The Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention: A review of findings and current directions.

The Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention is a longitudinal observational cohort study enriched with persons with a parental history (PH) of probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. Since late 2001, Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention has enrolled 1561 people at a mean baseline age of 54 years. Participants return for a second visit 4 years after baseline, and subsequent visits occur every 2 years. Eighty-one percent (1270) of participants remain active in the study at a current mean age of 64 and 9 years of follow-up. Serially assessed cognition, self-reported medical and

A large community outbreak of blastomycosis in Wisconsin with geographic and ethnic clustering.

BACKGROUND: Blastomycosis is a potentially life-threatening infection caused by the soil-based dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis, which is endemic throughout much of the Midwestern United States. We investigated an increase in reported cases of blastomycosis that occurred during 2009-2010 in Marathon County, Wisconsin. METHODS: Case detection was conducted using the Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS). WEDSS data were used to compare demographic, clinical, and exposure characteristics between outbreak-related and historical case patients, and to calculate blastomy

Von Willebrand disease in the United States: a perspective from Wisconsin.

Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a common bleeding disorder with prevalence in the United States of 0.01 to 1% and a prevalence in the region around Milwaukee, Wisconsin, of at least 0.025%. Care of local patients with VWD primarily occurs through our comprehensive treatment centers, although some patients are managed solely by their primary care physician or community hematologist. Type 1 VWD is the most common subtype, with more females carrying this diagnosis than males. Diagnosis and treatment in general follows guidelines outlined by the National Institutes of Health. An ongoing study, the

Reliability of the Wisconsin Sleep Questionnaire: a French contribution to international validation.

We evaluated the reliability of a French version of the Wisconsin Sleep Questionnaire designed to investigate snoring, obstructive apnoeas, and sleeping problems. The assessment of reliability included the study of internal consistency and the 3 months repeatability of the questionnaire. The questionnaire was first completed at a Center of Preventive Medicine by a random sample of 122 subjects from the community. Three months later the same form was mailed and 82 questionnaires were returned (67.2%). No significant differences existed between responders and nonresponders for anthropometric dat

Coinfection with Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi in a western Wisconsin resident.

A 68-year-old woman, who had not traveled outside of western Wisconsin, was hospitalized after 4 weeks of chills, fevers, myalgias, neuralgias in her right arm, and pain in the right upper quadrant of her abdomen. Physical examination revealed hepatosplenomegaly, and laboratory studies showed anemia, thrombocytopenia, increased aspartate transaminase level, and microscopic hematuria. Wright's stain of a blood smear revealed intraerythrocytic organisms consistent with Babesia species. A polymerase chain reaction of whole blood specimens along with an increased serologic titer confirmed the diag

Cervical Tuberculosis Lymphadenitis (Scrofula) in Wisconsin: Case Report, Pitfalls, and Challenges.

INTRODUCTION: This case report presents a case of cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis (scrofula) in Wisconsin, illustrating the diagnostic challenges in a low-prevalence setting. It emphasizes the importance of including tuberculosis (TB) in the differential diagnosis of persistent cervical lymphadenopathy, particularly in patients with a history of latent TB infection. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old woman presented with a persistent, painless left-sided neck mass without local warmth or erythema, characteristic of a cold abscess. Initial imaging demonstrated lymph node abnormalities, while

Newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy: The Wisconsin first year experience.

Spinal muscular atrophy was recently added to the Wisconsin newborn screening panel. Here we report our screening methods, algorithm, and outcomes. A multiplex real-time PCR assay was used to identify newborns with homozygous SMN1 exon 7 deletion, and those newborns' specimens further underwent a droplet digital PCR assay for SMN2 copy number assessment. An independent dried blood spot specimen was collected and tested to confirm the initial screening results for SMN1 and SMN2. From October 15, 2019 to October 14, 2020, a total of 60,984 newborns were screened for spinal muscular atrophy. Six

Mercury in swamp sparrows (Melospiza georgiana) from wetland habitats in Wisconsin.

Wetlands play a major role in the export of methylmercury (MeHg) to a watershed. The large contribution of wetlands to watersheds in northern Wisconsin, coupled with the acidic environment of this area, makes these habitats especially vulnerable to mercury (Hg) accumulation by biota. The purpose of this study was to compare Hg accumulation between northern Wisconsin wetlands and southern Wisconsin wetlands using the swamp sparrow (Melospiza georgiana) as a representative species. The swamp sparrow was selected as a representative passerine species in which to examine Hg in these habitats, beca

Modeling geographic risk of complex congenital heart defects in Eastern Wisconsin.

BACKGROUND: Geographic variation may be an indicator of risk factors for birth defects. This study models the geographic distribution of three complex congenital heart defects (CHDs) in eastern Wisconsin, and evaluates effects of demographic census variables linked to geographic location. METHODS: Cases of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and d-Transposition of the Great Arteries (d-TGAs) born between1995 and 2004 were identified from three medical centers serving eastern Wisconsin. Case diagnoses were assigned by a pediatric cardiologist using echocardiograph

Norovirus outbreaks on three college campuses - California, Michigan, and Wisconsin, 2008.

Noroviruses are the most common cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Norovirus outbreaks affect persons of all ages and occur in a wide variety of settings (e.g., nursing homes, hospitals, restaurants, communities, schools, day care centers, military barracks, and cruise ships). During fall 2008, three norovirus outbreaks occurring on college campuses in California, Michigan, and Wisconsin were reported to CDC. Public health investigations led by the respective state and local health departments were conducted to characterize the extent of the outbreaks and implement appropri

West Nile virus infection among turkey breeder farm workers--Wisconsin, 2002.

In 2002, Wisconsin public health officials were notified of two cases of febrile illness in workers at a commercial turkey breeder farm (farm A) in county A. The Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH) initiated an investigation that found a high prevalence of West Nile virus (WNV) antibody among farm A workers and turkeys. An associated high incidence of febrile illness among farm A workers also was observed. This report summarizes the results of this investigation, which indicate possible nonmosquito transmission among birds and subsequent infection of humans at farm A. Because the mode o
