A scalable, virtual weight management program tailored for adults with type 2 diabetes: effects on glycemic control.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to test the efficacy of a scalable, virtually delivered, diabetes-tailored weight management program on glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: This was a single arm, three-site clinical trial. Participants had baseline HbA1c between 7-11% and BMI between 27-50 kg/m2. Primary outcome was change in HbA1c at 24 weeks. Secondary outcomes were changes in body weight, waist circumference, the Diabetes Distress Scale (DDS), quality of life (IWQOL-L), and hunger (VAS). Generalized linear effects models were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS

Veterans with PTSD report more weight loss barriers than Veterans with no mental health disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study characterized and compared Veterans of the United States Armed Forces with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to Veterans with no mental health disorders on self-reported measures of factors that influence success in weight management programs. METHOD: We examined the relation of PTSD diagnosis with weight loss plan, reasons for overweight/obesity and barriers to dieting and physical exercise among 171,884 Veterans. Statistically significant variables in chi-square tests (P<.05) with at least a small effect size were then compared via multivariate logistic regression a

Filling the intervention gap: service evaluation of an intensive nonsurgical weight management programme for severe and complex obesity.

BACKGROUND: Weight management including formula total diet replacement (TDR) is emerging as an effective intervention for severe and complex obesity, particularly with respect to type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, no prospective audit and service evaluation of such programmes have been reported. METHODS: Following initial feasibility piloting, the Counterweight-Plus programme was commissioned across a variety of healthcare providers. The programme includes: Screening, TDR (formula low energy diet), food reintroduction and weight loss maintenance, all delivered by staff with 8 h of training, in-

Effects of Weight Loss and Weight Maintenance on Lipoprotein Insulin Resistance Scores in Adults with Overweight and Obesity.

Background: An elevated lipoprotein insulin resistance (LP-IR) score corresponds to insulin resistance in adults with overweight and obesity, yet data are lacking regarding the impact of exercise interventions on LP-IR. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to evaluate the effects of a weight loss and weight maintenance intervention on LP-IR score in adults with overweight and obesity. Methods: Thirty sedentary adults with overweight and obesity completed a 10-week OPTIFAST® weight loss program with supervised aerobic exercise to achieve clinical weight loss (CWL) (≥7% from baseline). BEhavioural Weight Management: COMponents of Effectiveness (BE:COME) Synopsis.

BACKGROUND: Behavioural weight management interventions are the main treatment for obesity in the United Kingdom; however, there are limitations in the published evidence on their effectiveness which in turn affects the available guidance. This research aims to determine which individual components of behavioural weight management programmes are associated with greater attendance, intervention completion and weight loss. OBJECTIVE(S): To map individual components of behavioural weight management interventions. To analyse individual participant data using network meta-analyses at the level of

Recruiting low-income postpartum women into two weight loss interventions: in-person versus Facebook delivery.

Several studies, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), have provided foundational evidence for the efficacy of lifestyle interventions on weight loss and cardiometabolic prevention. However, translating these interventions to real-world settings and engaging at-risk populations has proven difficult. Social media-delivered interventions have high potential for reaching high-risk populations, but there remains a need to understand the extent to which these groups are interested in social media as a delivery mode. One potential way to this is by examining recruitment rates as a proxy for

From community pharmacy to healthy living pharmacy: positive early experiences from Portsmouth, England.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown the potential for community pharmacies to promote better health and prevent disease by providing individual services in a limited range of settings. In the UK, the healthy living pharmacy (HLP) framework has been developed to allow pharmacies to provide a portfolio of such services tailored to local need. This paper reports an evaluation of the uptake and success of HLP introduction in Portsmouth, the original pathfinder site for a national program. OBJECTIVES: To assesses the impact on service provision and staff engagement at an early stage in HLP program deve

Infant Growth following Maternal Participation in a Gestational Weight Management Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is widespread and treatment strategies have demonstrated limited success. Changes to obstetrical practice in response to obesity may support obesity prevention by influencing offspring growth trajectories. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study examined growth among infants born to obese mothers who participated in Nutrition in Pregnancy (NIP), a prenatal nutrition intervention at one urban hospital. NIP participants had Medicaid insurance and BMIs of 30 kg/m(2) or greater. We compared NIP infant growth to a historical control cohort, matched on maternal factors: age, ra

Abdominal visceral fat reduction is associated with favorable changes of serum retinol binding protein-4 in nondiabetic subjects.

The adipocytokine retinol binding protein-4 (RBP4) has recently been shown to link obesity and insulin resistance, although their relationship remains controversial in human studies. The influence of weight reduction with changes of fat distribution on serum RBP4 concentration in nondiabetics is also unknown. We assessed the effect of weight reduction (especially abdominal visceral fat loss) on serum RBP4 levels after a structuralized weight-reduction program. We conducted a prospective intervention study consisting of a 16-week weight reduction program, including lifestyle modification and ad

[The role of motivational factors in the health promotion training programs for the overweight subjects].

BACKGROUND: The relevance of this ensues from the fact that despite the numerous currently available health promotion training programs for the reduction of body weight, there is still the need for the development of the new forms of the efficacious physical training programs and the methods of motivation for compliance with them among the people of different age, sex and social status. AIM: The objective of the present study was to determine the role of motivational factors, including the assessment of the biological age, in the improvement of the effectiveness of the health promotion traini

Does Weight Loss Translate to Workplace Gains? Results of an Employment Questionnaire in Adults With Prediabetes and Overweight or Obesity.

AIMS: Excess weight is associated with adverse health and economic disadvantage. Observational studies suggest that people with obesity are less likely to be employed and have lower income, potentially from workplace discrimination. This study examined whether weight loss achieved through a structured, dietitian-supported program improved financial outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An employment questionnaire was embedded within a clinical trial conducted between 2015 and 2019, investigating the effect of dietary supplements on metabolic health in otherwise healthy adults with prediabetes and

Differences and commonalities in barriers and facilitators experienced by participants enrolled in an online behavioral weight management program: A qualitative comparison.

Online behavioral weight management programs offer a scalable solution to address overweight and obesity but often face high dropout rates and variable success. Understanding the barriers and facilitators experienced by participants who achieve weight loss targets versus those who do not is critical for optimizing programs. This study compared the barriers and facilitators reported by participants achieving ≥5% weight loss with those achieving <5%, using a social-ecological framework to capture influences across individual, interpersonal, and environmental levels. The framework was chosen to r
