Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is a rare and complex congenital anomaly of the genitourinary system characterized by uterus didelphys, an obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. It is the result of the maldevelopment of both the Mullerian and Wolffian ducts. Clinical manifestations of dysmenorrhea, dysuria, and urinary retention appear after menarche due to the accumulation of menstrual blood and distention of the obstructed hemivagina. Diagnosis of this anomaly is often delayed, and the obstructive nature of the condition is missed due to cyclic menstruation from the o

A rare and autosomal recessive premature aging disorder, Werner syndrome (WS) is characterized by the early onset of aging-associated diseases, including shortening stature, alopecia, bilateral cataracts, skin ulcers, diabetes, osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis, and chromosomal instability, as well as cancer predisposition. WRN, the gene responsible for WS, encodes DNA helicase with a 3' to 5' exonuclease activity, and numerous studies have revealed that WRN helicase is involved in the maintenance of chromosome stability through actions in DNA, e.g., DNA replication, repair, recombination, and ep

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a rare congenital anomaly of the female urogenital tract that associates Müllerian duct anomalies with mesonephric duct anomalies. The triad of uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis characterizes this syndrome. Patients generally present with non-specific symptoms after menarche. Pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and palpable mass due to hematocolpos or hematometra are the most common findings. Pyohematocolpos and pyosalpinx may appear as acute complications, while endometriosis and pelvic adhesions constitute potential lon

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a congenital Müllerian duct anomaly characterized by uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. Little is reported about spinal deformity associated with this syndrome. This study presents a case of scoliosis occurring in the setting of HWWS and explores the possible association between the 2 diseases. A previously unreported scoliosis in HWWS is described. The patient is a 12-year-old Chinese female with scoliosis that underwent a posterior correction at thoracic 5-thoracic 12 (T5-T12) levels, using the Moss-SI (Johnso

INTRODUCTION: Uterus didelphys with obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis represents a complex congenital anomaly, also known in the literature as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome.
CASE OUTLINE: A 16-year-old patient presented with secondary amenorrhoea and abdominal pain. Her history revealed anorexia nervosa; she had menarche at the age of 14; her menstrual cycles were regular, with progressive dysmenorrhoea. Nine months after the explorative laparotomy performed at the regional healthcare center there was no a definitive diagnosis. Pelvic examination showed a paravagi

CEBPA-associated familial acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an autosomal dominant leukemia predisposition syndrome associated with germline variants in the CEBPA gene. Werner syndrome (WS) is an autosomal recessive progeroid syndrome causing premature aging and malignancies (e.g., AML). We report a 41-year-old man referred for medical genetic evaluation because of 3 synchronous tumors (colon, kidney, and thyroid) and premature aging. He underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) at 12 years of age because of AML diagnosed 3 years earlier. His sister (donor for the HSCT) and his bro

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the triad of uterus didelphys, unilateral obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. However, atypical presentations such as acute urinary retention are uncommon and pose diagnostic challenges. Early identification and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term complications like endometriosis and infertility.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old female presented with the unusual symptom of acute urinary retention, which was likely caused by compression of the bladder ne

BACKGROUND: Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is a rare Müllerian duct anomaly, characterized by a combination of urogenital abnormalities. The occurrence of primary cervico-vaginal carcinomas in patients with HWW syndrome is exceptionally rare, posing significant challenges for screening, early diagnosis, and effective management.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a rare case of primary clear cell carcinoma of the vagina complicated in a 40-year-old woman with HWW syndrome. The patient presented with irregular vaginal bleeding for 4 years. On gynecological examination, an oblique vaginal septum

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich (HWW) syndrome is characterized by obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly, a rare congenital anomaly of the genitourinary tract, resulting from malformations of the renal tract associated with Müllerian duct anomalies. The initial symptoms of HWW frequently present after menarche and may be nonspecific, leading to a delayed diagnosis. We presented a 19-year-old female with 3-year hematuria and abdominal pain. The final diagnosis of HWW syndrome with a rare vesicovaginal fistula was made. The treatment of HWW syndrome typically involves surgical interventio

Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWs) is a rare congenital malformation of the female urogenital track characterized by a triad consisting of didelphys uterus, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. We report 5 consecutive cases of patients diagnosed with HWWs treated in our center. Imaging studies with 2-dimensional/3-dimensional ultrasound and abdominopelvic magnetic resonance imaging were obtained to confirm the diagnosis. The treatment consisted of a 1-step surgical in-office hysteroscopic incision of the vaginal septum using 5 Fr hysteroscopic bipolar electrodes. At the

We herein report a case of Werner's syndrome (WS) with cardiac syndrome X (CSX) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), receiving nicorandil treatment. A 58-year-old woman with chest discomfort on exercise was suspected of having effort-angina pectoris because of broad ST-depression in electrocardiogram of exercise test and reversible defect in the posterior-wall portion of left ventricle in exercise thallium201 myocardial scintigraphy. This patient also exhibited HFpEF, diagnosed by increased ratio of early-transmitral-flow-velocity to tissue-Doppler early-diastolic mitral

Werner syndrome (WS) is a hereditary premature aging disorder characterized by visceral fat accumulation and subcutaneous lipoatrophy, resulting in severe insulin resistance. However, its underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we show that senescence-associated inflammation and suppressed adipogenesis play a role in subcutaneous adipose tissue reduction and dysfunction in WS. Clinical data from four Japanese patients with WS revealed significant associations between the decrease of areas of subcutaneous fat and increased insulin resistance measured by the glucose clamp. Adipose-d

Age-associated minor inflammation: inflammageing may explain human ageing mechanism(s). Our previous study reported a significant increase in the serum level of highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) with normal ageing and the patients with Werner syndrome (WS). To further study the minor inflammatory condition associated with ageing, another possible ageing biomarker: matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) was examined in the sera from 217 normal Japanese individuals aged between 1 and 100 years and 41 mutation-proven Japanese WS aged between 32 and 70 years. MMP9 was assayed by ELISA. The se

A neonate with a prenatal diagnosis of left renal agenesis was born at 33 weeks gestation. A postnatal abdominal ultrasound confirmed the absence of the left kidney and revealed two non-divergent hemiuteri, consistent with the diagnosis of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome. During admission, significant axial hypotonia was noted, warranting additional investigations. Brain ultrasounds and MRI were normal, as were a preliminary metabolic study and comparative genomic hybridisation array. DNA methylation testing confirmed the diagnosis of Prader-Willi syndrome. The baby was discharged after 70 d
