Risk factors for wound infection after oral cancer surgery.

Wound infection is a common complication after oral cancer surgery and may result in significant functional morbidity, poor cosmetic results and prolonged hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to identify the most important factors contributing to operative wound infections in patients with oral and oropharyngeal cancer. A retrospective review of complications in 111 patients after oral and oropharynx cancer surgery with an immediate reconstruction is presented. Potential risk factors for infection were categorized based on the patient, the disease, and the treatment. Flap-related com

Association of sternal wound infection with parasternal muscle sutures.

BACKGROUND: Sternal wound infection complicating open-heart surgery is a potentially devastating complication that has been associated with a number of risk factors. We recently consulted on three consecutive patients with this complication who had heavy nonabsorbable parasternal sutures placed in muscle tissue adjacent to the sternum. The aim of this report is to document our findings and caution that this technique to control bleeding from the parasternal intercostal muscles my increase risk of infection. METHODS: The pathology, surgical findings, and microbiology of these three cases are a

Wound infection after cesarean: effect of subcutaneous tissue thickness.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effect of the thickness of subcutaneous tissue at the surgery site on abdominal wound infection after cesarean delivery. METHODS: We measured the maximum vertical depths of subcutaneous incisions of women who had cesarean deliveries. The surgical technique for closure was standardized and drains were not used. Abdominal wound infection was defined by standard criteria and limited to the first 6 postoperative weeks. Additional demographic, intrapartum, and perioperative data previously associated with wound infection also were collected. Data were analyzed by Student

Visceral injuries, wound infection and sepsis following electrical injuries.

Visceral injuries, wound infection and sepsis were investigated in 226 inpatients who sustained electrical burns over a period of 15 years. Four patients who sustained thoracic and abdominal organ injuries were noted in this series. The patients had injuries of the small intestine, stomach, colon and the lung. All the patients received operative treatment. Two of them died of sepsis. Injuries to the internal organs should always be considered following high-voltage injuries, and they should be managed as early as possible. The data concerning wound infection and sepsis following electrical inj

Reduction of wound infection in high-risk surgical patients.

During a 9-year period, 183 consecutive patients underwent total colectomy and the endorectal ileal pull-through procedure (ERIPT) for ulcerative colitis (UC) (n = 156), familial polyposis (n = 25), or Hirschsprung's disease (n = 2). The average age was 29.4 years (range 7.1-59.1 years). All patients with UC were steroid-dependent at the time of operation. Two groups were retrospectively reviewed based on the management of their midline abdominal wounds. Ninety consecutive patients underwent the ERIPT procedure between 1983 and 1987 with stapled skin closure and perioperative intravenous antib

[Characteristics of wound infection in long-term crush syndrome].

Clinicobacteriological examination was carried out in 31 patients with the crush syndrome (CS) and extensive damage to the soft tissues in combination with bone fractures complicated by wound infection. Inadequate surgical treatment in the early periods after the trauma (complete closure of the wound, making small incisions of the involved skin and subcutaneous fat) is particularly hazardous in such cases because it leads to the development of severe wound infection. This disease is marked by a complex polymicrobial structure of the causative agents, massive dissemination of aerobic and opport

Study of cardiothoracic wound infection at St. Thomas' Hospital.

Wound infection occurred after 14.3 per cent of 433 open heart operations. In 309, saphenous veins were harvested for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and 8.7 per cent of sternal wounds and 12.9 per cent of leg wounds were infected. Only 1.6 per cent of the remaining 124 patients who had open heart operations without leg surgery suffered sternal wound infections. In the CABG group sternal infection was theatre-related and significantly associated with length of pre-operative stay, diabetes and re-operation. Similar organisms were isolated from both leg and sternal wounds which suggest th

The Role of Perfumes in Surgical Wound Infections and Wound Healing: A Case-Control Study.

A common complication of post-surgical procedures is surgical site infections (SSIs), and wound healing can be gravely affected by these SSIs. Perfumes are known for their use in personal hygiene; however, their role in surgical wound healing and SSIs has not been thoroughly studied. The present study explores the post-operative usage of perfumes in the context of SSIs and wound healing. This was a case-control study conducted in Hail City's Tertiary Care Hospital in Saudi Arabia for 9 months (April-December). The participants were adults undergoing clean elective plastic surgeries. Sixty-thre

Experience with negative-pressure wound therapy with instillation in complex infected orthopaedic wounds.

Chronic exudative wounds are frequently seen in hospitalised patients, consuming hospital resources and leading to increased morbidity. Negative-pressure therapy (NPWT) with topical instillation "NPWTi" may be used to improve the wound healing process, with the unique features (removal of wound exudate, edema reduction, promotion of tissue perfusion and granulation tissue formation, as well as drawing the edges of the wound to facilitate, in addition to the cyclic cleansing mechanism). This report is a descriptive study of our experience with NPWTi on complex infected orthopaedic wounds as a p

Wound healing, wound-free period and amputation-free survival in patients with Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) stage 3 and 4 disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent publications in low-risk Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) stage 1 to 2 chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) suggest wound care-first strategies are safe. Although revascularization is widely accepted as beneficial in high-risk WIfI stage 3 to 4 patients, its impact on wound-centered outcomes such as wound healing time (WHT) and wound-free period (WFP) has not been well-characterized. METHODS: A two-center, retrospective analysis was performed. Baseline data included demographics, comorbidities, perfusion indices, WIfI, and treatment modality (endovascular, ope

Behind the Scalp: Predictors of Wound Dehiscence and Wound Infection After Craniotomy-An Analysis of 24,235 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Craniotomy is a commonly performed neurosurgical procedure for tumor removal, vascular repair, and decompression. While generally safe, postoperative wound complications remain a major concern due to their proximity to the central nervous system. Adjuvant therapies, particularly radiation, can impair scalp healing by causing fibrosis, poor microcirculation, and reduced epithelial repair, thereby predisposing patients to wound dehiscence and surgical site infection (SSI). These complications increase morbidity, length of stay, and readmissions, with SSI following glioblastoma surg

Failure of secondary wound closure after sternal wound infection following failed initial operative treatment: causes and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Patients transferred to Plastic Surgery Departments for sternum osteomyelitis have a high morbidity of about 3%. Despite several known options for sternal wound coverage and salvage operations, wound dehiscence or wound necrosis can occur, increasing patient morbidity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred thirty-five patients admitted between January 2007 and December 2010 were evaluated in a retrospective study for wound dehiscence after salvage wound coverage at our institution. Various flaps were applied, such as pectoralis major myocutaneous pedicled flaps, pectoralis major muscl

Extradural catheter-related infections in patients with infected cutaneous wounds.

We report three previously healthy individuals, aged 19-40 yr, with co-existing infected lower limb cutaneous wounds, who developed, in all probability, spinal space infections complicating continuous extradural analgesia. As the number of patients with extradural catheters and large cutaneous wounds represents a small fraction of the total number of patients with extradural catheters, three cases of presumed spinal space infection over a 4-yr period suggests that extradural analgesia with a catheter technique in this clinical situation is unsafe.

Wound Healing Activity of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles; Comparative In Vivo Study on Staphylococcus aureus-Infected and Non-Infected Wounds.

Background/Objectives: Wound infections represent a major category of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) that interrupt the wound healing process, resulting in delayed wound healing and increasing the incidence of mortality, morbidity and healthcare costs. With the emergence of antibiotic resistance, there is an urgent need to find alternative therapeutic strategies capable of overcoming antibiotic resistance while simultaneously promoting wound healing. Previously, we synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles stabilized with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (IONPs-CTAB), reported their antimicr
