BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between food hypersensitivity and atopic dermatitis (AD) in young children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a case-control design, 28 patients < 3 years old, with AD and 28 age-matched healthy children were included in the study. A detailed medical history of allergies and timing of weaning was obtained. Children underwent skin tests (prick and patch) to evaluate food hypersensitivity. The status of DA and food allergies in the study participants was investigated 4 years later.
RESULTS: There were more children with positive skin

IgE-mediated dietary hypersensitivity affects approximately 1% of the canine population. There are no breed associations and < or =50% of the patients are aged <1 year at presentation. The most common causative allergens are beef, chicken, milk, eggs, maize, wheat and soyabean. Affected dogs generally display cutaneous disease and 10-15% of the patients may have concurrent alimentary involvement. Diagnosis is currently based on dietary restriction followed by provocation. Procedures for the detection of serum allergen-specific IgE and IgG antibodies are widely available, but these tests correl

Food allergy (hypersensitivity) is a form of adverse food reaction caused by an immunological response to a particular food. IgE-mediated food allergy is responsible for most immediate-type food-induced hypersensitivity reactions. The prevalence of food allergy in the general population, not including oral allergy syndrome, is about 1-2%. While adults might tend to be allergic to fish, crustaceans, peanuts, and tree nuts, children, on the other hand, tend to be allergic to cow's milk, egg white, wheat, and soy. Food is the most common eliciting factor of anaphylaxis (45%), followed by drugs (2

Food allergy is a serious health issue affecting roughly 4% of children, with a substantial effect on quality of life. Prognosis is good for the most frequent allergens with almost all children outgrowing their allergy. However, the long-term implications for disease burden are substantial for children with persistent allergies (eg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish) and for those with high concentrations of milk, egg, and wheat IgE. Antigen avoidance has been the time-honoured approach both for prevention and treatment. However, findings from studies done in the past 5 years show that e

BACKGROUND: In recent years, food allergy, especially in the child population, has become an increasing problem in developed societies. In the youngest children, it is a frequent cause of gastrointestinal disorders. The atopy patch test, applied from several years in clinical practice, is one of the methods used in allergology.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of the work was an assessment of the diagnostic value of the atopy patch test in the diagnosis of allergy to cow's milk protein and to wheat proteins in children with gastrointestinal symptoms.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was comprised of

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), with its key features of abdominal pain and disturbed bowel habit, is thought by both patients and clinicians to be strongly influenced by diet. However, the complexities of diet have made identifying specific food intolerances difficult. Eating disorders can masquerade as IBS and may need specialist treatment. While typical food allergy is readily distinguished from IBS, the mechanisms of gut-specific adverse reactions to food are only just being defined. These may include gut-specific mast cell activation as well as non-specific activation by stressors and cer

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIAn), first reported in 1979, is a condition defined by the consumption of a trigger food with temporally related exercise that results in an immediate hypersensitivity (type 1) reaction in the setting of the trigger food being tolerated independent of exercise and exercise being tolerated in the absence of trigger food consumption. The most common trigger food in the west is wheat and shellfish in Asia. The exact mechanism of FDEIAn is unknown, though several hypotheses exist. Cofactors such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, alcohol c

The patient was an 18-year-old man who developed nephrotic syndrome after a 'wheat spider' bite (Latrodectus mactans). Due to this atypical manifestation of latrodectism, a renal biopsy was performed showing minimal change disease. The nephrotic syndrome subsided after 1 week without specific treatment. This self-limited evolution suggests that the mechanism of podocyte damage was temporary and potentially mediated by a secondary mechanism of hypersensitivity or direct effect of the α-latrotoxin. The patient did not show signs of relapse in subsequent checkup. This is the first reported case o

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Wheat gluten intolerance increases intestinal permeability, triggering inflammation that may directly affect liver function and compromise metabolic health.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 50) aged 21 days were divided into five groups (n = 10) based on dietary gluten levels over 100 days: G0 (0%), G14 (14%), G42 (42%), G70 (70%), and G70/0 (70% for the first 70 days, then 0% until euthanasia). At 121 days, the animals were weighed and euthanized, and blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses. Adipose tissue deposits and the liver were excised and weighed. Li

BACKGROUND: Many individuals without coeliac disease or wheat allergy reduce their gluten intake because they believe that gluten causes their gastrointestinal symptoms. Symptoms could be affected by negative expectancy. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effects of expectancy versus actual gluten intake on symptoms in people with non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS).
METHODS: This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, international, multicentre study was done at the University of Leeds (Leeds, UK), Maastricht University (Maastricht, the Netherlands), and Wageningen University an

Since the first description of celiac disease (CeD) by Samuel Gee in 1888 and the later "miraculous discovery" that bread was responsible for this condition following World War II in Europe, there has been an exponential growth of knowledge regarding CeD. Just when we thought that we knew everything there was to know about it, the disease is, however, offering new challenges, with its presentation having significantly morphed over the years from cases of overt gastrointestinal symptoms, malnutrition, and atrophic villi on duodenal biopsies to that of largely extraintestinal, subtle, or mild sy

In the last decade, the ingestion of gluten, a heterogeneous complex of proteins present in wheat, rice, barley and probably in oats, has been associated with clinical disorders, such as celiac disease, wheat allergy and recently to non-celiac gluten sensitivity or wheat intolerance syndrome. Gluten-related disorders, which are becoming epidemiologically relevant with an estimated global prevalence of about 5%, require the exclusion of gluten from the diet. For the past 5 years, an important shift in the availability of gluten-free products, together with increased consumption in the general p

Celiac disease is the most common oral intolerance in Western countries. It results from an immune response towards gluten proteins from certain cereals in genetically predisposed individuals (HLA-DQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8). Its pathogenesis involves the adaptive (HLA molecules, transglutaminase 2, dendritic cells, and CD4(+) T-cells) and the innate immunity with an IL-15-mediated response elicited in the intraepithelial compartment. At present, the only treatment is a permanent strict gluten-free diet (GFD). Multidisciplinary studies have provided a deeper insight of the genetic and immunological fa

Wheat-related disorders have become a growing area of clinical and scientific interest and can be categorized broadly as: autoimmune-mediated; allergic; and non-autoimmune/non-allergic conditions. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS) present on this spectrum as disorders associated with adverse gastrointestinal and extra-intestinal manifestations following exposure to gluten and/or other wheat-related constituents. NCGS/NCWS is increasingly considered in patients with unexplained symptoms after the exclusions of celiac disease and wheat allergy. As objec

This review provides a brief overview of the gluten-related conditions coeliac disease (CD), wheat allergy (WA), and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). NCGS is a new entity which includes individuals who report symptoms when exposed to gluten and benefit from gluten-free diet, but do not have CD or WA. The concept NCGS is still controversial and a subject of considerable overdiagnosis, and consensus regarding diagnostic criteria is lacking. Furthermore, the overlap with irritable bowel syndrome is unsettled.

Gluten and other related proteins of the wheat, rye and barley, have antigenic properties that may trigger adverse reactions in susceptible individuals. Celiac disease was the first pathology with clear causal association related to the intake of these proteins. Recently, wheat allergy and non celiac gluten sensitivity have been described. Although, clinical presentation and its relation with protein ingestion may be similar and elicit confusion, their pathogenic mechanism, diagnosis and treatment are quite different. Since the prevalence of these diseases is relatively high as a whole, it is

Tandem kinases are emerging regulators of plant immunity, but the downstream defense programs they activate remain poorly understood. Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a major constraint on global wheat production. The Yr15 resistance gene, derived from wild emmer wheat, encodes the tandem kinase protein WTK1. To define the temporal basis of this resistance, we analysed resistant and susceptible near-isogenic lines across a 7-day infection time course using histopathology, ROS phenotyping, RNA sequencing, co-expression network analysis, and qRT-PCR validation

Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) is a special form of IgE-mediated food allergy and exhibits allergic symptoms in combination of causative food-intake and triggers such as exercise. As the causative foods and the condition of triggers vary among patients, diagnosis of FDEIA is not always easy. Serum food-specific IgE tests, which are widely used in the diagnosis of FDEIA, have rather low sensitivity, because the tests mostly utilize crude extracts of foods. Concept of using defined allergen molecules has been proposed as the term "component-resolved diagnostics" for diagnosi
