PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite the established efficacy and safety of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) worldwide, evidence from East Asian countries remains limited and may differ from that in Western countries. RECENT FINDINGS: This narrative review comprehensively summarises clinical trials and real-world studies on CGRP mAbs in East Asian populations. A total of 12 clinical trials and 23 real-world studies on galcanezumab, fremanezumab, and erenumab in East Asia were identified through MEDLINE and manual searches. After reviewing each country’s regulations on

On April 6, only 1000 days will remain until the end of 2000, the target date established by the World Health Assembly in 1988 for the eradication of poliomyelitis and included as a year 2000 goal by the World Summit for Children in 1990. Progress toward this goal has included elimination of endemic polio from the Western Hemisphere in 1991 and apparent elimination of endemic transmission in 1997 from both the Western Pacific and European (except Turkey and Tajikistan) regions of the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, globally, reported polio cases have decreased >90% since 1988. Th

A systematic review of the epidemiology of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) has been performed, applying strict criteria for quality of studies and the disease definition used. The prevalence and incidence of GORD was estimated from 15 studies which defined GORD as at least weekly heartburn and/or acid regurgitation and met criteria concerning sample size, response rate, and recall period. Data on factors associated with GORD were also evaluated. An approximate prevalence of 10-20% was identified for GORD, defined by at least weekly heartburn and/or acid regurgitation in the Western wo

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is an understudied infection and many aspects of viral transmission and clinical course remain unclear. With over 17000 EVD survivors in West Africa, the World Health Organization has focused its strategy on managing survivors and the risk of re-emergence of outbreaks posed by persistence of the virus during convalescence. Sexual transmission from survivors has also been documented following the 2014 epidemic and there are documented cases of survivors readmitted to hospital with 'recurrence' of EVD symptoms. In addition to persistence of virus in survivors, there is

In 1966, the Centers for Disease Control began training medical officers and public health advisors for a program that would encompass 20 countries of West and Central Africa with the objective of eradicating smallpox and controlling measles. The program was funded by the US Agency for International Development with a target of smallpox eradication within 5 years and the immunization of children from 6 months to 6 years of age against measles in all areas of every country. The 40 plus field staff were directed by a Regional Office in Lagos, Nigeria and a headquarters group in Atlanta, Georgia.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the causes and relative prevalence of hypercalcemia in patients at a major community hospital in Okinawa, Japan. Additionally, we compared these causes of hypercalcemia with the previously published international data.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed all patients with hypercalcemia in a community teaching hospital in Okinawa, Japan, from 1999 to 2002 and determined the cause of hypercalcemia in each patient. We also performed a literature review of the original articles describing causes of hypercalcemia in patients from Eastern as well as Western

In the South Asia region vast human populations are exposed daily and with considerable intensity to close contact with vast animal populations and their excreta. There is no veterinary public health unit in the World Health Organisation (WHO) South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) in New Delhi (India), the Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO) in Manila (Philippines) or the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) in Alexandria (Egypt). However, these offices do support a number of activities on zoonoses and food-borne diseases in WHO member countries of the region. Maintenance of the h

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease prevention and control strategies require a coordinated, transnational approach. To establish core capacities of the International Health Regulations (IHR), the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the Integrated Diseases Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy. Epidemic-prone Lassa fever, caused by Lassa virus, is an endemic disease in the West African countries of Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Benin, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Togo and Nigeria. It's one of the major public health threats in these countries. Here it is reported an epidemiological investigation of a cr

Ethical considerations for the use of unregistered interventions for Ebola virus disease have sparked considerable debate among academic and clinical ethicists. In August 2014 the World Health Organization (WHO) convened a panel of experts to discuss approaches to the outbreak in West Africa, with the goal of determining "whether it is ethical to use unregistered interventions with unknown adverse effects for possible treatment or prophylaxis". 1 The panel concluded that there would be an ethical imperative to provide such unregistered interventions if specific criteria could be met. This pape

In French speaking West Africa, yellow fever vaccine became compulsory in 1941 for the entire African and European population. From 1941 to 1960, 146 million doses were distributed and the number of yellow fever cases declined sharply. No case was reported from 1954 to 1960. As a result of an interruption in systematic immunization after 1960, ten major epidemics broke out in West Africa between 1965 and 1995 (over 200,000 cases and 40,000 deaths). In 1967, the WHO programme for eradication of smallpox was initiated and it mobilized WHO's energy and finances. The expanded programme of immuniza

Brucellosis is an uncommon infectious disease in the United States though it remains endemic in many parts of the world. Signs and symptoms of the disease are highly variable, with musculoskeletal complaints occurring frequently. The combination of an uncommon infection presenting with protean manifestations often results in missed or delayed diagnosis in the Western world.

There has been much speculation regarding differences in outcome for patients who have gastric cancer in the Eastern versus Western world. Among other factors, these differences have contributed to a unique cohort of patients and experience in the Western staging/evaluation of gastric cancer and in the application of minimally invasive approaches for treatment. This review summarizes the current state of laparoscopic approaches for the staging and treatment of gastric adenocarcinoma for patients presenting in Western countries, with their associated unique presentation, comorbidities, and outc

Most quantitative studies that survey nurses' attitudes toward euthanasia and/or assisted suicide, also attempt to assess the influence of religion on these attitudes. We wanted to evaluate the operationalisation of religion and world view in these surveys. In the Pubmed database we searched for relevant articles published before August 2008 using combinations of search terms. Twenty-eight relevant articles were found. In five surveys nurses were directly asked whether religious beliefs, religious practices and/or ideological convictions influenced their attitudes, or the respondents were requ

Report from various parts of the world indicate that there are differences in the total incidence of salivary gland tumors as well as in the frequency of particular histologic types and in the frequency with which major and minor salivary glands are involved; Moreover reports from African series have suggested a pattern of presentation that significantly differs from that of western countries. The purpose of this study is to clarify knowledge of salivary gland tumors in Ethiopia on the light of the experience gained form African and western countries. The study was based on the biopsy material

Mesothelioma is a cancer typically caused by asbestos. Mechanistically, asbestos carcinogenesis has been linked to the asbestos-induced release of HMGB1 from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, where HMGB1 promotes autophagy and cell survival, and to the extracellular space where HMGB1 promotes chronic inflammation and mesothelioma growth. Targeting HMGB1 inhibited asbestos carcinogenesis and the growth of mesothelioma. It is hoped that targeting HMGB1 will be a novel therapeutic strategy that benefits mesothelioma patients. Severe restrictions and/or a complete ban on the use of asbestos were intro

Liver transplantation (LT) has evolved rapidly since the first successful liver transplant performed in1967. Despite a humble beginning, this procedure gained widespread acceptance in the western world as a suitable option for patients with end stage liver disease (ESLD) by the beginning of the 1980s. At present, approximately 25,000 liver transplants are being performed worldwide every year with approximately 90% one year survival. The techniques of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) developed in East Asia in the 1990s to overcome the shortage of suitable grafts for children and scarci

Scurvy is a clinical syndrome, resulting from ascorbic acid deficiency. Prevalence of the condition is now extremely low in the Western population and its diagnosis can be challenging without a high index of suspicion. When cases do present, they are often misdiagnosed initially. Therefore, a thorough history, physical exam, and laboratory evaluation are key to showing this now rare but extremely well-known disease. We report a case of scurvy manifesting as persistent non-healing lower-extremity ulcerations, initially mistaken for pyoderma gangrenosum. The patient responded to appropriate repl

PURPOSE: This article systematically reviews studies of prevalence of childhood experience of physical and sexual abuse in adult people who are homeless in Western countries.
METHODS: Medline, PsychInfo, and the Cochrane Library were searched using the keywords: homeless*, child* abuse, child* trauma, and child* adversity and the bibliographies of identified articles were reviewed. Sources of heterogeneity in the prevalence rates were explored by meta-regression analysis.
RESULTS: Twenty-four reports published between January 1990 and August 2013 in three countries provided estimates obtaine
