Does work-family conflict predict allostatic load? A 4-year longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: A growing number of studies have reported that occupational psychosocial factors increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Allostatic load (AL) is a main biological mechanism that explains the pathway from stress to disease. This study examined whether work-to-family conflict (WFC) and family-to-work conflict (FWC) at baseline would be associated with changes in the AL index (ALI) across four years. METHODS: We used the Midlife in Japan survey, Wave I, and the biomarker projects, Waves I and II. This study included 152 participants with paid jobs and variables of interest at bas

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, acute kidney injury, fluid balance, and continuous renal replacement therapy: Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) and Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) joint consensus conference.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is increasingly being utilized for life-threatening cardiac and/or respiratory failure refractory to conventional treatment. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and fluid balance disorders commonly occur both before and during ECMO, with approximately half of cases receiving treatment with continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Acute kidney injury, fluid balance disorders, and CRRT influence both short- and long-term outcomes in this population. The 36th Acute Disease Quality Initiative (ADQI) meeting was held in June 2025 to develop multidisciplinary int

Generation Y and surgical residency - Passing the baton or the end of the world as we know it? Results from a survey among medical students in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: The current student generation have their own expectations toward professional life and pay particular attention to their work-life balance. Less interest in work-intensive specialties leads to a shortage of skilled candidates especially in surgery. In order to motivate students into a surgical residency, new priorities become important. A deeper understanding of the underlying arguments and students' expectations towards a surgical training are necessary to counteract a future shortage of specialized surgeons. METHODS: We conducted an internet-based survey among medical student

Exploring the connection between maternal mental health and partnership, parental role, and satisfaction with various aspects of life using pairfam data: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Decreased maternal mental health leads to difficulties for the mother herself and for her family life. In Germany, inpatient mother-/father-child preventive and rehabilitation clinics are addressing these parental health problems. Further analysis, however, is needed in order to better understand the origins of impaired parental health and to improve the interventions. The present study focuses on maternal mental health and its association with strains related to mothers' parental role, their partnership, and satisfaction with various aspects of life. Work-family-self-care and day drinking among women during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The term "day drinking" is used colloquially to refer to drinking alcohol during daytime hours and has become part of the vernacular surrounding alcohol use. Anecdotal evidence is suggestive of increased day drinking among women during the COVID-19 pandemic, but empirical studies are few. This study assessed changes in the time of day women consumed alcoholic beverages during the pandemic and investigated whether their difficulty balancing work, family, and self-care was associated with the initiation of daytime drinking. METHODS: In June of 2020, 546 women age 25 and older comple
