Physical workload and task efficiency across four mannequin towing techniques in water rescue.

Direct in-water rescue is a safety-critical task in which towing technique and rescue-support equipment may influence both rescuer workload and task output. This study compared physical workload, towing performance and physiological economy across four mannequin towing techniques: Extended Arm Tow, Double Armpit Tow, "Sailor" Technique Tow and Rescue Tube Tow. Eighteen male water lifeguards (age 18.8 ± 1.3 years; V˙O2max 56.1 ± 5.0 mL·kg-1·min-1) completed randomized 50-m towing trials after an incremental swimming test to determine maximal oxygen uptake. Towing velocity, gas-exchange variable

Editor's Choice - Trend-break in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair With Decreasing Surgical Workload.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology and management of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) has changed drastically in the past decades, with implementation of nationwide screening programs, introduction of endovascular repair (EVAR), and reduced prevalence of the disease. This report aims to assess recent trends in AAA repair epidemiology in Sweden in this context. METHODS: Primary AAA repairs registered in the nationwide Swedish Vascular Registry (Swedvasc) 1994-2014 were analyzed regarding patient characteristics, repair incidence, technique, and outcome. Four time periods were compared: 1994-1999, 2

Blood glucose control using an artificial pancreas reduces the workload of ICU nurses.

Blood glucose management is one of the important therapies in the intensive care unit (ICU). However, blood glucose management using the sliding-scale method increases the workload of ICU nurses. An artificial pancreas, STG-22, has been developed to continuously monitor blood glucose levels and to maintain them at appropriate levels. In this study, we examined the hypothesis that compared to conventional methods, blood glucose management using the STG-22 reduces the workload of ICU nurses and has a positive impact on awareness regarding the management of blood glucose. This study included 45 p

Nurse-perceived workload, staffing, and patient turnover: An analysis of longitudinal routine data.

BACKGROUND: Nursing workload is a critical factor in ensuring safe, high-quality patient care and maintaining nurse well-being. While high workload has been linked to adverse outcomes for both patients and staff, its assessment remains challenging. Common approaches rely on activity- or dependency-based measures or professional judgement, yet these often overlook important subjective and contextual factors. Nurse-perceived workload, particularly at the shift level, offers valuable insights but has received limited attention in research and is rarely used to guide staffing decisions. OBJECTIVE

Health-Literate Healthcare Organization Attributes and Perceived Workload Among Nurses and Nursing Coordinators.

BACKGROUND: Health-literate healthcare organizations (HLHOs) have been associated with improved clinical outcomes and quality of care for both patients and healthcare services, through the implementation of the "Ten Attributes of HLHOs" which support individuals in navigating, understanding, and using health information and services. Nurses, in both clinical and managerial roles, are crucial in supporting HLHO initiatives. However, a high level of perceived workload may influence their engagement with health literacy-related initiatives. PURPOSE: To assess nurses' and nursing coordinators' pe

Regulating Trainee Workload in Laparoscopic Simulation: Evidence from NASA-TLX and Pupillometry Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether a workload-adapted training protocol was associated with differences in trainee workload during laparoscopic simulation, using both self-reported and physiological measures. We hypothesized that adapting task difficulty to trainee progression would be associated with lower workload variability than a fixed-difficulty protocol. DESIGN: A randomized, controlled experimental pilot study. Participants were randomized into an Experimental group (workload-adapted protocol: task difficulty increased from low to high) or a Control group (fixed-medium difficulty). Workloa

Healthcare workload associated with transition onto kidney replacement therapy: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Transition onto kidney replacement therapy (KRT) is a complex, intensive phase for patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), characterised by high healthcare utilisation. Frequent outpatient visits, surgical and radiological procedures, hospitalisations and haemodialysis (HD) sessions impose a significant time burden on patients. The concept of time toxicity is widely described in oncology, and captures the disruption to patients' lives due to treatment-related demands. We aimed to quantify time- based healthcare workload during the transition onto KRT and

Improving Reporting of Exercise Capacity Across Age Ranges Using Novel Workload Reference Equations.

Exercise capacity (EC) is an important predictor of survival in the general population and in subjects with cardiopulmonary disease. Despite its relevance, considering the percent-predicted workload (%pWL) given by current equations may overestimate EC in older adults. Therefore, to improve the reporting of EC in clinical practice, our main objective was to develop workload reference equations (pWL) that better reflect the relation between workload and age. Using the Fitness Registry and the Importance of Exercise National Database (FRIEND), we analyzed a reference group of 6,966 apparently he

EMCI: A Novel EEG-Based Mental Workload Assessment Index of Mild Cognitive Impairment.

As aging deepens, early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is increasingly important to prevent Alzheimer Dementia (AD) and improve the quality of life of older adults. In recent years, a large number of studies focus on the abnormal brain cognitive function of MCI, while ignoring the quantitative evaluation of MCI's mental workload. In this study, we propose a workload index for MCI screening, named EMCI, which is a linear discriminant cumulative estimate of subjects' electroencephalography (EEG) power spectra in α and β rhythms. Then, we design a matched prototype system to verify

Cardiac workload in patients with sleep-disordered breathing early after acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) may promote an increase in cardiac workload early after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We tested the hypothesis that in the early phase after AMI, SDB is associated with increased 24-h arterial BP, heart rate (HR), and, thus, cardiac workload. METHODS: In this prospective study, 55 consecutive patients with AMI and subsequent percutaneous coronary intervention (78% men; mean age, 54 ± 10 y; mean BMI, 28.3 ± 3.6 kg/m²; mean left ventricular ejection fraction [LVEF], 47% ± 8%) underwent polysomnography and 24-h ambulatory BP and heart rate monito

Value of an exercise workload ≥10 metabolic equivalents for predicting inducible myocardial ischemia.

BACKGROUND: We sought to identify extensive ischemia on exercise echocardiography (ExE) relative to workload in patients without known coronary artery disease and to investigate whether ExE is useful in predicting outcomes in those with high exercise capacity (≥10 metabolic equivalents [METs]) plus a maximal test (≥85% of their maximal age-predicted heart rate [MAPHR]). METHODS AND RESULTS: The analysis was performed on 4269 patients who underwent ExE, of whom 3995 achieved ≥85% of their MAPHR. These patients were divided according to the reached workload (<7, 7-9, or ≥10 METs) and compared f

Computational fluid dynamic simulations for determination of ventricular workload in aortic arch obstructions.

OBJECTIVE: The cardiac workload associated with various types of aortic obstruction was determined using computational fluid dynamic simulations. METHODS: Computed tomography image data were collected from 4 patients with 4 distinct types of aortic arch obstructions and 4 controls. The categorization of arch hypoplasia corresponded to the "A, B, C" nomenclature of arch interruption; a type "D" was added to represent diffuse arch hypoplasia. Measurements of the vessel diameter were compared against the normal measurements to determine the degree of narrowing. Three-dimensional models were crea

[Patient classification systems. Nursing workload from the perspective of applied research (part I)].

This article describes in two parts the basic principles of categorising nursing data into Patient Classification Systems (PCS) and related findings of nursing research. PCS are used to group patients into classes by using some specified criteria or indicators, e.g. needs of a patient, functional status or different nursing activities. They are often applied to constitute staff requirements. Since the large number of available classification systems differs in terms of development procedures and use of resulting data, it was rarely possible to compare different PCS with each other until now. Effect of block weight on work demands and physical workload during masonry work.

The effect of block weight on work demands and physical workload was determined for masons who laid sandstone building blocks over the course of a full work day. Three groups of five sandstone block masons participated. Each group worked with a different block weight: 11 kg, 14 kg or 16 kg. Productivity and durations of tasks and activities were assessed through real time observations at the work site. Energetic workload was also assessed through monitoring the heart rate and oxygen consumption at the work site. Spinal load of the low back was estimated by calculating the cumulated elastic ene

Increased workload enhances force output during pedaling exercise in persons with poststroke hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A principle of poststroke rehabilitation is that effort should be avoided since it leads to increased spasticity and produces widespread associated abnormal reactions. Although weakness also contributes to movement dysfunction after a stroke, it has been feared that heightened activity levels during strength training will further exacerbate the abnormal tone imbalance present in spastic hemiplegia. The purpose of this study was to test this hypothesis by quantifying the effects of increased workload on motor performance during different speeds of pedaling exercise in pe
