The relevance of perceived work environment and work activities for personality trajectories in midlife.

OBJECTIVES: Work is an important developmental context in adulthood, yet little is known about how it contributes to personality trajectories in midlife. The present study examines how subjectively perceived work environment (autonomy, innovation, social integration, stress) and objectively measured work activities (activities related to information and people, physical/manual activities) are related to levels of Big Five personality traits at age 44 and to change over 20 years. METHODS: We analyzed four-wave longitudinal data from N = 374 participants (born 1950-1952; Mage T1 = 44 years, SD

Return to work outcomes after work-related hand trauma: the role of causal attributions.

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between workers' judgments of responsibility for their accidents (causal attributions) and work-site avoidance after work-related injuries. METHODS: Ninety-two hand-injured workers referred for psychologic treatment of posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms were assessed for their beliefs about the cause(s) of their accidents. Causal attributions were obtained before and after psychologic intervention. RESULTS: Workers who blamed coworkers or equipment for their injuries were more likely to resist returning to former work activities than wo

Work-rest periods: their effects on normal physiologic response to isometric and dynamic work.

Heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) responses to repeated dynamic and combined dynamic and isometric work bouts of 30 sec, 2 min, and 6 min with equal rest periods at 40% and 80% of Vo2max was studied in five healthy men and five healthy women. Total work duration for each experimental condition was 24 min. The treadmill was used for dynamic work. Subjects pushed a bar horizontally while on the treadmill at 20% of their maximal voluntary strength for isometric work. Results showed that work performed at 40% of Vo2max in 30 sec bouts compared to 6 min bouts reduced HR, BP and the double pro

The Impact of Shift-Work and Night Shift-Work on Thyroid: A Systematic Review.

Thyroid hormones are regulated by the pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), whose secretion presents a circadian rhythmicity. Indeed, it is conceivable that shift- and night shift-work, affecting sleep-wake rhythms, may impact thyroid functionality. Therefore, the aim of the present review was to provide an overview on the association between shift- and night shift-work and thyroid hormonal changes and disease development. A systematic review of studies available in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science databases was performed. A positive association between night shift-work and increa

A green social work perspective on social work during the time of COVID-19.

COVID-19 has challenged social workers to engage with health pandemics and provide essential services in conditions of uncertainty and high risk. They have safeguarded children, older adults and diverse adults in 'at risk' groups under tough conditions mediated by digital technologies, adhered to government injunctions, maintained social and physical distancing under lockdown and worked from home remotely. Social workers and social care workers have risen to the challenges, providing services with inadequate personal protective equipment and limited supervision and support. This article highli

When work is your passenger: Understanding the relationship between work and commuting safety behaviors.

For those who commute to and from work on a daily basis, this is an activity that requires attention to both what one is doing and the environment, in order for the commute to be done safely. Although research has shown that work can spill over into home and other nonwork domains, little attention has been paid to the impact that work may have on the transition time between one's work and nonwork domains. The present study sought to examine the relationship between end-of-day job strain and commuting stress with the safety of one's commute through the experience of work-related rumination. Dat

Daily spillover from family to work: A test of the work-home resources model.

The present study examines a mediated moderation model of the day-level effects of family hassles and family-work spillover (affect and cognition) on the relationship between job resources and employees' flourishing at work. Based on the work-home resources model, the authors hypothesized that demands from one domain (family) induce repetitive thoughts or negative feelings about those problems, so that individuals are not able to function optimally and to make full use of contextual resources in the other domain (work). Multilevel analyses of 108 Chinese working parents' 366 daily surveys reve

Am I ready to return to work? Assisting cancer survivors to determine work readiness.

PURPOSE: A critical initial step in work re-entry involves the determination of work readiness. Cancer survivors have requested increased health care provider involvement in their work readiness decisions. However, there has been no exploration of current practices in determining work readiness, and thus no specific recommendations regarding how to assist survivors in answering the question: Am I ready to return to work? METHODS: To explore return to work following cancer and the workplace supports survivors require, we completed an exploratory qualitative study. We conducted semi-structured

Work evaluations: critique of the state of the art of functional assessment of work.

The area of work evaluation is fertile ground for future research and development by occupational therapists. Current evaluations of work range from standardized work evaluations associated with vocational rehabilitation to highly technical physical capacity and work capacity instrumentation and equipment often associated with sports medicine. In addition, methods used to identify pain and abnormal illness behavior add the psychosocial component of work evaluation. The limitations of most of the traditional approaches to work evaluations are their lack of focus on the actual work environments

Shift Work Including Night Work and Long Working Hours in Industrial Plants Increases the Risk of Atherosclerosis.

There is an abundance of literature reporting an association between shift work and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Few studies have examined early manifestation of CVD using advanced modern methodology. We established a group of 65 shift workers and 29 day workers (controls) in two industrial plants. For the shift workers, the shift schedule includes rotating shifts with day, evening and nightshifts, some day and nightshifts lasting for 12 h. The current paper describes cross-sectional data in a study running for three years. We collected background data by questionnaire and measured blood pres
