A role for norepinephrine in stress-induced cognitive deficits: alpha-1-adrenoceptor mediation in the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Stress exacerbates many neuropsychiatric disorders associated with prefrontal cortical (PFC) dysfunction. Stress also impairs the working memory functions of the PFC. Although stress research has focused on dopaminergic mechanisms, stress also increases norepinephrine (NE) release in PFC, and intra-PFC infusions of NE alpha-1-adrenoceptor agonists impair working memory. The current study examined whether NE alpha-1-adrenoceptor actions in PFC contribute to stress-induced deficits in working memory performance. METHODS: Rats were treated with a pharmacological stressor, FG7142 (30

Sleep quality and associated factors in teachers.

Sleep is an essential part of life, accounting for about one third of an individual's life expectancy and plays an important role in quality of life and professional performance. This study focuses specifically on primary school teachers, a group that often faces high levels of stress. Restorative sleep is vital for dealing with this stress, and when its quality is unsatisfactory, it can contribute to the development of burnout. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of poor sleep quality among state schoolteachers in Minas Gerais and to identify the factors associated with this con

Effects of head alignment devices on working memory and postural support during computer work.

The most common risk factor of computer workers is poor head and neck posture. Therefore, upright seated posture has been recommended repeatedly. However, maintaining an upright seated posture is challenging during computer work and induces various complaints, such as fatigue and discomfort, which can interfere working performance. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain an upright posture without complaints or intentional efforts during long-term computer work. Alignment devices are an appropriate maneuver to support postural control for maintaining head-neck orientation and reduce head weight

Burnout and its causes in Finnish dentists.

In the spring of 1986 burnout and its relation to social and physical environments and the nature of work were studied using a questionnaire sent to a sample of 232 dentists aged under 62 living in the province of Uusimaa, Finland. Most male and female dentists (71 and 67%, respectively) were working in group practices and most (88%) employed an assistant. Professional problems were generally (71%) solved by consulting colleagues. Half of those responding were very satisfied with their relationship to other dental staff. All but 9% of dentists experienced problems in their physical working env

Situation Awareness in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Their Relatives: an Endophenotype Study.

INTRODUCTION: It has been theorized that endophenotype models will help to understand the etiology of heterogeneous brain disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In this study, it was aimed to determine whether "situational awareness" impairments which can be defined as partially naturalistic working memory deficits, are an endofenotype for OCD. METHODS: In this study, situational awareness (SA) task performances of 67 OCD patients, 50 their unaffected first-degree relatives, and 41 healthy controls who matched with regard to sex, age and years of education were measured to inv

The prevalence of lameness and associated risk factors in cart mules in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has 7.1 million donkeys and mules, the majority of which are used as pack animals. Factors such as poor harness quality, long-distance traveling, and heavy cartloads have been linked to reduced work efficiency. Addressing the health and welfare of working equids is imperative not only for the animals but also for the households dependent upon them for livelihood. In developing countries, 75 % of working equids have gait or limb abnormalities, but the relationship between workload and prevalence of lameness is unknown. We examined 450 cart mules in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Lameness and wor

Impaired Consonant Trigrams Test (CTT) performance relates to everyday working memory difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) often struggle with complex tasks, such as those requiring divided attention (simultaneously completing two independent tasks) that also place high demands on working memory. Prior research shows that divided attention is impaired in adults and children with ASD and is related to ASD and comorbid attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, but the impact on everyday functioning is unclear. Because ADHD symptoms are associated with poor divided attention and working memory performance in children with ASD, we also examined ADHD symp

Trafficked female sex workers awaiting deportation: comparison with brothel workers.

In 2002, we researched the psychosocial characteristics of 55 women working in the commercial brothel-based sex industry in three Israeli cities. This previous social epidemiological study focused exclusively on women working in brothels and the brothel owners consented to their interviews, suggesting that this might be a sample of the most organized brothels with the best social conditions. We therefore decided to study a second sample obtained by different referral methods. The sample consisted of 49 women in a detention center who are awaiting judicial hearings for deportation.
