BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by a significant decrease in mobility due to its neurodegenerative etiology. Throughout the progression of ALS, patients lose independence in their motor control. An electromyography (EMG) interface that enables control of a powered wheelchair can restore autonomous movement. The use of serious game-based training that mimics EMG-temporalis wheelchair controls can be used as training prior to wheelchair usage in the real world.
PURPOSE: Limbitless Runner, a forearm EMG training game, found improved player performance with no sig

IMPORTANCE: Several diseases and conditions, such as cerebrovascular disease, arthritis, previous fractures, neurological diseases, or amputation, can result in severe immobility justifying wheelchair use for increased mobility. Immobility results in disuse osteoporosis and is considered a risk factor for fracture, although there are no large cohort studies that have investigated fracture risk in patients who use wheelchairs compared with an ambulatory control group.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether immobilized adults who used wheelchairs had a different risk of fracture and injurious falls

There has been a growth in the design and use of power assist devices for manual wheelchairs (MWCs) to alleviate the physical load of MWC use. A pushrim-activated power-assisted wheel (PAPAW) is an example of a power assist device that replaces the conventional wheel of a MWC. Although the use of PAPAWs provides some benefits to MWC users, it can also cause difficulties in maneuvering the wheelchair. In this research, we examined the characteristics of wheelchair propulsion when using manual and powered wheels. We used the left and right wheels' angular velocity to calculate the linear and ang

AIMS: This pilot study measured activities of daily living (ADLs) in users propelling both a standard dual handrim Action 3 wheelchair and a standard Action 3 wheelchair with a Neater Uni-Wheelchair (NUW) kit attachment. The kit consists of a steerable front castor and a single pushrim propelling both rear wheels via a differential.
HYPOTHESIS: There would be a difference in the efficiency of ADL skill performance, speed and heart rate.
METHODS: Twenty non-disabled participants simulating hemiplegia were used in a cross over, repeated measures trial. Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (A

OBJECTIVE: This study had its genesis in a personally observed collision between a motor vehicle and a motorized wheelchair (electric mobility device) on a busy street in the middle of the block at an unmarked crossing. To the observer, at the time, this appeared to be a suicidal act. This investigation was initiated to both delineate the number of these crashes nationally and understand this phenomena as a potentially planned act of self-destruction.
DESIGN: An initial survey of police reports was immediately frustrated by an inability to separate motor vehicle and electric mobility device c

PURPOSE: Prior to identifying optimal restraint or containment systems to prevent people using manual wheelchairs sliding or tipping on large public transit buses, the forces that destabilise them must be understood. This pilot study documented the (1) forces that wheelchairs experience on buses, (2) movement of wheelchairs on buses, and (3) differences between normal operating forces and the forces that lead to a wheelchair sliding or tipping. Methods: Data on the forces that acted on three manual wheelchairs were gathered using accelerometers across six bus routes with varied terrain. Data r

This study evaluated the impact of a transfer board on reducing physical demands during wheelchair-to-bed and bed-to-wheelchair transfers. A quasi-experimental pre- and post-intervention design was conducted with 23 university students simulating individuals with disabilities after training in transfer board use. Dependent variables included cardiovascular load (heart rate), transfer time, and perceived effort (Borg scale). Using the transfer board significantly reduced cardiovascular load from 19.2% to 11.2% (p = 0.001), decreased transfer time by 23.1% (p = 0.03), and lowered perceived effor

Accessibility is an essential consideration in the design of public spaces, and commonly referred to as 'pedestrian accessibility' when walking is the primary mode of transportation. Computational methods, frequently coupled with Geographic Information systems (GIS), are increasingly available for assessing pedestrian accessibility using digital cartographic data such as road networks and digital terrain models. However, they often implicitly assume a level of mobility that may not be achievable by individuals with mobility impairments, e.g., wheelchair users. Therefore, it remains uncertain w

This paper describes a novel Deep Learning architecture to assist with steering a powered wheelchair. A rule-based approach is utilized to train and test a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) Neural Network. It is the first time a LSTM has been used for steering a powered wheelchair. A disabled driver uses a joystick to provide desired speed and direction, and the Neural Network provides a safe direction for the wheelchair. Results from the Neural Network are mixed with desired speed and direction to avoid obstacles. Inputs originate from a joystick and from three ultrasonic transducers attached to

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether bacterial contamination of rider's hands is less with a novel ergonomic wheelchair (EW) than a standard wheelchair (SW).
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: After wheelchair hand rims were disinfected, volunteers wearing nitrile gloves propelled each wheelchair through a standardised "run" in hospital. Post-run cultures were obtained from riders' gloved hands. Bacterial hand counts were compared between runs matched by rider (same rider, different chairs) or time (different riders in each chair, running concurrently), and overall.

Multiple sclerosis, currently incurable and potentially profoundly disabling demyelinating central nervous system disease, is associated with higher occurrence of suicide as affected individuals are prone to major depression and psychosis. Despite progressively incapacitating neurologic impairment, well-staffed institutions, and limited repertoire of methods of suicide, which prevents patients from purposefully ending their lives, suicide-determined patients typically commit suicide resulting from a medication overdose, sharp force traumata, self-neglect, or deliberate starvation. Here we desc

Independent mobility is vital to individuals of all ages, and wheelchairs have proven to be great personal mobility devices. The tasks of opening and navigating through a door are trivial for healthy people, while the same tasks could be difficult for some wheelchair users. A wide range of intelligent wheelchair controllers and systems, robotic arms, or manipulator attachments integrated with wheelchairs have been developed for various applications, including manipulating door knobs. Unfortunately, the intelligent wheelchairs and robotic attachments are not widely available as commercial produ
