Formation of phosgene during welding activities in an atmosphere containing chlorinated hydrocarbons.

The formation of phosgene During welding activities in an atmosphere containing chlorinated hydrocarbons was investigated. Four different chlorinated hydrocarbons were studied under laboratory conditions. Results are presented as time-averaged phosgene concentration in a total volume of 250 L of air being purged through a 52-L reaction vessel during 20 min. It was found that the formation of phosgene was in the order dichloromethane < Freon-22 < carbon tetrachloride << trichoroethylene. Local concentrations may be higher depending on dispersion phenomena. The interpretation in terms of occupat

A comparison of cytotoxicity and oxidative stress from welding fumes generated with a new nickel-, copper-based consumable versus mild and stainless steel-based welding in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages.

Welding processes that generate fumes containing toxic metals, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), manganese (Mn), and nickel (Ni), have been implicated in lung injury, inflammation, and lung tumor promotion in animal models. While federal regulations have reduced permissible worker exposure limits to Cr(VI), this is not always practical considering that welders may work in confined spaces and exhaust ventilation may be ineffective. Thus, there has been a recent initiative to minimize the potentially hazardous components in welding materials by developing new consumables containing much less

Ultra-dense, laser-welded, multi-core fiber-optic interfaces.

The packing density of fiber-optic interfaces is ultimately limited by the cladding diameter. We investigate direct laser welding of multi-core fibers as a means for overcoming this limit in constructing arbitrary-pitch arrayed optical interfaces. We demonstrate that submicron-precision laser welding, previously shown for single-core fibers, can be used to construct multicore fiber interfaces while fully preserving the beam quality of each core. This report describes the application of the new technique to 4- and 7-core fibers and quantifies the resulting beam quality to confirm laser welding

Occupational exposure to metal welding and cataract: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Metal welding generates ultraviolet radiation (UVR) of cataractogenic wavelengths, and UVR emitted during welding has been associated with cataract formation, but results from prior studies are conflicting. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies addressing associations between occupational metal welding and cataract. The literature search was conducted on November 15, 2023, across seven literature databases. Studies comparing age-adjusted occurrence of cataract among welders and control groups were included. Two reviewers extracted d

Removal of a 'cold-welded' femoral head lag screw in a nail combination.

We present a case of a femoral head lag screw 'cold welded' to an intramedullary nail (IMN) in a female in her 20s during exchange femoral nailing of a subtrochanteric femoral osteotomy non-union. We subsequently developed a reverse spiral-fluted bolt extraction socket, designed to engage the outer wall of a bolt or screw. The lag screw was removed from the Smith and Nephew Meta-Tan IMN, 1 week later, and exchange nailing was successfully completed. This case report describes a technically challenging situation of a cold-welded femoral head lag screw during a complex revision. This report intr

Study on Microelectrochemical Inhomogeneity of an SA508-309L/308L Overlay Welded Joint.

The corrosion behavior of the dissimilar metal welded joint (DMWJ) is highly dependent on its heterogeneous microstructures. However, directly measuring the electrochemical properties of microstructures in different heat-affected zones (HAZs) is a formidable challenge, because traditional bulk electrochemistry can only offer an average signal. Herein, the microelectrochemical properties of an SA508-309L/308L DMWJ were measured in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution using lithography and capillary techniques. Specifically, high-throughput microelectrochemical tests, including open circuit potential (OCP), e

Microstructural and Performance Analysis of TP304H/T22 Dissimilar Steel Welded Joints.

In the power plant boiler industry, dissimilar steel welding is widely used in the connection of thermal power generation units. As an important component of the unit, research on the organizational properties of dissimilar steel welded joints has significant guidance for the life design of the joint. For the long-term service state of TP304H/T22 dissimilar steel welded joints, the microstructure's morphological evolution, the microhardness, and the tensile properties of tube samples were analyzed using tests and numerical simulations. The results show that the microstructure of each part of t

Numerical and Experimental Investigations of Fracture Behaviour of Welded Joints with Multiple Defects.

Current standards related to welded joint defects (EN ISO 5817) only consider individual cases (i.e., single defect in a welded joint). The question remains about the behaviour of a welded joint in the simultaneous presence of several different types of defects, so-called multiple defects, which is the topic of this research. The main focus is on defects most commonly encountered in practice, such as linear misalignments, undercuts, incomplete root penetration, and excess weld metal. The welding procedure used in this case was metal active gas welding, a common technique when it comes to weldi

Welding fumes composition and their effects on blood heavy metals in albino rats.

Toxic substances produced during welding include heavy metals, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. The study aims to evaluate the heavy metals concentration in welding fumes and the blood of the animals exposed to welding fumes. The fumes were collected from a welding site by a skilled welder and part of it was subjected to metals analysis. A total of 130 rats were divided into 13 groups. 12 groups were given doses calculated to correspond to real-life workers exposure regimes and 1 group served as control. The dosages were administered intratracheally after anesthetization w

Exposure to Welding Fumes, Hexavalent Chromium, or Nickel and Risk of Lung Cancer.

To investigate the risk of lung cancer after exposure to welding fumes, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), and nickel, we analyzed 3,418 lung cancer cases and 3,488 controls among men from 2 German case-control studies (1988-1996). We developed a welding-process exposure matrix from measurements of these agents, and this was linked with welding histories from a job-specific questionnaire to calculate cumulative exposure variables. Logistic regression models were fitted to estimate odds ratios with confidence intervals conditional on study, and they adjusted for age, smoking, and working in other at

Transport and Deposition of Welding Fume Agglomerates in a Realistic Human Nasal Airway.

Welding fume is a complex mixture containing ultra-fine particles in the nanometer range. Rather than being in the form of a singular sphere, due to the high particle concentration, welding fume particles agglomerate into long straight chains, branches, or other forms of compact shapes. Understanding the transport and deposition of these nano-agglomerates in human respiratory systems is of great interest as welding fumes are a known health hazard. The neurotoxin manganese (Mn) is a common element in welding fumes. Particulate Mn, either as soluble salts or oxides, that has deposited on the olf

Fate of manganese associated with the inhalation of welding fumes: potential neurological effects.

Welding fumes are a complex mixture composed of different metals. Most welding fumes contain a small percentage of manganese. There is an emerging concern among occupational health officials about the potential neurological effects associated with the exposure to manganese in welding fumes. Little is known about the fate of manganese that is complexed with other metals in the welding particles after inhalation. Depending on the welding process and the composition of the welding electrode, manganese may be present in different oxidation states and have different solubility properties. These dif

Bronchocarcinogenic properties of welding and thermal spraying fumes containing chromium in the rat.

The possible bronchocarcinogenic effects of fumes released during the shielded metal arc welding of stainless steel and the thermal spraying of chromium oxide (Cr2O3) have been studied on the rat. The fume particles were shown to contain tri- and hexavalent chromium in soluble and low soluble forms; they were collected and implanted as pellets in the bronchi of groups of 100 rats by the method of Laskin et al. A negative control group of 100 rats was included, as well as positive controls receiving pellets containing benz(a)pyrene. The experiment was continued for 34 months; no differences of

Speciation of hexavalent chromium in welding fumes interference by air oxidation of chromium.

The determination of various chromium species in welding fume normally involves digestion in a hot alkaline solution. This work confirms that Cr(III) can be oxidized to Cr(VI) during this digestion. However, only dissolved forms of Cr(III), such as the hydroxochromate(III) ion, [Cr(OH)4], are susceptible to oxidation under these conditions. The air oxidation of Cr(III) can be prevented by hydrolytic destabilization of the hydroxochromate(III) complex by the presence of magnesium hydroxide precipitate. The procedure has been used successfully in the determination of insoluble chromium(VI) in we

Reversible Pulmonary Mass Associated with Long-term Welding Fume Exposure: A Case Report.

A 68-year-old long-term welder was referred for the evaluation of a right lower lobe opacity after a fever and cough had resolved. Chest CT revealed a mass-like lesion in the right lower lobe with heterogeneous high-attenuation areas and centrilobular nodular opacities in both upper lobes. A transbronchial biopsy of the mass-like lesion showed hemosiderin deposits with fibrosis and mild inflammation, without any findings strongly suggestive of infection or malignancy. The lesion partially regressed following a reduction in welding fume exposure, suggesting a possible association with chronic o

Welding of Advanced Aluminum-Lithium Alloys: Weldability, Processing Technologies, and Grain Structure Control.

Aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloys are extensively employed in aerospace and space structures because of their low density, high specific stiffness, and excellent fatigue resistance. However, welding of these alloys remains challenging, since the joints typically exhibit unique microstructural features, including equiaxed grain zones (EQZ) along the fusion boundary and coarse columnar grains in the fusion zone, which degrade mechanical performance and increase susceptibility to cracking. This review provides an overview of the generational evolution of Al-Li alloys and their associated weldabilit
