarding value, but unaltered effects of fasting and contextual modulation during action prediction.

Previous studies have shown that our perception of others' actions is influenced by both the reward value of target objects and our internal motivational state. In the present study, we investigated how the energy content of the target object and the physiological state of hunger influence the prediction of food-oriented actions in people with a healthy weight or obesity. Thirty-one participants with normal-weight and 31 participants with obesity performed a social perception task in which, under a fasting or a satiety state, they had to predict the intention of actions directed to high- or lo
