Impact of surface roughness and wettability on microbial adhesion of temporary prostheses made by additive, subtractive, and conventional methods.

The rising use of 3D-printed temporary prostheses calls for a deeper understanding of microbial adhesion to these prostheses, a topic that remains insufficiently explored. This study evaluates the surface properties and microbial adhesion of four types of temporary materials manufactured by different methods: two conventionally produced materials-poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and bis-acryl composite (BA)-and two digitally fabricated materials-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA, CAD/CAM milled) and difunctional methacrylate resin (3Dresin, 3D printed). A total of 120 specimens (n = 30 per materi

Facile Preparation of Raspberry-Like SiO2@Polyurea Microspheres with Tunable Wettability and Their Application for Oil-Water Separation.

Raspberry-like microspheres have been widely used as superhydrophobic materials, photonic crystals, drug carriers, etc. Nevertheless, their preparation methods, usually consisting of multiple steps, are generally time- and energy-consuming. Herein raspberry-like SiO2@polyurea microspheres (SiO2@PUM) are readily prepared via a one-step precipitation polymerization of isophorone diisocyanate in a H2O/acetone mixture with the presence of SiO2 particles. The sphere size, surface roughness, and SiO2 content of SiO2@PUM are easily adjustable by varying the experimental conditions. TEM and SEM observ

Molecular Mechanism Study on the Effect of Microstructural Differences of Octylphenol Polyoxyethylene Ether (OPEO) Surfactants on the Wettability of Anthracite.

Inhalable coal dust poses a serious threat to coal mining safety, air quality, and the health of miners. Therefore, the development of efficient dust suppressants is crucial for addressing this issue. This study evaluated the ability of three high-surface-active OPEO-type nonionic surfactants (OP4, OP9, and OP13) to improve the wetting properties of anthracite via extensive experiments and a molecular simulation and determined the micro-mechanism of different wetting properties. The surface tension results show that OP4 has the lowest surface tension (27.182 mN/m). Contact angle tests and wett

Study on the impact of photoaging on the generation of very small microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) and the wettability of plastic surface.

Photoaging is one of the important reasons for the sharp increase of waste plastics, especially microplastics (MPs), in the environment. Therefore, studying the photoaging of plastics is of great significance for controlling plastic pollution from the source. Nevertheless, there are few studies on plastic photoaging from the perspective of polymer structure. Besides, the capacity of different types of plastics to generate MPs with small particle size is relatively little studied. In view of this, we conducted a preliminary study on the capacity of different types of plastics to generate MPs us

Preparation, characterization, and evaluation of celecoxib eutectic mixtures with adipic acid/saccharin for improvement of wettability and dissolution rate.

Celecoxib (CEL) is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor therapeutically indicated for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, acute pain, and inflammation. However, its poor solubility and dissolution rate significantly hinders its broader application. In this study, eutectic mixtures, as binary pharmaceutical compositions of CEL with adipic acid (ADI) and saccharin (SAC), were identified through a phase diagram and Tammann's triangle intended to improve the wettability and dissolution rate of poorly water-soluble CEL. The contact angles at 0s in the liquid-solid inter

Barnacle settlement and the adhesion of protein and diatom microfouling to xerogel films with varying surface energy and water wettability.

Previous work has shown that organosilica-based xerogels have the potential to control biofouling. In this study, modifications of chemistry were investigated with respect to their resistance to marine slimes and to settlement of barnacle cyprids. Adhesion force measurements of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-coated atomic force microscopy (AFM) tips to xerogel surfaces prepared from aminopropylsilyl-, fluorocarbonsilyl-, and hydrocarbonsilyl-containing precursors, indicated that adhesion was significantly less on the xerogel surfaces in comparison to a poly(dimethylsiloxane) elastomer (PDMSE) stan

Antibacterial strategy via biomimetic shark skin wettability control: Enhancing wall shear stress to suppress bacterial colonisation on gastrointestinal staples.

Titanium alloy staples are widely used in gastrointestinal surgery. However, bacterial infection at the anastomotic site following surgery continues to be a significant concern due to the lack of effective treatment strategies. Inspired by shark skin structure, this study designed 5 sets of shark skin micro-textured staple surfaces with hydrophilic effects based on the Wenzel model. First, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to elucidate the regulatory influence of the surface on fluid velocity and wall shear stress in the gastrointestinal microenvironment. Wall shear

Effects of Microheterogeneous Wettability and Pore-Throat Structure on Asphaltene Precipitation in Tight Sandstone: Results from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.

The pore throat structure and microheterogeneous wettability of tight sandstone reservoirs are complex, which leads to varying asphaltene precipitation locations, contents, and distributions in different pores during CO2 flooding. Clarifying the heterogeneous wettability of different pore throat structures and their effects on asphaltene precipitation and adsorption is crucial for improving CO2 displacement efficiency. A series of experiments were conducted in this study, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), cast thin section (CTS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high-pres

Microscopic mechanism governing the effect of the polarity of functional groups on the interfacial wettability between coal and clean fracturing fluids.

To investigate the effects of different types, polarity, and contents of functional groups in coal on the wetting properties at the coal-clean fracturing fluid interface, two composite wetting models were established based on graphene carbon sheets: "clean fracturing fluids with different functional group polarities (strongly polar hydroxyl -OH, weakly polar ether -C-O-C-, non-polar methyl -CH3)" and "clean fracturing fluid with different amounts of functional groups (4%, 2%, 1%)". Using molecular simulations along with Coulomb's law, the electrostatic potential, frontier molecular orbitals, M

Influence of surface nanotopography and wettability on early phases of peri-implant soft tissue healing: an in-vivo study in dogs.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that nanotopography and wettability of implant surfaces contribute to osseointegration and long-term implant success. However, the effects of a hydrogenated surface with nanotubular and superhydrophilic properties on peri-implant soft tissue remain unclear. This study was designed to study the impact of a modified abutment surface on early soft tissue integration compared with a machined surface. METHODS: Thirty-six implants were placed at the bone level in the bilateral mandible of six beagles, followed by healing abutments belonging to the standard machine

Preliminary experience with growth factor and porcine graft-young collagenous wettable membrane in the treatment of chronic diabetic ulcer.

Chronic ulcers are well-known complication of diabetes mellitus, often compounded by infection. Healing of lesions is problematic in some cases using conventional treatment. We have treated a group of six hospitalized diabetic patients with chronic ulcer by a combined regimen consisting of metabolic control, parenteral antibiotics, growth factor and porcine graft-young collagenous wettable membrane (YCWM) treatment. Five of our uncontrolled group had their ulcers improved at 87 +/- 37.6 hospital days after 45.8 +/- 20.2 days of growth factor and YCWM treatment. In conclusion, growth factor and

High-Density Weak Hydrophobe Polymer for Heavy Oil Recovery in Hypersaline Reservoirs: Synergistic Mobility Control and Wettability Reversal.

The efficient recovery of heavy oil in hypersaline reservoirs (>100,000 mg·L-1 TDS) remains a critical challenge due to the rapid structural collapse of conventional hydrophobically associating polymers. Addressing this limitation, we propose a "High-Density Weak Hydrophobe" strategy. A novel amphiphilic terpolymer (AMDA) was synthesized via free-radical aqueous solution polymerization, featuring a remarkably high incorporation (14.3 mol %) of the short-chain, sterically bulky monomer diacetone acrylamide (DAAM). Unlike traditional polymers containing long-chain alkyl groups (e.g., C16-HMPAM)

Temperature-responsive properties of pH-sensitive poly(methacrylic acid)-grafted brush coatings with controlled wettability for cell culture.

Poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) is a well-known pH-responsive polymer with under-explored temperature-responsive properties. This study investigated the temperature-responsive properties of PMAA-grafted brush coatings, synthesized via the SI-ATRP polymerization of sodium methacrylate (NaMAA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) on glass surfaces. Distinct water contact angles were observed for PMAA brush coatings fabricated from NaMAA (38 deg) and MAA (60 deg) solutions. The reduced wettability of PMAA brushes from MAA indicates a reduced exposure of the hydrophilic moieties acquired during synthesis, whi

Predicting wettability of mineral/CO2/brine systems via data-driven machine learning modeling: Implications for carbon geo-sequestration.

Effectively storing carbon dioxide (CO2) in geological formations synergizes with algal-based removal technology, enhancing carbon capture efficiency, leveraging biological processes for sustainable, long-term sequestration while aiding ecosystem restoration. On the other hand, geological carbon storage effectiveness depends on the interactions and wettability of rock, CO2, and brine. Rock wettability during storage determines the CO2/brine distribution, maximum storage capacity, and trapping potential. Due to the high CO2 reactivity and damage risk, an experimental assessment of the CO2 wetta

The influence of ozone and acid mist on the amount and wettability of the surface waxes in Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.].

Three-year old Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] trees from two clones (4076 and 4102) of a medium altitude southern German provenance were transplanted in May 1986 into an acid brown earth soil. During the summers of 1987 and 1988 the trees were exposed in large-scale fumigation chambers (solardomes) to ozone at 100 or 20 nl 1-1 (control). Acid (pH 3.6) or control mist (pH 5.5) was applied daily to trees. The wettability of current and 1-year-old needles was assessed in November 1988 by measuring the contact angle of water droplets placed on needles, and the amount of surface wax was de
