Linking Freshwater Wetland Productivity and Methane Emissions: A Global Perspective.

Understanding the link between wetland gross primary productivity (GPP) and methane (CH4) emissions is crucial for global carbon cycle modeling, yet this coupling remains poorly constrained at a global scale due to data limitations. To address this critical gap, we compiled and analyzed the most comprehensive daily scale eddy covariance data set of GPP and CH4 fluxes. In this analysis, we define this coupling as the slope of the linear fit between carbon fixed by ecosystems and carbon emitted as CH4. Results indicate that the median lag time between CH4 emissions and GPP is 24.8 days. In terms

Ecological health and security of the Jazmurian Wetland Endorheic Watershed, Iran.

Wetlands represent a crucial category of aquatic ecosystems that face numerous threats, such as increasing population density, alterations in land-use, climate change, excessive extraction of water resources, and inadequate construction of reservoirs. As a result of these challenges, wetlands cannot perform their essential functions, which include meeting human demands, supporting tourism, mitigating dust storms, and maintaining the biodiversity of flora and fauna. Accordingly, assessing their health and service performance is essential. However, studies on the health and security assessment o

A Qualitative Analysis of UK Wetland Visitor Centres as a Health Resource.

The health benefits associated with spending time in natural environments have been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns and restrictions to safeguard public health have exacerbated the pre-existing mental health crisis and rise of non-communicable diseases. Thus, the importance of nature as a health resource has been elevated, hastening calls for a better understanding of how health benefits might differ across user groups and nature provisions. In this regard, urban green spaces have become the greatest research focus; however, blue spaces, especially inland freshwater (e.g.,

PAEs and PBDEs in plastic fragments and wetland sediments in Yangtze estuary.

Phthalates (PAEs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are widely used as additives in various plastic products. Because of their ubiquity and potential hazards to the environment, they have attracted widespread attention. This research supports the addition critical data of the concentration and distribution of PAEs and PBDEs in the plastic fragments and wetland sediments in Yangtze Estuary. The concentrations of Σ7PAEs and Σ9PBDEs in the plastic samples in Yangtze Estuary wetlands were 26.8-4241.8 μg/g and n.d. (no detectable) to 250.1 μg/g, respectively. The sixteen PAEs and eight PBD

Mercury accumulation and biotransportation in wetland biota affected by gold mining.

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective, eco-friendly technology for the removal of metals from polluted areas. In this study, six different plant species (Datura stramonium, Phragmites australis, Persicaria lapathifolia, Melilotus alba, Panicum coloratum, and Cyperus eragrostis) growing in a gold mine contaminated wetland were investigated as potential phytoremediators of mercury. The accumulation of total mercury and methylmercury in plant tissues was determined during the wet and dry seasons to establish the plants' variability in accumulation. The highest accumulation of total mercury was in

Wetland Management Strategy to Reduce Mercury in Water and Bioaccumulation in Fish.

Wetland environments provide numerous ecosystem services but also facilitate methylmercury (MeHg) production and bioaccumulation. We developed a wetland-management technique to reduce MeHg concentrations in wetland fish and water. We physically modified seasonal wetlands by constructing open- and deep-water treatment cells at the downstream end of seasonal wetlands to promote naturally occurring MeHg-removal processes. We assessed the effectiveness of reducing mercury (Hg) concentrations in surface water and western mosquitofish that were caged at specific locations within 4 control and 4 trea

Prospect of recovering phosphorus in magnesium slag-packed wetland filter.

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater not only reduces the unbearable impacts of excessive nutrient discharge on environmental systems but also favor the reuse of phosphorus resource. Based on the mechanism as well as technical analysis for major phosphorus recovery techniques including struvite precipitation and wetland substrate adsorption, a novel magnesium slag-packed wetland filter and corresponding operational procedures are proposed, which aim to reduce the dependence of using magnesium-containing chemical reagent as magnesium sources for struvite precipitation, and improve the accumulati

[Difference of P content in different area substrate of constructed wetland].

Adsorption of substrate is the main removal mechanisms of phosphorus in constructed wetland. It is easily impacted by various environmental factors existing in the wetland bed. The contents of substrate TP and the main inorganic P in different areas of both horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetland with plant and one without plant were measured after treating wastewater five months. Different areas of the wetland with plant differed greatly in the substrate TP. Rhizosphere substrate in front area had the highest TP content and achieved 0.75 g x kg(-1), and the TP content of non-rhizosphe

Observations of nitrogen and phosphorus biogeochemistry in a surface flow constructed wetland.

Free surface water constructed wetlands (CWs) provide a buffer between domestic wastewater treatment plants and natural waterways. Understanding the biogeochemical processes in CWs is crucial to improve their performance. In this study we measured a range of water and sediment parameters, and biogeochemical processes, in an effort to describe the processing of nutrients within two wetland cells in series. As a whole the studied CW effectively absorbed both nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) emanating from the waste treatment plant. However the two individual cells showed marked differences relate

Sulfate threshold target to control methylmercury levels in wetland ecosystems.

Sulfate contamination has a significant environmental implication through the stimulation of toxic hydrogen sulfide and methylmercury (MeHg) production. High levels of MeHg are a serious problem in many wetland ecosystems worldwide. In the Florida Everglades, it has been demonstrated that increasing MeHg occurrence is due to a sulfate contamination problem. A promising strategy of lowering the MeHg occurrence is to reduce the amount of sulfate entering the ecosystem. High surface water sulfate concentrations in the Everglades are mainly due to discharges from the Everglades Agricultural Area (

Potential of constructed wetland systems for treating tannery industrial wastewater.

This paper reports on findings of a study on the performance of two units of a Horizontal Sub-Surface Flow Constructed Wetland (HSSFCW) units in treating wastewater effluent from a tannery industry. One of the HSSFCW units was planted with macrophytes, while the other was used as a control (without plants). Wastewater was fed into the wetland units at the mean flow rate of 0.045+/-0.005 m(3)/day. The studied parameters were chromium, turbidity, salinity, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electric Conductivity (EC), pH and temperature. The mean Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) was 1.60 days (in the c

Degradation of dicamba by an anaerobic consortium enriched from wetland soil.

The biodegradability of dicamba was investigated under anaerobic conditions with a consortium enriched from wetland soil. Degradation proceeded through an initial demethylation reaction, forming 3,6-dichlorosalicylic acid, followed by reductive dechlorination, forming 6-chlorosalicylic acid. The consortium, consisting of a sulfate reducer, three methanogens, and a fermenter, was unable to mineralize the aromatic ring.

Physiological and Skin Microbiome Divergence Among Closely Related Anurans Co-Occurring in Agricultural Wetlands.

Understanding why endangered amphibian species decline while closely related congeners persist remains a central challenge in conservation biology. Host physiological traits and symbiotic microbial assemblages are increasingly recognized as important mediators of species responses to environmental conditions. Unlike broad comparative studies across geographically separated populations, we compared physiological capacity and skin microbiome characteristics among four anuran species, two endangered species and their respective common congeners from two genera (Dryophytes and Pelophylax), at a fi

Heavy metals at environmentally relevant concentrations enhance antibiotic and ammonia removal in constructed wetlands.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) as the last barrier for ensuring water quality often face the simultaneous occurrence of multiple pollutants such as metals, antibiotics and nutrients. However, the mechanisms by which environmentally relevant concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) influence pollutant removal processes remain poorly understood. In this study, HMs (Zn(II), As(V), and Pb(II)) at environmentally relevant concentrations significantly enhanced doxycycline (DOX) removal and promoted ammonia oxidation in CWs, indicating functional activation rather than inhibition. Mass balance and functional

Comparing stoichiometric measures of microbial limitation in wetlands of contrasting vegetation and nutrient status.

Microbial stoichiometries are commonly used to assess nutrients [carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P)] status and infer limitation in ecosystems, yet their consistency across environments remains largely unexamined. In this study, we compared microbial nutrient and enzymatic stoichiometries and enzymatic vector analysis across two well-characterized constructed wetland systems differing in dominant vegetation [emergent aquatic vegetation (EAV) vs submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV)] and associated nutrient gradients in the water column (high total P at inflow to low total P at outflow a

Restored wetlands: interplay between environmental variables, aboveground and belowground plant traits, and carbon cycling.

Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and climate change mitigation. Vast wetland areas have been lost through land-use intensification. Thus, restoration efforts have gained attention globally. We assessed relationships between environmental conditions, aboveground and belowground plant traits and carbon cycling in restored wetlands in Denmark, both grazed and ungrazed, compared to a baseline in near-natural wetlands. Wetland plant species strategy varied from acquisitive to conservative. More conservative species tended to have larger root diameters and higher percentages of root aerenchyma.

Micro-electric field-associated restructuring of bacterial communities enhances wastewater purification in constructed wetlands.

To improve microbial activity and shock resistance in constructed wetlands (CWs), we established micro-electric field (MEF) enhanced CW systems to investigate their regulatory effects on domestic sewage treatment performance and bacterial communities. The results showed that MEF significantly improved the removal efficiencies of TP (16.97%-17.13%), NH4 +-N (16.32%-28.93%), and COD (28.55%-53.81%). MEF also enhanced bacterial α diversity (Chao1, Shannon, Simpson) and altered community structure, with significant enrichment of Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota that positively correlated with pollu

Understanding and managing nutrient pollution in peri-urban wetlands: The Ciénegas del Lerma, Mexico.

Nutrient pollution has been broadly studied in developed countries, where the primary source is often agricultural diffuse pollution. However, more research is needed in developing countries with a predominance of low-income households, insufficient public service infrastructure, pressure from urban expansion, and scarce information. In this research, centered on the Lerma Cienega protected wetlands in a peri-urban area of Toluca city in Mexico, a socio-ecological systems framework was applied to study the nutrient pollution problem and recommend nutrient control measures. Increased snowpack enhances ecological functions of cold-region constructed wetlands via plant-microbe interactions.

Snowpack variations in cold regions exert profound influences on the ecological functioning of constructed wetlands (CWs), particularly with respect to GHG emissions and nutrient removal. However, the underlying mechanisms have yet to be clarified. This study established pilot-scale vertical subsurface flow CWs in Northeast China, with Phragmites australis and Iris sibirica, and applied doubled snowpack (DS) and natural snow cover (CK) during winter. DS created highly moist, strongly reducing, and alkaline conditions during the dormant period, significantly inhibiting microbial aerobic respira

Bioelectricity drives transformation of nitrogen and perfluorooctanoic acid in constructed wetlands: Performances and mechanisms.

In this study, constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) filled with modified basalt fiber (MBF) via iron modification was utilized for treating perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) containing sewage. Results showed the significant promotion by bioelectricity on ammonium and total nitrogen by 7.80-8.14 %. Although such enhancement was suppressed by PFOA, higher removal was still observed with closed circuit, and PFOA removal also increased by 9.05 %. Bioelectricity contributed to enrichment of bacteria involved in nitrifying (Nitrospira and Ellin6067), denitrifying (like Thauera and Dechloromo
