Assessing landscape scale wildfire exposure for highly valued resources in a Mediterranean area.

We used a fire simulation modeling approach to assess landscape scale wildfire exposure for highly valued resources and assets (HVR) on a fire-prone area of 680 km(2) located in central Sardinia, Italy. The study area was affected by several wildfires in the last half century: some large and intense fire events threatened wildland urban interfaces as well as other socioeconomic and cultural values. Historical wildfire and weather data were used to inform wildfire simulations, which were based on the minimum travel time algorithm as implemented in FlamMap. We simulated 90,000 fires that replica

Respiratory symptoms following wildfire smoke exposure: airway size as a susceptibility factor.

BACKGROUND: Associations between exposure to smoke during wildfire events and respiratory symptoms are well documented, but the role of airway size remains unclear. We conducted this analysis to assess whether small airway size modifies these relationships. METHODS: We analyzed data from 465 nonasthmatic 16- to 19-year-old participants in the Children's Health Study. Following an outbreak of wildfires in 2003, each student completed a questionnaire about smoke exposure, dry and wet cough, wheezing, and eye symptoms. We used log-binomial regression to evaluate associations between smoke exposu

Geographical Information Systems-Based Wildfire Risk Analysis of Canadian Dialysis Facilities.

INTRODUCTION: People receiving in-center hemodialysis face heightened disaster vulnerability. Strengthening system resilience is essential, and a risk assessment can strategically guide these efforts. We conducted a risk analysis of Canadian dialysis facilities (DFs) from wildfires. METHODS: Using a Geographical Information Systems-based method, we integrated the location of DFs with multiple publicly available datasets to assess historical wildfire exposure, conduct a current wildfire risk assessment, and estimate patients at risk. RESULTS: We mapped 341 DFs using georeferenced point data t

Wildfire smoke exposure and persistent respiratory symptoms and illness: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Wildfire smoke is a growing public health hazard yet there is limited evidence on its intermediate or long-term respiratory health effects. Studying the association between wildfire smoke exposure and indicators of impaired respiratory health such as persistent respiratory illness and respiratory symptoms can help elucidate the associated risk of developing chronic lung disease. We sought to determine whether wildfire smoke exposure is associated with medically-attended respiratory illness (MARI) and respiratory symptoms persisting beyond the acute wildfire period. METHODS: This w

Critical exposure windows for wildfire PM2.5 during pregnancy and preterm birth in Brazil.

Wildfire smoke is an increasingly important air-pollution exposure, yet evidence on critical windows of susceptibility for pregnancy outcomes remains limited in Brazil. We evaluated the association between wildfire-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and preterm birth, focusing on lag-specific effects across pregnancy weeks and heterogeneity by sociodemographic groups. We conducted a nationwide ecological time-series study using weekly municipality-level panels in Brazil from 2002 to 2022. The outcome was weekly counts of preterm births, modeled with a quasi-Poisson regression and the log

Real-life observation of wildfire smoke-impaired COVID-19 vaccine immunity.

BACKGROUND: Wildfires are increasingly common, with wildfire smoke affecting millions globally; yet, its impact on immune responses is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This real-world study, conducted on participants in the Pfizer BNT162b2 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine trial, examined the effects of wildfire smoke exposure on long-term vaccine immunity. METHODS: We recruited 52 healthy, nonsmoking individuals (aged 26-83 years) who were either vaccinated (group 1 [n = 28]) or injected with placebo (group 2 [n = 24]) during conditions of heavy wildfire smoke. The group 2 subjects u

Medium-term Exposure to Wildfire Smoke PM 2.5 and Cardiorespiratory Hospitalization Risks.

BACKGROUND: Wildfire activity in the United States has increased substantially in recent decades. Smoke fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), a primary wildfire emission, can remain in the air for months after a wildfire begins, yet large-scale evidence of its health effects remains limited. METHODS: We obtained hospitalization records for the residents of 15 states between 2006 and 2016 from the State Inpatient Databases. We used existing daily smoke PM 2.5 estimations at 10-km 2 grid cells across the contiguous United States and aggregated them to ZIP codes to match the spatial resolution of h

Epidemiological and Clinical Evidence on the Association Between Wildfire PM2.5 and Pulmonary Health Outcomes.

As climate change accelerates the frequency and severity of wildfires worldwide, the pulmonary consequences of wildfire smoke exposure have emerged as an important yet under-recognized public health concern. Wildfire-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) possesses distinct toxicologic properties compared to urban PM2.5 and disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including children, older adults, and individuals with chronic respiratory diseases. This narrative review synthesizes current epidemiological, mechanistic, and clinical evidence on the impact of wildfire PM2.5 on exacerba

Wildfire-Related Air Pollution and Infectious Diseases: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Amid the global rise in wildfire events, the health impacts of wildfire-related air pollution are increasingly scrutinized. While numerous reviews have examined the link between air pollution and infectious diseases, reviews specifically focusing on wildfire-related air pollution and infectious diseases remain scarce. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive search in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science databases up to December 31, 2023, using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews & Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Search terms included synonyms of wildfire and inf

Aging, longevity, and the role of environmental stressors: a focus on wildfire smoke and air quality.

Aging is a complex biological process involving multiple interacting mechanisms and is being increasingly linked to environmental exposures such as wildfire smoke. In this review, we detail the hallmarks of aging, emphasizing the role of telomere attrition, cellular senescence, epigenetic alterations, proteostasis, genomic instability, and mitochondrial dysfunction, while also exploring integrative hallmarks - altered intercellular communication and stem cell exhaustion. Within each hallmark of aging, our review explores how environmental disasters like wildfires, and their resultant inhaled t

Five Years after the Fort McMurray Wildfire: Prevalence and Correlates of Low Resilience.

BACKGROUND: The Fort McMurray wildfire of 3 May 2016 was one of the most devastating natural disasters in Canadian history. Although resilience plays a crucial role in the daily functioning of individuals by acting as a protective shield that lessens the impact of disasters on their mental well-being, to date little is known about the long-term impact of wildfires on resilience and associated predictors of low resilience. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence and predictors of resilience among residents of Fort McMurray five years after the wildfires. METHOD: Th

Wildfire Induces Changes in Receiving Waters: A Review With Considerations for Water Quality Management.

Wildfires have increased in frequency in many ecosystems, with implications for human health and the environment, including water quality. Increased fire frequency and urbanization also raise the prospect of fires burning into urban areas, mobilizing pollutants few have considered to date. As a result, water quality managers lack information to anticipate, respond to and potentially mitigate wildfire impacts. Here, we reviewed the scientific literature to assess wildfire effects on response endpoints of a conceptual model linking fire to water quality, quantifying response directionality, magn

Wildfire exposure during pregnancy and the risk of adverse birth outcomes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Maternal wildfire exposure (e.g., smoke, stress) has been associated with poor birth outcomes with effects potentially mediated through air pollution and psychosocial stress. Despite the recent hike in the intensity and frequency of wildfires in some regions of the world, a critical appraisal of the evidence on the association between maternal wildfire exposure and adverse birth outcomes has not yet been undertaken. We conducted a systematic review that evaluated the scientific evidence on the association between wildfire exposure during pregnancy and the risk of adverse birth outc

Wildfire of Soybean Caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci, a New Disease in Korea.

In 2006 and 2007, a new bacterial disease was observed in field-cultivated soybeans in Boeun District and Munkyung City of Korea. The disease caused severe blighting of soybean (Glycine max) leaves. Soybean leaves in fields showed yellowish spots with brown centers. Brown and dead areas of variable size and shape were surrounded by wide, yellow haloes with distinct margins. Spots might coalesce and affected leaves fell readily. Seven bacterial strains were isolated from chlorotic areas of soybean leaves and all produced white colonies on trypticase soy agar. With the Biolog Microbial Identific

Pollution and toxicity of heavy metals in wildfires-affected soil and surface water: A review and meta-analysis.

Wildfires, both natural and man-made, release and mobilize hazardous substances such as heavy metal(loids) (HM), which are known carcinogens. Following intense rainfall events, HM bound to soil organic matter are transported from the soil to surface water, resulting in water quality degradation. This study reviews the pollution status of HM in wildfire-affected soil and surface water, as well as their toxic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. The rate of HM release during wildfires depends on factors such as the type of tree burned and fire severity. The mobility of HM from soil to surfac

Assessing Air Quality and Health Benefits of Enhanced Management of Forests, Shrublands, and Grasslands Against Wildfires in California.

California wildfires have grown increasingly frequent and intense over recent decades, raising serious public health concerns. In response, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 2022 Scoping Plan outlines land management strategies to reduce wildfire risk and associated emissions under various climate change scenarios. This study evaluates the health benefits of CARB's official mitigation pathway, the S3 scenario, compared to a business-as-usual approach, using three global climate models (GCMs) and three future time slices. We apply the GEOS-Chem model to estimate fire-induced PM2.5 conce

Volatile Organic Compound Monitoring during Extreme Wildfires: Assessing the Potential of Sensors Based on LbL and Sputtering Films.

A new theory suggests that flammable gases generated by heated vegetation, in particular the volatile organic compounds (VOC) common to Mediterranean plants, may, under certain topographic and wind conditions, accumulate in locations where, after the arrival of the ignition source, they rapidly burst into flames as explosions. Hence, there is a need for the development of a system that can monitor the development of these compounds. In this work, a sensor's array is proposed as a method for monitoring the amount of eucalyptol and α-pinene, the major VOC compounds of the Eucalyptus and Pine tre
